PARSON SAYS WILL YOU BE LEARNIN' YOUR PART FOR 'THE MERCHANT O' VENICE' black wax crayon on textured paper, signed, written in pencil to lower left 'for this week's edition', printed date 18 Jan 1939 and signed in pen W.A. Sillince to verso 18cm x 23cm Note: William Sillince was a painter and illustrator born in Battersea, London. He studied at Regent Street Polytechnic and Central School of Art, London. A regular contributor to Punch, he taught at Brighton School of Art 1952 - 1971 and also taught graphic design at Hull School of Art. Between 1928 - 36, he worked as an advertising artist, turning freelance, and he began to contribute regularly to Punch. He became the magazine's Art Editor in 1937 and retained that position until the early 1950s. He continued to contribute to Punch until his death. He was elected to the associate membership of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1949 and became a full member nine years later. He was also elected to the Royal Society of British Artists (1948). His work is represented in collections of the British Museum, Imperial War Museum, National Gallery of New Zealand, and Sunderland, Worthing and Hull Art Galleries. Almost without exception, all his works are pencil on paper and are unframed.
