Scrap Album / Commonplace Book. C. 1880s. Qto. leather bound, gilt, volume containing a number of photographs of individuals whose family names include : Stracey, Maddison, Onslow, Harbord, Fellowes, Crowfoot and the Marquis of Devonshire. There are a number of photos of unidentified individuals, some in military uniform together with a small uniformed group photo entitled "The Norfolk Artillery." Other images include significant houses, topographical locations, water colour scenes & vignette decorative adornments. There are a number of photogravures. Provenance indicates that this album is linked with that featured in Lot 734. CONDITION REPORT: Binding a little worn at the ext. but generally sound and complete. Contents a little dusty o/w vg.
Aesop's Fables. Translated by V. Vernon-Jones. 1912. 8vo Hb. Original green cloth with gilt decorations and title. Colour plates by Arthur Rackham with titled tissue guards. Together with two mounted,framed and glazed colour plates by Rackham illustrating 'Ride of the Valkyries'. CONDITION REPORT: Binding with some minor wear at the extremities and fore-edge slant through having been read o/w very sound and clean with gilt decoration clearly evident. A few slight foxing spots on decorated paste-down and eps o/w very clean and tight. Nice copy of a title often found in much more dilapidated state. Framed illustrations derived from a similar book on Wagner's work illustrated by Rackham - generally vg.

This Lot is part of a substantial collection of books and ephemera consigned to auction by the Imperial War Museum which represent duplicates of items already in their collection. The material covers the 1st. & 2nd. World Wars, other areas of 20th.C. Military History and more general, related subjects. It will therefore bear evidence of this fact to varying degrees in the form of library stamps, booking sheets etc. Evidence of this provenance varies considerably. A number of books have a standard library binding. A substantial number retain the original binding. In the context of its status as an ex-library collection the condition of individual Lots varies - some might be considered 'poor' (though scarce), most are 'good' to 'very good'. Interested buyers/bidders are advised to make their own physical checks on Lots prior to submitting or making bids well before the day of the sale.

Plan of London, W. H. Smith and Son, nd. C. 1878. Folding linen-backed map, hand coloured. 32.5 x 23.5 inches. Map folded into green cloth covers, gilt, with publisher's advertisements on verso of front cover. The map has a colour key to show the river, parks, railway (over and underground lines), tramway and omnibus routes and the postal districts. An early edition of this map which was published over three decades C. 1875 - 1910. CONDITION REPORT: Cover a little worn at the edges but overall very sound. Map with one closed fold tear on upper section o/w generally clean and bright.

Pierre de Ronsard (1524-1585) was a French poet. Humbert Wolfe (1885-1940), was an Italian-born English poet. A limited edition of one hundred and fifty numbered copies printed on hand made paper and signed by Mr. Humbert Wolfe. This is number 82. 'The Times' London, Thursday, November 7, 1805. An original copy containing Dispatches from Vice Admiral Collingwood featuring a detailed account of the Battle of Trafalgar and the death of Nelson transmitted by the Admiralty. There are also lists of killed and wounded and an account of Nelson's last moments. Together with an original copy of 'The Daily News, London, Wednesday, January 21, 1846' being the first edition to be edited by Charles Dickens and featuring an article by him entitled 'Travelling Letters'. Both items 'double glazed' (!) and framed. CONDITION REPORT: Slight loss along creases of a fold o/w vg.
