A very rare piece of history - Captain J.E. Crossland R.N.R., R.D. Royal Navy Reserve Medal for long and distinguished service, with miniature in silver gilt. British War Medal World War 1. Mercantile Marine War Medal 1919 CQD Medal named in the original box. A 14ct gold cased pocket watch and chain in the original presentation box in working order presented to the recipient by the President of the United States. Crossland from Hamilton Ontario schooled on board HMS Conway, he left with a double extra certificate, a winner of Seamanship and English History as well as other prizes. He was for years aboard the Kirkwood in Liverpool it was dismasted and foundered in the North Atlantic after being stranded on the Bar of the Columbia River in Portland. Crossland took his first examination and from that was appointed Second Mate of the Earls Court, and other Liverpool vessel. After 12 months on the ship he was one of 6 survivors after she was wrecked on the Margin Sands in the Bristol Channel. He then took another examination and became Second Mate on the Clme and Proper a British Steamer belonging to Cardiff thus enabling him to take his Masters Certificate. In 1887 he joined P & O where he was 5th Officer of the Carthage. He rose to 2nd Officer on the Himalaya which were steamships. He then joined White Star and obtained commission in the Royal Naval Reserves in 1892. He took part in the Bombardment of Suda Bay Crete in 1897. He was awarded the Royal Naval Reserve Decoration for long and distinguished service by King Edward VII in 1908. He had commanded the Tropic, Bovic, Corinthic and Ceramic. The Great War broke out in 1914 when Crossland was commanding the Athentic, he was transferred to the Cymric carrying munitions and was one of 5 vessels to get past the German submarines. After this he was on another 2 ships Corinthic and Ceramic. In March 1920 he was transferred to the Athenic and it was during this time in command effected a rescue at sea. The Athenic received a wireless call near San Salvador from the Munamar, a steamer which was hard ashore with 83 stranded passengers. The Athenic saved them all along with their baggage. This earned him a much prized recognition from the U.S. Goverment, and this Waltham gold watch was presented to him by President Harding, also from the American people. During this period he received this CQD Medal in silver gilt and in its presentation box one of possibly only 4-5 struck. The passengers of the Munamar wrote him a personal thank you letter which has been framed as you can see, is part of this wonderful collection. Captain Crossland retired and his last voyage arrived in Southampton on 28th September 1923.
