‡FRANK O. SALISBURY, R.A. (1874-1962) Portrait of Lt. Duncan Retallick Glendinning (1st/7th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment) half-length, wearing uniform signed ‘Frank O. Salisbury’ (lower left) oil on canvas 40 1/2 x 28 1/2in (102.8 x 72.4cm) Two photographs of the sitter are also sold with this painting Provenance: The sitter’s family. In February 1915 the sitter at the age of seventeen was enlisted as a private in the Public Schools Battalion at Epsom and after only a week was gazetted second lieutenant in the Middlesex Regiment. He was promoted to Lieutenant in July of the same year, and later temporary Captain. It was not until November 6th 1917 that he was sent to France and after only six days active service on the Somme he was killed on November 16th. A friend and fellow officer Edgar Hargreaves writing the very next day to send his condolences to the family reported: I thought you would like to have some particulars of his death, and I have got these from an officer who was with him a second or two before he was hit. Duncan was talking and joking with his men when a German machine gun opened fire. A bullet hit the wire and, glancing off, unfortunately hit him. Our doctor who was on the spot went to him at once. Although it cannot lessen the grief we all feel at his loss, it is some consolation to know that the end was painless. We buried him this afternoon in the little village cemetery near our billets.... This was the village of Fremicourt. Duncan’s body was later moved to its present resting place in the British Cemetery at Bancourt.
