(R.C.A.F.), Eburne, B.C. and No. 3 S.F.T.S., Calgary, Alberta; gained his Pilot's Flying Badge 28.3.1941; arrived in England September 1941; posted to 56 O.T.U. the following month, and converted to Hurricanes; advanced Flight Sergeant 1.12.1941, and posted to 133 (Eagle) Squadron (Hurricanes), Eglinton, December 1941; the squadron converted to Spitfires and moved to Kirton-in-Lindsey, January 1942; on the 31st 'Convoy Patrol. No E/A sighted. My First Operational Flip' (Log Book refers); over the following two months the squadron was mainly tasked with east coast convoy patrols and sector recces; posted to 121 (Eagle) Squadron (Spitfires), North Weald,1.4.1942; carrying on in a similar capacity Austin grew in experience, 3.4.1942, 'Sweep. minor Channel sweep - my first sight of France' and 12.4.1942, 'Convoy Patrol. Bugger All!!! - First time as No. 1 - we improve' (ibid); however, as the Squadron Operations Record Book shows it was sadly too little too late, 17.4.1942:'At 11.40 hours the North Weald Wing took off for a Sweep over France. The coast was crossed at Hawkinge at 12.10 hours and landfall made at Le Touquet and out via Gravelines via Guines. The Squadron flew at 26,000 feet during these operations, the purpose of which was to create a diversion and keep a look out for Enemy Aircraft going to meet our Bombers, which were making a raid on a Parachute Factory at Calais. The Bombers were performing this task simultaneously with our arrival at Le Touquet. Hornchurch, Biggin Hill and Debden Wings were covering the Bombers. Although Enemy Aircraft were seen no engagements took place, and Pilots returned to base at 12.50 hours. At 15.10 hours the Wing was airborne again on a Fighter Sweep. Southend was reached at 15.34 hours, Dover 15.59, St. Inglevert 15.57, and Lumbres 16.04. The French coast was left at Boulogne. Our Squadron flew at approximately 27,000 feet and was top cover. F/Lt. Allen and P/O Fetrow fired at a F.W. 190 but observed no results. This occurred roughly 10 miles east of St. Omer in both cases. F/O Edner while 15 miles east of St. Omer fired a 3 second burst from 400 yards at a F.W. 190 at 9,000 feet, he saw bullets entering the fuselage, he fired again at 5,000 feet, a 3 second burst was seen to strike at 400 yards range. The Enemy Aircraft was not seen to be affected by these hits. F/O Edner says that in all cases he is sure his bullets pierced the Enemy Aircraft although it would be difficult, I should say, to be certain at a range of 400 yards.F/O Smith

Map of the Territory of New Mexico, made by order of Brig. Gen. S. W. KearneyÂ… [with] Report of Lieut. J. W. Abert, of his Examination of New Mexico, in the Years 1846-47 During the War with Mexico, Lieutenants Abert and Peck were enroute to the Pacific with Lieut. Emory as part of General Kearny`s Army of the West, but the two were left behind due to illness. They took the opportunity to continue their survey efforts earlier started on Fremont`s third expedition. The resulting map is a very detailed look at the Rio Grande Valley and some adjacent areas including the pueblos of Laguna and Acoma. This important map, illustrated in Wheat, is roughly centered on Santa Fe. It details the territory along the Rio Grande from above Taos south to well below Socorro and San Antonio to the ruins at Valverde. Excellent detail of the topography and watershed to either side of the river with the mountains shown via hachure. Filled with place names including numerous villages and small towns, and the Comanche Route from Arkansas. Blank areas to the west and north are labeled Navajo Indians and Utah Indians. This map was issued with Emory`s Notes of a Military Reconnaissance in 1848. 10,000 copies were produced for this House of Representatives edition. This lot includes the unbound Abert`s report. [Lot of 2] Mexico [and] Possessioni della Spagna nell` America Settentrionale o Carta Generale del Messico This lot includes two uncommon maps of Mexico and the American Southwest. In the Valle Salado (present-day Utah) is a lake with the notation ""Western Limits of this lake are unknown."" Many Indian tribes and villages are named, with roads, topography and watershed also shown. The second map is an Italian map from Nuovo Atlante di Geografia universale in 52 Carte.... engraved by F. Bordiga and published in Milan by Luigi Rossi and Vincenzo Batelli. The cartography is broader than the first, covering an area from the Southeast west to San Francisco. Very early place names are identified in the Southwest and Florida is divided into East and West. A. Mexico, by John Cary, dated 1816 (9.2 x 11.4""). Condition: Original color with wide margins on thick paper. There is one small spot in the image and some light dampstaining confined to the lower right blank margin. B. Parte della Nuova Spagna, o del Mexico doue Sono le Provincie di Guadalaira Xalisco Mecoacan e Mexico... This scarce and superbly decorative map of western and central Mexico covers from Xiamora to Acapulco and includes Mexico City and Guadalajara along with cities, towns, mines, missions and Indian villages. Notations in the mountains north of Mexico City describe the rich deposits of silver and other annotations describe the manners and customs of the Indians. The active volcano at Popocatepec (Popocatzin) is vividly erupting in the lower right corner. Coronelli, a Franciscan priest, was a highly respected cartographer & globe maker. Largely through his religious connections, Coronelli had access to geographical information from the expeditions exploring the southwestern regions of North America. This map is decorated with an elaborate title cartouche with mythological figures and an equally attractive cartouche for the scale of miles. Nice impression and color with light soiling along centerfold and archival repairs to several separations along the centerfold. 17.8"" W x 23.9"" H Coronelli, Vicenzo Maria 1691

