Original vintage travel advertising poster Morocco By The Bland Line. Bland Line, Gibraltar. The company entered shipowning in 1861 initially to operate between Gibraltar and Tangier. In 1864 a passenger ship was built to run between Gibraltar and Moroccan ports and trade later expanded to the North African coast, Spain and the U.K. In 1921 the first cargo crossing was made between Huelva and Norfolk, Va. and Baltimore but by 1930, due to the trade depression, routes were confined to Morocco, Spain and Portugal. The Spanish Civil War caused a large drop in trade and in a further blow in 1969 the Spanish Government closed the Spain - Gibraltar border which seriously affected the ferry service to Tangier. The border remained closed until 1985 and in 1986 Bland Line withdrew from shipowning. Good condition, rusty spots on left margin, creases and small tears on margins, pin holes in corners, red pencil signs on the image. Ship mentioned in the poster, Gibel Sarsar was 1898 ex- Isis, 1920 purchased from P&O Line, London renamed Gibel Sarsar, 1926 scrapped. Country: Gibraltar (UK). Year: 1920s. Designer: Unknown. Original vintage travel advertising poster Travel B.I. - "With the greatest of pleasure" - in the new liners - "Kenya" "Uganda" - Europe-East. British India Steam Navigation Company ("BI") was formed in 1856 as the Calcutta and Burmah Steam Navigation Company. The company had been formed out of Mackinnon, Mackenzie & Co, a trading partnership of the Scots William Mackinnon and Robert Mackenzie, to carry mail between Calcutta and Rangoon. It became British India SN Co in 1862. Under the hand of Lord Inchcape, who had become chairman in 1913, the company became part of the P&O group of companies in 1914 through a complex amalgamation, but continued with its own identity and organisation for another nearly 60 years until 1972, when it was entirely absorbed into P&O. KENYA ship was in operation 1951-1969. UGANDA ship was in operation 1952-1972. 1972 transferred to P & O Line, 1982 used in Falkland Campaign, 1985 laid up, 1986 sold for scrap, renamed Triton, blown ashore at Kaohsiung in cyclone and capsized, demolished after 1992. There is evidence that the shank has been resized. It is not hallmarked or stamped. The principle diamond measures 7.54mm x 7.70mm in diameter. The setting prevents measuring the depth. The approximate principle diamond weight is 1.70 carat approximately. The approximate qualities of the diamonds are; colour G/H, clarity SI1/SI2. Gross weight 3.8 grams.
