The relaxed manner in which it is painted belies the skill with which the artist can convey the essence of the landscape. The figures of the standing man and the woman who bends towards the ground add a pleasing human quality to the scene. In many later landscapes Hone deliberately subdued his colour range, with a sort of “less is more” philosophy, and here the palette of olives, silvers and ochres is original. Daniel O`Neill (1920-1974) TWO WOMEN BY THE SEA oil on canvas faintly signed upper left; inscribed with title, artist`s name and numbered [no. 33] on original label on reverse 20 by 24in., 50 by 60cm. L Two Women by the Sea is a beautifully balanced double portrait that brings together O`Neill`s two great passions, landscape and women. The mood is typically quiet with a subtle sense of disconnect lingering between the subjects, neither of whom engage the viewer but rather stare off in opposite directions. Their humour is somewhat mirrored in the environment around them. The waters barely break a wave on the shore but there is a hint of turbulence lurking in the clouds which appear to be growing darker from the left of the composition. The palette is a harmony of blues and greys warmed by flesh and earthy tones favoured by the artist. This finish is textured with impasto adding another dimension to the work. Although exhibition records for Two Women by the Sea have not been traced, its size and presentation - in a hand-carved Waddington frame - would suggest it must have been included in a significant exhibition at some stage, possibly with the Waddington Gallery in London or Montreal. The title is inscribed on a label on reverse and it is numbered thirty-three.

He depicts O`Connor as a flamboyant figure, hair shoulder-length, but with a look that is faintly uncertain despite his readiness to enter controversies, mainly those about the arts.Ulick O`Connor (b.1928) is an Irish writer, historian and critic born in Dublin and best known for his biographies of Oliver St. John Gogarty, Brendan Behan, his studies of the early 20th century Irish troubles and the Irish Literary Revival. His own autobiography, The Ulick O`Connor Diaries 1970-1981: A Cavalier Irishman (2001), is noted for documenting the progress of the Peace Process and of the Northern Ireland Assembly as well as recording his encounters with distinguished Irish and international personalities, ranging from the political, such as Jack Lynch and Paddy Devlin, to the artistic, Christy Brown and actor Peter Sellers. He is a member of Aosdána.

A 1950’s child’s tinplate airship ‘chair-o-plane’ style toy. Probably of European manufacture, simplistically designed with two ‘side plate’ size (20cm) painted discs fitted to a central rectangular support. This is fitted with a screw mechanism to turn the top disc. To this top, 3 wires are connected on which are suspended 3x 12cm tinplate airships, each fitted with a propeller. The whole is painted in green, maroon and yellow, with green, yellow and blue airships. VGC Minor wear only.

A 1930’s musical tinplate chair-O-plane style toy. An interesting small tinplate German style toy based on a cylindrical base containing chimes driven by a rotating handle to one end. The base 10cm long by 6cm diameter is finished in yellow with a crackled orange design to the main surfaces, fitted with feet to aid use. This is connected to a central support in yellow with the same crackle design to the top, off which is hung a parasol and 3 Zeppelin style airships. Seated to a plinth on the central support are 3 female figures. Along with 3 musical chimes all rotate when the handle is turned. GC. See Plate 5

An interesting recently produced Czech ‘O’ gauge locomotive by ETS. A 12 volt electric American S160 2-8-0 tender locomotive, as supplied to the United Nations for use on European Railways. In black livery, RN 459 005 and with UNRRA to 8-wheel bogie tender sides. Boxed, lid damaged. Contents VGC, red paint added to buffer beam.

A Bing O gauge clockwork locomotive 2-4-0 version of LNWR loco King Edward VII in lined black, RN and year of manufacture 1902, with tender. Loco name and number are in red-lined black lettering on gold, LNWR being in gold lettering with red lining on tender. The numbers 1 over 48 appear in small faded red lettering on gold over the front buffer beam. Lithographed inner cab detailing. The 4-wheel tender appears to be made as such, although the frame has provision for 6 with only 4 axle apertures. GC for age, significant chipping, needs cleaning. See Plate 1

A rare O gauge white metal LMS Co-Co diesel locomotive RN 10000, the first of the famous LMS / BR Twins and the first UK main line diesel-electric loco, but also one of the last locomotives commissioned by the LMS in 1947 before Nationalisation - its twin, RN 10001, was commissioned soon after by British Railways. 3-rail operation, probably kit built, in black with silver LMS lettering, spring buffers.
