Il leone dal corpo in verde smeraldo presenta una rottura restaurata del portaincenso; mentre quello dal corpo in verde mela presenta una rottura restaurata della testa e della parte superiore del portaincenso. Piccola crepa alla base. Altezza 23,3 cm I leoni buddhisti, detti anche "cani di Fo", appaiono spesso in coppia: il maschio con una sfera o una perla sotto la zampa, a simboleggiare la forza e la potenza dell'impero cinese. La femmina con un cucciolo di leone sotto la zampa, ad indicare la discendenza, la crescita e il benessere. - Moulded ceramic with polychrome painting over the glaze. Fronte e retro cartonati. Editore Hasegawa Takejiro, Tokyo 1891. Formato oban tate-e (ciascuna stampa 36,6 x 24,6 cm) Toyohara Chikanobu (nomi d’artista anche Yoshu Chikanobu, Ikkakusai, Hashimoto Chikanobu) fu tra i più importanti e prolifici artisti del periodo Meiji (1868-1912). I suoi soggetti e la tecnica incisoria sono nella tradizione del ukiyo-e, ma l’artista ha anche colto stimoli provenienti da arte, moda e costumi occidentali. La serie “Ventiquattro esempi di pietà filiale” è una parodia al femminile del famoso testo omonimo, redatto in Cina in epoca Yuan (1279-1368) ma con radici ancora più antiche. Toyohara Chikanobu (known also as Yoshu Chikanobu, Ikkakusai, Hashimoto Chikanobu) was one of the most important and prolific artists of the Meiji period (1868-1912). His subjects and engraving technique are in the tradition of ukiyo-e, but the artist also took inspiration from art, fashion and Western ways. The series “Twenty-four examples of filial piety” is a famale parody of the famous namesake text, drawn up in China in the Yuan period (1279-1368) but with even older roots. Su ambo i lati della coperta di sella è inciso finemente uno scenario con due rocce che si erigono sull’acqua e due pipistrelli che volteggiano tra le nuvole. 7 x 10,8 x 3 cm All'epoca dell'imperatore Qianlong, il trono imperiale era fiancheggiato da coppie di elefanti e le manifatture imperiali produssero innumerevoli immagini di elefanti, non solo in giada e in lapislazzuli, ma anche in pittura e in altri materiali come il bronzo dorato, l'avorio o il cloisonné. - China, Qing dynasty, Qianlong reign period (1736-1795) Céladon-coloured nephrite on one side, with russet vein on the other, carved in the round but plain. La figura ha uno specchio (?) convesso nella mano destra, mentre l'oggetto che teneva nella sinistra è rotto. I lunghi capelli sono legati a coda di cavallo. Base in legno massiccio con intarsi infilo d’argento. Altezza 22,8 cm (base inclusa) - Lapis lazuli or sodalite: stone in matt ultramarine with some grey specks. Some tiny holes (on the skirt, the ribbon hanging from the waist, between the left sleeve and elbow). Base in legno intagliato. In alcuni punti le venature hanno fatto saltare piccole parti dell'intaglio, così sul nastro di uno dei due strumenti o nel fiocco dell'elaborata acconciatura. Sul verso una vena più grande attraversa la parte inferiore della figura. Altezza 12,2 cm (base inclusa) Con la lunga vesta plissettata a coda di pesce, la ballerina si è posata a terra per un attimo. Nelle mani tiene due oggetti dal capo sferico con la coda in morbido tessuto: potrebbero essere strumenti a percussione con cui accompagna la sua danza. POMPEO MARIANI 1857-1927 - POMPEO MARIANI 1857-1927 Marina con volo di gabbiani Olio su tela, firmato al recto in basso a destra. 126,5 x 173 cm Tra i maggiori esponenti della pittura italiana dell’Ottocento, Pompeo Mariani, fu un artista eclettico la cui vasta produzione risulta ancora oggi difficilmente ascrivibile ad una maniera o a movimenti puntualmente identificabili nel panorama storico-artistico dell’epoca. Sebbene, difatti, abbia ottenuto in vita un notevole successo di pubblico e critica, Ugo Ojetti lo definì addirittura “il grande Impressionista Lombardo”, nel Novecento la sua arte ha subito una leggera battuta d’arresto proprio perché questi suoi modi personalissimi di dipingere, interpretare e definire la propria arte non sono stati facilmente incanalati in un percorso definito. Fortunatamente il mercato continua a dar prova della sua eccezionalità con un vivo ed appassionato interesse evidente sia nel successo ottenuto dai suoi “esterni”, fra tutte le grandi marine liguri, sia per le scene in “interno” realizzate tra i caffè alla moda e gli affollati Casino di Milano, Bordighera e Montecarlo. Del resto la sua produzione abbraccia un vasto repertorio di temi che spaziano dal vivace orientalismo ispirato dal viaggio in Egitto del 1881, alla descrizione della natura dal vero, alla ritrattistica e rappresentazione della vita della borghesia della Belle Èpoque, passando per la produzione di piccoli acquerelli, raffinati disegni e strepitose acqueforti monotipiche. Il tutto declinato dal sapiente accordo di una varietà di influssi incredibile la quale, memore dell’esperienza Romantica italiana, fa sue le modalità pittoriche dell’Impressionismo francese, accostandovisi con l’occhio sapiente di un artista a tutto tondo. - Oil on canvas, signed lower right recto. 49.80 x 68.11 in. € 8000

Al centro del coperchio della scatola è impressa una peonia. Gli angoli sono evidenziati da costolature. Il vasetto è decorato con un fregio di fiori di loto. Invetriatura leggermente consunta, alcune piccole crepe alla base della scatola. diametro 8,8 e 5,8 cm - South-east Chine (Fujian?), Song or Yuan dynasty, 13th-14th century White porcelain and light grey stoneware produced and decorated in a mould; the glazing ends over the base. There is a peony moulded in the centre of the box cover. The corners are sharpened by ribs. The jar is decorated with a frieze of lotus flowers. COPPIA DI FORMELLE Italia, probabilmente Toscana, XI-XIII secolo - A COUPLE OF PANELS Italy, probably Tuscany, 11th-13th Century Conglomerato cementizio, romboidali, sagomate, il bordo con fermagli a mascherone. In una si riconosce la sirena bicaudata, nell’altra una figura femminile mitologica. Molto consunte. 24 x 24 x 9,5 cm L’immagine della sirena bicaudata ha origini celtiche, oltre ad essere entrata nell’immaginario occidentale come simbolo di femminilità e fertilità sottendendo all’eterno ciclo di incarnazione delle anime, simboleggiato evidentemente dalle sue nature complementari, umana e animale. Fu poi mutuata come simbolo cristiano, per rappresentare la natura duale della donna, incarnazione medievale di una costante dicotomia tra bene-male ed istinto-ragione. In Italia, tale simbologia è particolarmente diffusa in Toscana dove molti capitelli di chiese medievali e rinascimentali sono decorati con l’immagine della sirena bicaudata. Tra gli esempi più significativi possiamo ricordare la decorazione dell’architrave del portone d’entrata della Pieve di Corzignano a Pienza, o ancora quella dell’ombone della Pieve romanica di San Pietro a Gropina. - Concrete, rhomboidal, contoured, the edge with mask clasps. FIGURA DI GRANDE FUNZIONARIO DAOISTA (CAISHEN?) Cina, dinastia Qing, XVIII secolo - A LARGE FIGURE OF DAOIST OFFICIAL (CAISHEN?) Legno intagliato e dipinto in rosso, nero, oro e bianco. Il funzionario è in posizione dinamica, con i piedi poggiati su nuvole. Nella mano destra innalza un lingotto (o un libro?), la sinistra è oggi vuota, ma conteneva forse un vasetto colmo, oggetto simbolo, insieme al lingotto d'oro, del dio della ricchezza Caishen. Eccellente stato di conservazione. Laccato e dipinto in nero, rosso e oro. Iscrizione con datazione di lato. Cartellino “1736 Cheng Lung” (Qianlong). Nicchia sigillata. Altezza 27 cm - China, Qing dynasty, 18th Century Carved wood painted in red, black, gold, and white. The official is in a dynamic position, with his feet resting on a cloud. His right hand holds up a ingot (or a book?), the left is now empty, but perhaps contained a full vase, which together with the gold ingot are symbols of the God of Wealth Caishen. An Italian maiolica albarello mid 16th century, attributed to Pesaro, inscribed in blue with 'Confet o cingul orum' on a wide panel beneath a portrait medallion inscribed 'RB', on an ochre ground with white and blue scrollwork, some restoration to the rim and neck, 26.5cm. Provenance: The Luigi Koelliker Collection, Sotheby's, 3rd December 2008, lot 1. Cf. Rudolf Drey, Apothecary Jars, pp.56-57, pl.22A for another jar from this well known series. Previously attributed to Faenza or Castel Durante, these jars inscribed RB (probably for a pharmacy) are now believed to have been made at Pesaro.
