(Printer); Published by Peacock Press, Plymstock, Devon, 1942; reprinted from a tract of 1594 in the Plymouth Museum; woodcut frontis and capital pieces. End paper reads: 120 copies have been set and printed by W. O. Reynolds at the Peacock Press, Plymstock, Devon and completed on the first day of November, 1942. The text has been taken from a mercator tract printed by John Windet in 1594 being the first published account of a Sir Francis Drake's voyage around the world. This is number 98.

Engel, Otto Heinrich -- "Das Häuschen der Witwe" (Gespräch an der Tür eines Friesenhauses auf Föhr).Öl auf Leinwand. 104 x 121 cm. Unten rechts signiert "O. H. Engel", verso auf dem Keilrahmen bezeichnet "Am Sonntag nachmittag" sowie ebenda und auf dem Rahmen diverse alte Ausstellungsetiketten. 1908/09.Vorliegendes, lange verschollen geglaubtes Werk, gehört zu den Hauptwerken des hessischen Malers Otto H. Engel. Er begann das großformatige Gemälde 1908 in Alkersum und vollendete es 1909 während der Wintermonate in Berlin. Noch im selben Jahr präsentierte er es auf Ausstellungen in Berlin und wahrscheinlich Dresden im berühmten Kunstsalon Emil Richter. Wie ein Brief nahelegt, arbeitete Engel bereits 1906 an ersten Vorläufern des Motivs: „Noch ein kleines Bild auf Holz habe ich angefangen, das winzige Häuschen der Witwe Alida Sörensen. Sie soll in der Tür stehen und zwei Mädchen mit vollem Schmuck davor.“ (zit. nach Ulrich Schulte-Wülwer: Föhr, Amrum und die Halligen in der Kunst, Heide 2003, S. 142).Engel hatte Friesland und seine Lebenswelt zum Mittelpunkt seines Schaffens gemacht. Im Sommer 1892 unternahm er noch als Student der Münchner Akademie eine erste Reise auf die Halligen, Oland und Gröde, seit 1901 verbrachte er jährlich seine Sommeraufenthalte auf Föhr, zunächst in Alkersum und später im eigenen Atelier in Nieblum. Engel gehörte zu den Wegbereitern der modernen Malerei in Deutschland und war Mitglied der Münchner Secession sowie zusammen mit Max Liebermann Gründungsmitglied der Berliner Secession. Den vom Impressionismus und der Freilichtmalerei abgeleiteten Stil wandte er an, um eine im Verschwinden begriffene, als „ursprünglich“ wahrgenommene Lebenswelt künstlerisch empfindsam einzufangen. Den Szenen liegt immer etwas Erzählendes zugrunde, das nie in die Falle des allzu Genrehaften tappt. Die herbe Frische der Farbpalette hat bis heute nicht an Lebendigkeit eingebüßt. Bevorzugte Sujets waren Frauen in ihren Trachten, aber auch Dorfstraßen und Friesenstuben, die neben ihrem Erfolg bei Sammlern vor allem auch für die Bewohner und Bewohnerinnen von Föhr eine identitätsstiftende Wirkung hatten. Das Schwert hat eine Konfiguration aus Shinogizukuri und Iroimune, Klinge mit Mustern Muji-Hada und Suguha sowie O-Maru. Das Koshira-e besteht aus einer braun lackierten Saya, einem eisernen Tsuba, einem Tsuka mit Samekawa umwickelt, mit Blumenzweigen verzierten Fuchi-Kashira, sowie Menuki in Chrysanthemenform. Bezeichnung: Monogrammiert, datiert und nummeriert auf der Unterseite: O F 1911 8/9. Gießerstempel: Daneben Gießerstempel: SCHMÄKE DÜSSELDORF. Bei der Maske handelt es sich um einen posthumen Guss. Eine Auflage von 9 Exemplaren wurde 1978 im Zuge der Erstellung des Oeuvreverzeichnisses und der großen Retrospektive im Rheinischen Landesmuseum in Bonn begonnen. Damals wurden 3 von 9 Exemplaren gegossen. Ein Exemplar ging in privaten Besitz und zwei gingen an Museen. Diese Auflage wurde nun beendet. 2 Exemplare sind für den freien Markt bestimmt. 4 Exemplare sind für weitere Museen vorgesehen. Der Bozetto der Maske befand sich im Besitz der Nachfahren Otto Freundlichs und wurde nach dem Guss bei Schmäke zusammen mit anderen Werken und Archivalien dem Rheinischen Archiv für Künstlernachlässe zur dauernden Verwahrung übergeben.Provenienz:- Privatsammlung Nordrhein-WestfalenLiteratur: - Vgl.
