Ruggiero Leoncavallo (Naples, 1857 - Montecatini Terme, 1919)Autographed letter signed (R. Leoncavallo), not dated, by the Italian composer and librettist. Addressed to Virginia Reiter in Genoa, one of the most important 19th century actresses. A beautiful letter in which Leoncavallo freely expresses his thoughts on art: "Questa povera anima mia é come quell'arpa eolia di cui avete parlato. E quando una mano magistrale di artista vero fa vibrare su di essa la nota dolorosa e umana, allora è (...) é una sinfonia immensa che si leva è (...) i dolori passati (...) le tormentose ansie di tutta la povera umanità sofferente si mescolano (...) ed il dolore (...) mi schiude le porte del mondo benedetto dell'arte". He then shows great enthusiasm for any artistic events he can experience: "qualunque esse siano: un'opera di Bellini o di Wagner, un quadro di Michelangelo, un bello squarcio di Musset o di Zola, il puro gorgheggio di una Batti o il grido e l'anima della Reiter (...) io mi sento artista tal da comprendere l'arte come generalmente non si comprende!". The letter ends excitedly: "mi avete data la voglia di comporre qualche cosa!". 4 pp. In-8°, on the "Grand Hotel de Genes" letterhead. Envelope with autograph address included.
Igor Markevitch (Kiev, 1912 - Antibes, 1983)Two autograph letters signed by the acclaimed conductor, dated respectively April 23, 1975 and April 15, 1976, both addressed to his friend and colleague Cesare Nordio (1891-1977). About the possibility of conducting the Nordio's opera: ""Le scrivo per tenerla al corrente del nostro progetto di programmare il suo Poema per violino ed orchestra (...) abbiamo deciso di cercare un'altra possibilità, magari con Rai-Roma o Rai-Torino dove dovrei dirigere varii concerti se possiamo metterci d'accordo per le date"". 3 pp. In-8°, on letterhead paper. The Greek text '????? ??' appears to be derived from the verb ???????? 'to be fatal' or 'to be destined by the fate', so '[it was] not fatal'.

2nd-3rd century A.D. The monogram in Roman capital letters, ('R'+'M'+'A', with the 'O' represented by the circular rim of the brooch itself), a palindrome 'AMOR'; complete with pin. Cf. Property of a Surrey, UK, collector.The brooch is composed of the stylised letters ‘RMA’. When viewed from the obverse RMA + the circle of the brooch form a monogram for ‘Roma’. Roma refers to both the city and its divine personification, the Dea Roma. But if RMA is read from right to left (or the brooch is viewed from the opposite side), the letters display a monogram for ‘AMOR’, the Latin name for Cupid, the god of love. The phrase pertains to Roma-Amor, a widely recognised palindrome espousing Roman wordplay in the ancient times.
