1924 Doriot Flandrin Parant - (DFP), a landscape format, cord-tied hard cover brochure promoting the 'Nouveaux' 12CV Models A, B & M and the 10CV Models E & M in 24 single-sided pages, 6 of which are highly colourful depictions of various models in historic scenes by Alexis Kow (1900-1978 - his actual name being Alexis Kojewnikow), each with a waxed tissue guard. The French editorial gives praise to the attributes of the chassis, line drawings of four body styles, but also promoting coach-built options. The DFP name is significant because of its earlier connection with both H E and W O Bentley, the latter introducing the use of aluminium pistons, and achieving much success and acclaim in competition with various DFP models prior to 1919, indeed, WO built his prototype Three-Litre at the DFP Agency Service Garage in New Street Mews, London. His Brother continued with the Bentley & Bentley Agency until 1923. In very good condition, retaining its free-end-papers and cord tie, the brown cover rubbed with light wear. (1)

1935 Amilcar P‚gase. A rare, late 1935, 12pp brochure printed on card with sepia toned images of the 12cv and 14cv engines, chassis and body styles. The front-page image, and perhaps the editorial images are by G‚o Ham (Georges Hamel 1900-1972) with detailed text and specifications, the new 2490cc (14cv) competition version is illustrated and captioned. In good condition, the cover a little creased at the lower left corner. (1)

*Goldol Lionoil 'Super' Motor Oil. A large rectangular format three-colour single-sided advertising sign with turned edges, depicting the head of a lion in black and white, its claws over the word 'Goldol' in red and on the top of the letter 'O' in 'Lionoil', which is in large red and black block capital letters. Chipping to the edges, but the main body of the sign in reasonable condition, with minor surface loss to the white background and small sections of the lion's mane. 73 x 98cm (28 3/4 x 38 1/2-inches). Robert Benoist - Champion du Monde, by Roger Labric, a rare 1946 1st limited edition (500 copies) of this biography of a Grand Prix motor racing legend and war hero. With a preface by Charles Faroux and illustrations by G‚o Ham, this soft-bound book possesses monochrome photographs, detailed editorial and line drawings. In very good condition with an intact spine and uncut fore-edge, there are some pencil under-linings and notations. French text Historic Note: Robert Benoist was very successful in cyclecar races with Salmson before signing for Delage in 1924, and won the French Grand Prix in 1925 he then went on to win the French, Spanish, Italian and English GPs, earning the championship title for the French manufacturer. When the Delage company stopped racing, he joined the Bugatti team, finishing second in the 1928 San Sebasti n Grand Prix in Spain. He was made head of the Bugatti competition department and masterminded the company's Le Mans programme. In 1937 he partnered with Jean-Pierre Wimille to win the 24 hours of Le Mans[1] endurance race. Following that victory, Benoist retired, but continued to run Bugatti's racing department until he joined the French Air Force. (1)

Miller, 609 Squadron was killed, when his aircraft collided head-on with Bf110 and exploded over Chesilbourne, near Kingcome, the main wreckage fell east of Doles Ash. (6)

WWII C Type brown leather flying helmet and oxygen mask, chamois leather lining compete with earphones with Air Ministry markings and stores reference number 10A/13466, with a pair of Mk VII flying goggles, the helmet inscribed 'Manchip' together with a Sidcup flying suit Size 2, with liner and collar, with tailors label stamped with stores reference numbers and 22C/838 and Air Ministry zippers plus original Flying Log Book and related paperwork including photographs of the recipient and bomb release photographs Sergeant RH. Manchip qualified as an Air Bomber (Navigation) on 10 December 1943 with No7 AOS, Royal Canadian Air Force, the log book commences from 27 August 1943, various training exercises in Anson and Bolingbroke aircraft (No.5 Bombing and Gunnery School, Dafoe). November 1943 stationed at La Prairie, Manitoba. Moved to 6 (O). A.F.U., Staverton 4 April 1944 further training including map reading and pinpointing etc, also stationed at Husbands Bosworth (Wellington), Market Harborough (Wellington), Conversion Unit at Wigsley, Nottinghamshire (Stirling), Syerston (Lancaster), transferred to 630 Squadron 22 October 1944; 24 operations from 1 November 1944 to 22 March 1945 including Landbergen (Dortmund-Emms Canal) on 4 November 1944, a further raid on the canal two days later, the lot includes bomb release photographs and a rare H2S map for these raids, he also took part in a raid on Dresden on the night of 13/14 February 1945, later service in May 1945 saw Manchip "ferrying prisoners of war", last entry 15 July 1955, total flying time 536hrs 45mins. THE 1914 STAR TRIO & TUNIC OF RSM J CAMPBELL 2 R BERKS REGT. A 1914 Star named to 5629 C Q M S J Campbell. 2 R Berks, on its original ribbon with an MID oakleaf attached. British War & Victory Medals named to 5629 W O Cl 1 J Campbell R Berks. John Cambell the son of Daniel and Sarah Campbell, husband of Louise Campbell was Killed in Action aged 36 years. He landed in France on the 6th November 1914, his MIC details confirm he was awarded a Clasp. He was Mentioned in Despatches on the 13/6/1916 in the L Gazette 29623 (Gen Haig). Born in Belfast he later lived in Southsea, after his marriage he lived in Dagshai, Micawber Avenue, Hillingdon Village, Middlesex. Killed in Action on the 15th October 1917, he is buried in Prowse Point, Military Cemetery, France. CWGC Confirms his rank as Regimental Sergeant Major, 2nd R Berks Regt. A copy of his last letter home from the front, is with the medals. He was waiting to be commissioned, signing his letter with his nickname 'Fred'. An original photograph of RSM Campbell wearing his Dress Tunic, is with the medals. His original Red Dress Tunic and Sash, with rank on the right sleeve is with the medals. In good condition with General Service buttons (two missing) and bullion sleeve badges.

