A good 'Satsuma' Vase, c.1870, of square section and after a Chinese Wanli bronze, the facets well decorated with a winged dragon amongst clouds and waves, the reverse with addorsed ho-o, between chrysanthemums growing from a banded fence or peony and bamboo, between false gadroon borders, traces of mark, 25cm The chrysanthemums growing from a banded fence, most commonly seen on Kakiemon porcelain and copied at the early English factories, feature in a poem by the Chinese Six Dynasties poet Tao Qian (365-427). The poem reads: 'I pluck chrysanthemums by the Eastern fence, And see the distant Southern Mountains'. CONDITION REPORT: A small part of gilt character mark remaining, along with blue shimazu mon. otherwise no obvious faults.

The rim with some small nicks, gilding rubbed.

Other vase has no obvious faults.
