Haverhill, Mass. The Largest Boot and Shoe Town of the World . This attractive bird`s-eye view depicts the city of Haverhill, situated on the banks of the Merrimac River. It shows the city at a time of economic boom, driven primarily by its shoe industry. Surrounding the image are 64 vignettes of public institutions, important factories and businesses, and a few prominent residences. A key at bottom identifies 26 public buildings which are numbered in the image. Folds into black pebbled cloth boards with gilt title ""Compliments of Board of Trade Haverhill, Mass."" Urban renewal during the 1950s-60s razed many of the downtown buildings along the Main, Merrimack and River streets, making this map a wonderful visual record of Haverhill prior to its post-Depression decline. The view was created by Oakley Hoopes Bailey who produced about 375 views during his career, spanning 56 years. After settling in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1875, Bailey focused his work on towns in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. Bailey`s views are celebrated for their careful drawings and detailed indices offering a wealth of information on architectural and business information. Light toning along a few folds primarily where the view touches the boards along with numerous short splits at fold junctions. Three fold separations at left in the business listings just touch the neatline, and a 3"" edge tear at bottom is confined to the index. Covers are very good. The map would benefit from professional mounting. 35"" W x 24.2"" H . Bailey, O. H. & Co., 1893
Insulae Americanae in Oceano Septentrionali ac Regiones Adiacentes, a C. de May Usque ad Lineam Aequinoctialem . This handsome map focuses on the West Indies and covers the region from the Chesapeake through the Gulf of Mexico, with Central America and the northern part of South America. Two lovely cartouches with cherubs and mermaids decorate opposite corners. Eight ships sail the seas and three native canoes are depicted off the coast of North America. A number of interesting cartographic myths appear on the map. These include two large nonexistent lakes in the region of western Georgia and a non-existent mountain range extending from the Piedmonts bearing across the North American continent. In South America, the archetypal cartographic myth, Manoa o` El Dorado (the golden city), is located on the shores of the Lacus Parime vel Roponowini in Guyana. This is the second state with the addition of the privilege in the cartouche. A fine impression with splendid original color. There is a small abrasion along the centerfold in Colombia, a faint damp stain below the title cartouche, and an archivally repaired centerfold separation that enters 2"" into map at bottom. 22.3"" W x 18.3"" H . Visscher, Nicolas . 1682

Piano Scenografico della Citta dei Re, o Sia di Lima Capitale del Regno del PeruÂ…, by Veremondo Rossi, circa 1763 (10.7 x 10.2""). This is a very detailed view of the fortified city of Lima. The river protects one side and extensive ramparts and suburbs surround the other sides. Across the top the legend lists and keys 70 buildings and important features within the city and vicinity. Drawn by Veremondo Rossi with no attribution given for the engraver. A beautifully engraved and scarce Italian-produced map. Condition: Ample margins with light toning along the centerfold and sparse scattered foxing, mostly confined to the blank margins. An edge tear in top blank margin has been repaired on verso with archival tape. (B+)B. Plan de la Ville de Paita dans le Royaume de Santa Fe / Grond-Tekening van de Stad Paita, in `t Koningryk Santa-Fe, by J. Van Schley, circa 1755 (14 x 7.9""). This bird`s-eye plan of the town of Paita shows a basic block city plan with several roads leading out of the town. Paita was an important Spanish seaport city in northern Peru during the 16th century. In 1741, George Anson landed in Paita and sacked the city during his voyage around the world. The dotted line between ""A"" and ""B"" shows the movements of Anson`s crew through the town. This plan first appeared in Richard Walter`s A Voyage Around the World, and was later re-engraved by van Schley for a Dutch edition of Prevost`s Histoire Generale des Voyages. Condition: Issued folding on watermarked paper. (A) . See description . See description . . 1755-63
[Illuminated Leaf] . A wonderful vellum leaf from a Book of Hours written in Paris in the latter part of the 16th century. This is one of the last Books of Hours, as their value was declared null by Pius V in 1568. The scribe used dark brown ink and wrote in fine, Roman script, possibly trying to imitate printed type. The leaf is decorated with one large initial in red, blue and white and adorned with leaves and a flower, as well as numerous small initials and line fillers in red, blue, green and gold. The text is from Psalm 66, and beginning with the large initial ""D"" on the verso, the text translates as:May God have mercy on us, and bless us: May he cause the light of his countenance to shine upon us, and may he have mercy on us.That we may know thy way upon earth: thy salvation in all nations.Let people confess to thee, O God: let all people give praise to thee.Let the nations be glad and rejoice: for thou judgest the people with justice, and directest the nations upon earth. Clean and bright. 4.5"" W x 6.5"" H . Anon., 1570
