A painted icon on a rectangular wooden base with mounting slot to the reverse; tempera and gold leaf; facing nimbate image of St. Nikolas with right hand raised in benediction, left hand holding an open Gospel with Greek text, elaborate saltires to the body and crosses to the robe; seated upon a gold seat with red cushions; red Greek text flanking the head, with O A?IOC to the left, VIKO?(AC) to the right, 'Saint Nikolas'; mounted on a modern frame. 413 grams total, 28.5 x 21.5cm including frame (11 1/4 x 8 1/2"). From a London collection; acquired from Zurich, Switzerland, in the 1980s. Fine condition.
17th century AD. A D-section silver hoop with flat elliptical bezel, pelleted border enclosing intaglio portrait bust of King Charles I flanked by 'CR' (Carolus Rex, King Charles").