Amerique Meridionale Delicately engraved map of South America with a charming cartouche and a simple compass rose. It presents very good information in the interior, focusing particularly on the systems of the La Plata and Amazon rivers. A remnant of the mythical Lac de Parime with the fabled Manoa o el Dorado (City of Gold) is still shown straddling the equator in Guyana. Another mythical lake, Lac de Eupana ou de los Xarayes, is depicted in Paraguay. Although his imprint does not appear on this map, this map was re-engraved from Sanson`s 1657l map by Antoine de Winter. A dark, crisp impression, issued folding. 7.8"" W x 11"" H Sanson, Nicolas 1700

Lot 441

Islandia This is one of the most spectacular of all decorative maps, filling the Icelandic seas with a Boschian array of sea monsters. A lettered key on the verso gives descriptions of the creatures. Some of the beasts can be linked to a real sea creature, particularly whales and walruses, while others are wholly fantastic, such as the aquatic hyena (D) and seagoing cow (K). A Latin note near the coast explains a group of foxes holding each others tails suspended down a cliff as follows: Sly little foxes reaching for bird`s nests to rob. The upper right corner accurately depicts polar bears gamboling and fighting on ice flows, while below them an expanse of driftwood makes its way to the northern coast. Driftwood was and still is an important natural resource in coastal Iceland after it floats down from Siberia. Ambergris is noted as well (O), with the description on the verso linking it to sperm whales. The interior of the island shows its mountainous topography, including Mt. Hekla in all its volcanic fury, spewing flames and rocks. Ortelius attributed the cartography to Andres Sorensen Vedel, a Danish historian, who acquired the information from a now lost map by Bishop Gudbrandur Thorlaksson. The map was published in the 1595 Latin edition with descriptive Latin text on the verso. A fine impression with full original color on watermarked paper, light soiling in the blank margins, and a centerfold separation confined to the bottom blank margin. There is as a tear in bottom blank margin that has been closed on recto with old paper. Remnants of hinge tape on verso along edges of sheet. 13.3"" W x 19.4"" H Ortelius, Abraham 1585

Lot 721

[Illuminated Leaf] A very pretty leaf from a Parisian Book of Hours, written on a fine sheet of buttery, white vellum in black ink. The leaf is decorated with three large initials and two small initials illuminated in red, blue, white and burnished gold leaf. Both sides feature decorative panels painted with gold leaves on hairline stems with colorful flowers and fruits. The text is from the Hours of the Holy Spirit and the Mass of the Virgin. The red rubrics indicate at which hours the prayers should be read. Beginning on verso at the large initial ""O"" the text translates into English as:All powerful and everlasting God, grant us the grace of the holy spirit which your disciples bestowed upon us on the holy day of Pentecost. At the sixth hour of the day (noon). Very light soiling with one tiny tear at right that has been professionally repaired. 6.5"" W x 4.9"" H Anon., 1460

Lot 722

[Illuminated Leaf] This creamy vellum leaf is from an Italian book of hours, written in black, red and blue ink. The text is from Psalm 70, verses 11 through 24. Beginning at the top of the recto the text translates as:Saying: God hath forsaken him: pursue and take him, for there is none to deliver him.O God, be not thou far from me: O my God, make haste to my help.Let them be confounded and come to nothing that detract my soul; let them be covered with confusion and shame that seek my hurt. But I will always hope; and will add to all thy praise. Very minor toning and soiling along edges of sheet. 7.8"" W x 5.5"" H Anon., 1480

Lot 94

[On 2 Sheets] A Map of Louisiana and Mexico / Carte de la Louisiane et du Mexique This highly detailed large-scale map of western North America extends north to Queen Charlotte Sound and James Bay in Canada, east just past the Mississippi River, and south to Guatemala. The map depicts the U.S. just after the settlement of its boundary with Mexico in 1819. The Adams-Onis Treaty, or Transcontinental Treaty, of 1819 was critical in defining the U.S.-Mexico boundary. In the provisions of the treaty, the U.S. ceded to Spain its claims to Texas, New Mexico and California in exchange for Spain`s claims to east Florida and the Oregon Country north of the 42nd parallel (the present-day northern border of California). This map shows the new boundary between the U.S. and Mexico, and leaves the boundary between the U.S. and Canada open to the west, reflecting the joint interests in the area between the Americans and British. There is incredible topographical detail of the Rocky Mountains, and the extensive network of rivers in the U.S. is also well defined. Towns and early roads are also identified. California and Nevada are left blank with the exception of the R. del Carmelo o S. Felipe connecting the Pacific Ocean to L. Teguayo. Both L. Teguayo and nearby L. Timpanogos are noted as ""doubtful."" U.S. state boundaries are identified east of the Mississippi River, including the Northwest Territory, encompassing Wisconsin and parts of Minnesota. To the west of the Mississippi River is the enormous Louisiana, which is divided into the state of Louisiana, Arkansas Territory, and Missouri Territory with an undefined western border. Present-day Texas is divided into several Mexican provinces with only a few towns noted (including S. Antonio) and one long trail crossing the state. The Red River is illustrated dipping too far south.A note at bottom explains the cartographical sources for the map. Upper Louisiana was based on the work of Pike and Lewis and Clark, while the state of Louisiana was based on the work of William Darby. Arkansas Territory and the Province of Texas were derived from John Melish`s map of the United States. Several other cartographers are also noted, including Alexander von Humboldt and Aaron Arrowsmith. This map was published for distribution in Paris by J. Goujon and in New York by Anthony Girard. On two sheets. If joined, the map would measure approximately 31"" x 43"". A bright, clean example with original color and just a few tiny spots of foxing. Trimmed to neatlines at sides. Please note that the image of the map as a whole is a composite image - the 2 sheets are not joined. 20.9"" W x 31"" H Tardieu, Pierre Antoine 1820
