Stagecoaches autograph letter signed by William Newman probably early 19th c describing the difficulties of travelling by stagecoach at the time: ‘...we left Bull and Mouth Inn London at 5 on Friday Evening (for Oxford) & by the time we left Oxford we mustered on the coach 18 living souls exclusive of 2 swans. There were five insiders & the luggage was 6 or 7 feet high on the roof with 2 men on the top of that (part of the 18 in number). The Journey therefore was somewhat uncomfortable for we rode in feat lest the coach should overturn nearly all the way for when the coachman drove fast^ which he frequently did^ the coach rolled about like a drunken man to the terror of us all ....& then started from Oxford fro Cheltenham at 2 o’c[lock] getting to the latter place at 8 o’c[lock] on Saturday Evening. We looked out for a tavern...and got to bed about 11 very tired...’ The Bull and Mouth Inn was by far the most famous of all the coaching inns built in medieval times^ it was eventually demolished in the 19th c.
