9th-11th century AD. A flat-section hoop formed as a guilloche of two three-strand bands of beaded wire. 9.63 grams, 21mm overall, 17.57mm internal diameter (approximate size British O, USA 7 1/4, Europe 14.98, Japan 14) (3/4"). Property of a London collector, acquired before 1980. For the same 'triple wire' design see Kolchin, B.A. and Makarova, T.I. Drevnyaya Rus', Byt i kultura, Moscow, 1997, plate , item; see discussion of the type in Hindman, S. et al Toward and Art History of Medieval Rings: A Private Collection, London, 2007, p.90-95. Very fine condition.
3rd century AD. A ring comprising three gussetted hoops and three discoid plaques, each with a central cabochon garnet; the two outer plaques with granules surrounding a filigree fillet, the median plaque with concentric fillets and granule clusters. 10 grams, 36mm overall, 17.75mm internal diameter (approximate size British O 1/2, USA 7 1/2, Europe 15.76, Japan 15) (1 1/2"). Property of an Essex gentleman; acquired in the late 1980s. Cf. Ward, A., Cherry, J. Gere, C. & Cartlidge, B. Rings Through the Ages, Fribourg, 1981, item 83. A very similar ring was found in the royal burial at Aarslev (Denmark); it seems to have been made from a small gold plaque, lavishly decorated with filigree and inlaid with dark purplish type of garnets known as almandines. Its similarities to a fibula from the same hoard indicate that it was part of a set of jewellery in the Roman style, and a coin of the Emperor Geta (211-12) underlines this connection. However, the style of the mount with three pairs of shoulders merging into a single hoop is distinctly Scandinavian. Very fine condition.
7th-9th century AD. A gilt-bronze figurine of a female standing with left hand on the chest and right hand over the groin, fingers spread; bulbous head with lentoid eyes, flange ears, integral loop above. 4.58 grams, 32mm (1 1/4"). Property of a German collector; acquired in the 1980s and 1990s. Cf. Pestell, T. Paganism in Early Anglo-Saxon East Anglia in Heslop ,T. A., Mellings, E.A. & Thofner, M. Icon? Art and Belief in Norfolk from Prehistory to the Present, Woodbridge, 2012 for similar, earlier examples; for similar face details, see female figurines found in Denmark (Hårby, Revninge, Tissø) and figures from St Manchan's shrine in Ireland (see Wilson, D.M. and Klindt-Jensen, O. Viking Art, New York, 1966, plate LXXVIII, item a"). The pose is typical of bronze and other figurines of early Anglo-Saxon date, from the first half of the 7th century, both males and females. However, the figure's face resembles those of Viking period figurines found in Denmark and in the Dublin area inhabited by Viking settlers. The figurine possibly represents Freyja, the goddess of love, fertility and magic. Very fine condition. Extremely rare.
9th-11th century AD. A round-section penannular twisted silver hoop with tapering terminals. 5.83 grams, 26mm overall, 17.28mm internal diameter (approximate size British O, USA 7, Europe 17 1/4, Japan 14) (1"). Property of a London businessman, from his grandfather's collection formed after World War II; thence by descent 1972. Cf. Sedov, B.B. Finno-Ugri i Balti v Epokhi Srednevekovija, Moscow, 1987, plate XXIII, item 9. [No Reserve] Fine condition.
3rd century AD. A keeled D-section gold hoop with carinated shoulders, elliptical plaque with inset carnelian, intaglio profile horse-head motif. 3.99 grams, 19mm overall, 17.59mm internal diameter (approximate size British O, USA 7 1/4, Europe 15.0, Japan 14) (3/4"). Property of a gentleman; acquired in the late 1960s-early 1970s. Cf. Ruseva-Slokoska, L. Roman Jewellery, Sofia, 1991, item 182. Very fine condition.
15th century AD. A solid iconographic ring with ridged bezel of three panels depicting an angel to the right, God the Father holding the infant Christ in the centre and the Virgin Mary to the left, as viewed; the band tapering evenly in width from the shoulders to the narrowest point at the back and decorated all around with six diagonal lines of beading set on the line cusps; in the broad bands adjacent to the bezel, engraved pairs of foliage motifs of flowers on stems with star between; inscribed to the inside of the bezel, a form of 'I AM LOYAL' in black letter script. 14.96 grams, 23.56mm overall, 19.84mm internal diameter (approximate size British T 1/2; USA 10; Europe 20; Japanese 20) (1"). Property of an East Sussex gentleman; acquired in the 1980s by his mother as part of a jewellery collection from a private collector in Theale, Newbury, Berkshire, UK; by descent 2012. See Dalton, O. M., Catalogue of the Finger Rings.....Bequeathed by Sir Augustus Wollaston Franks, BM 1912, no. 722 (for wording) and nos. 757-760 (for triple bezel panels"). Accompanied by an Art Loss Register certificate. The form of inscription wording 'LOIAL' (for loyal) in black letter is seen on another iconographic ring (Franks 722) of the same period and such rings are typically engraved with depictions of figures of saints, Mother and Child, God and Christ or similar. They combine religious imagery with romantic posies; they often feature the most venerated saints of the Middle Ages typically including Christopher, Catherine, Margaret, Barbara, and John the Baptist amongst others. Very fine condition. A large and wearable man's size.

UK art market, acquired prior to 1980. Supplied with a positive X-Ray Fluorescence metal analysis certificate. Very fine condition. Rare.
11th-12th century AD. A bronze leash junction comprising a larger and a smaller hoop joined at the base with a rotating swivel; hatching to the exterior faces. 4.24 grams, 28mm (1"). Cf. Hammond, B. British Artefacts vol.3 - Late Saxon, Late Viking & Norman, Witham, 2013, item 1.13-o. [No Reserve] Fine condition.

(George), '???????', '?????????' and partly erased fourth name, possibly repeat of '???????'. 124 grams, 18cm (7"). Property of a West London gentleman; acquired before 2000. Fine condition.
