WINTGENS KURT: (1894-1916) German Leutnant of World War I, a Flying Ace officially credited with 18 victories. Wintgens was the first military fighter pilot to score a victory over an opposing aircraft, while piloting an aircraft armed with a synchronised machine gun. Wintgens was awarded with the Pour le Mérite (Blue Max) and the Iron Cross and was Killed in Action at the young age of 22. An extremely rare, brief A.L.S., Wintgens, with rank ('Leutnant') beneath, on one side of a Feldpostkorrespondenzkarte, n.p. ('O. U.', i.e. 'In the field'), 23rd July 1916, to Hans (?) Grobel, in German. Wintgens sends his correspondent thanks for their kind congratulations. Further signed by Wintgens to the verso in the return address panel, along with his rank and details of his division and company etc., in his hand. Addressed in an unidentified hand to Grobel and with several postal cancellations. Together with an original vintage unsigned 5 x 3.5 photograph of Wintgens standing in a full length pose, in uniform, alongside his aircraft. Autographs of Wintgens are extremely rare in any form as a result of his early death. Very slightly irregularly trimmed to the upper edge, not affecting the text or signature, VG, 2 Wintgens may have been responding to congratulations received upon his award of the Pour le Mérite (Blue Max) which had occurred on the 1st July 1916. He was only the fourth airman to receive the prestigious medal, having completed the required (at the time) eight victories over enemy aircraft. The present letter is written almost exactly two months to the day before Wintgens was killed.
LE BOUTILLIER OLIVER: (1895-1983) American Fighter Pilot of World War I, a Flying Ace officially credited with 10 victories. Le Boutillier was one of the pilots involved in the air fight in which Manfred von Richthofen ('The Red Baron') was killed. Signed 4.5 x 3 photograph of Le Boutillier standing in a full length pose outdoors alongside three of his fellow squadron members and a dog. Signed ('Capt O. C. 'Boots' Le Boutillier') in bold black ink to a clear area at the head of the image, adding '209 Squadron R.A.F.' in his hand beneath his signature. Annotated in ink in an unidentified hand to the verso indicating that the photograph was taken at Bertangles in France in 1918 and identifying the other men as Lieutenants Drake, Harker and Rowards and naming the dog as Dick, the squadron's mascot.