Cased similar 50mm award with I A K or A I K obverse, reverse engraved with, Won by R O Kelly's William Osler 1906. A cased HM silver 45mm diameter award, with Terrier obverse. A MAGNIFICENT (9th) Q O LANCERS SILVER CENTREPIECE ON PLINTH. Hallmarks for 1872 by the London Makers Stephen Smith, of considerable size and fine detail. A 9th Lancers Officer with lance in hand, stood beside his horse beneath a palm tree. Complete with sword, saddle, reins, pistol, and associated patrolling equipment of the period. With rocky ground below and engraved on a plain rock-face, 'A 9th Lancer Indian Mutiny 1857-58'. Then below this where horse, officer and palm tree are all screw mounted hence detachable, a hard wooden shaped base. Below this is the oval shaped lower plinth mount, adorned with a 9th Lancers badge on one panel, in silver form. This taken from the 9th Lancers Pouch design AR entwined with reversed AR, in the associated lot. Another silver plate on a plinth panel is engraved with the following details. Surgeon John James Clifford MD was attached to the 9th Lancers around 1854, serving for many years as their Surgeon including during the Indian Mutiny. It was in this War that he was awarded the Indian Mutiny Medal with three bars, Lucknow, Relief of Lucknow and Delhi. (See associated previous lot) It was also here that the Regiment were given their nickname, The Delhi Spearmen for their actions . Renamed the 9th Lancers in 1861, with several Victoria Crosses awarded to the Regiment over various Wars and Campaigns. Described as 'The beau Ideal of what a British Cavalry Regiment ought to be in oriental countries. The centrepiece bearing hallmarks to tree roots, ground and many other parts. The plinth has a later replacement wooden end turned end fitted. John James Clifford was born in Sligo Ireland. 8th September 1821. MD Edinburgh 1843. 7th August 1846 S Staff 18th August 1846 96 Foot. S Staff 2nd Class 9th Dragoons 27th January 1854. A Surgeon 2nd Class 9th Dragoons 28th August 1857. Surgeon Major 9th Dragoons 7th August 1866. Retired on Half Pay with Hon Rank of D I C 2nd December 1871 Died at Slough Buckinghamshire 3rd September 1889. His Will states, John James Clifford or sometimes James John Clifford, formerly of Chair in County Tipperary in Ireland. Late of Cloonburg, MacKenzie Street, Slough in the County of Buckinghamshire. Surgeon of the 9th Lancers who died 3rd September 1889 at Cloonburg. The will was proved at the Principal Registry by the Revd George Hewitt Hodson, of The Vicarage Enfield Middlesex. THE CANADIAN MEMORIAL CROSS & LOG BOOK etc of P O M L DAVIS. A fascinating collection of ephemera and items relating to Pilot Officer Michael Ludlow Davis 159 Sqdn Royal Canadian Air Force. Service Number J/86883. The son of Captain Herbert Ludlow and Olga Gwen Davis of Bombay India, aged 19 years. Lost with the entire crew in Daring Diana a B-24 Liberator, shot down and 'lost' for many years. Michael enlisted a day after his 18th Birthday, in the Royal Canadian Air Force, straight from Boarding School. His father a Nautical advisor to the Government of India, also Controller of Indian Shipping. Michael had been sent to live with his Uncle and cousins in Canada, aged 16 years. A natural gifted scholar and writer of poetry, he saw the chance of action sooner, if he ignored his qualifying for a Pilots course and became an Air Gunner. After training he arrived back in England in March 1943, proceeding to Harwell for final operational training. It was here he met and befriended his Pilot Allan Arnold, also fell in love, with his cousins Mary Lees friend, Sheila. He was delighted when in October 1943 they received a posting to India, where the family were united again. Assigned originally to 355 Sqdn, they later transferred to 159 Sqdn in January 1944. They flew together in Five Combat Missions, totalling 17.1/2 hrs airborne. 18 young men crew of the tow 159 Sdqn Bombers were downed over Rangoon on the 29th February 1944. Destroyed by two Japanese Fighter Planes, flown by Lt Hiroshi Takiguchi and W O Bunichi Yamaguchi. They worked in cooperation with Ground Searchlights, that blinded the Pilots and Crews prior to the attacks. Poetry , Letters , Documents too many to list, are with the lot. A superb Pastel of a handsome young Michael in uniform, with AG wings some 17 1/2" x 15 " approx in an Oak Frame. His Canadian Memorial Cross is named P O M L Davis J86883. His Log Book includes the letter dated 17/11/1947, forwarding it to his Mother. His final mission on the 29th February 1944, states 'Failed to Return.' A tremendous effort to find and locate the aircraft was made, it was a relative of a casualty from the USA who started things rolling. Related to Sjt C A G Plank, lost on the same aircraft, Matthew Poole travelled from the USA to find the graves of 7 unknown airmen. Despite many efforts and little or no facts to act on, he persevered. A Memorial Service for the Crews of Pegasus and Daring Diana, was attended at St Clements Danes Church, London on the 28th February 1998. Attended by Families and ex Squadron Members, it was conducted by Sir Anthony Acland. Copies of the Service and biographies of the lost airman, are with this lot. Describes as handsome by those who knew him, his Portrait and photographs confirm it.
