Medieval Gold `Love conquers all: I am here in place of a lover` Posy Ring13th century AD. A D-section hoop with three raised quatrefoil motifs to the outer face, stepped shoulders and pie-dish bezel with inset cabochon sapphire; to the chamfered outer faces of the hoop, the legend in seriffed capitals `+AM*ORVI*NCIT*IOMI` (amor vincit omnia: `love conquers all`) and `+IE*SVII*CIEN*LIVD` (ie sui ici en lieu: `I am am here in place (of a lover)`. Disclaimed under the Treasure Act, reference 2013T317, with associated documentation. 1.28 grams, 23mm overall, 17.66mm internal diameter (approximate size British O, USA 7 1/4, Europe 15.48, Japan 15) (1"). Found Lincolnshire, UK. Very fine condition, with a beautiful inscription.

Property of a Suffolk lady; formerly in the Deago collection, by descent from the vendor`s mother. Fine condition. Repaired.
Medieval Bronze `Queen of Mercy` Vesica Seal Matrix14th century AD. A seal matrix with strap and loop to the reverse; intaglio design of a haloed facing Madonna and Child (Mary and Jesus) and robed supplicant figure praying below, beneath an arch; to the border the Lombardic script legend `+SALVE REGINA MISERICORDE` (Save [me] O Queen of Mercy); accompanied by an impression and collector`s relevant data cards. The same inscription and design are recorded for a number of seals of the Medieval period, cf. Birch, W. de Gray, Catalogue of Seals in the Department of Manuscripts in the British Museum, London, 1887, volume 1, number 1716 (counterseal) and Ellis, Roger H., Catalogue of Seals in the Public Record Office, London, 1978, Personal Seals, volume I, numbers P545 and P693 (of very similar form). 11 grams, 35mm (1 1/2"). An important London collection of ecclesiastical seals, acquired since the 1970s; found near Canterbury, Kent, UK. Very fine condition.

A broad flat-section hoop with bird motifs to the shoulders, discoid plaque with intaglio dove with olive branch in its beak, 6.29 grams, 20mm overall, 17.71mm internal diameter (approximate size British O 1/2, USA 7 1/4, Europe 15.61, Japan 15) (3/4"). UK art market, acquired prior to 1980. The motif of the dove with an olive branch in its beak is a reference to the biblical story of the Ark, in which after the flood Noah sends out a dove to see if the waters have subsided. The dove returns with a fresh olive leaf in her beak. Very fine condition.

Property of a Suffolk collector. The mark `.585` is a European stamp, equivalent to UK 14ct gold. Fine condition.

Ex Walter Steinberg collection; with envelope. Walter Steinberg has been a well-known figure at fairs, sales and events for many years. Born in 1922 in Philadelphia, Walter has had a life-long passion for collecting. A long-time resident in London, he has now retired to New York and decided that the time has come to pass on the antiquities and coins he has collected over his lifetime. Walter acquired coins and artefacts that interested him, so his collection, although containing many lovely examples, also contains many affordable specimens. Much of the material has been unavailable to the market for 30 to 50 years. Walter hopes that the items he collected will now find new homes with the next generation of collectors.
