'It was divine of you Itha, to send me that book of Oscar Wilde's. I loved the subtle sayings that you had underlined, though I think he was a bit of a poseur'. She continues, 'I had such a hectic time this term at Camposenea. I got ill, had 'flu very badly, and the new matron was a hopeless lazy hag, and didn't look after me at all, so Daddy wired to Wick that I was to stay with a friend of mummies in Paris, and to go to her doctor... It made me very miserable, and I've been really rotten in health. It had all been such fun too - being in the 'premier' and sleeping at the cottage. Charbonnier came to give us history lessons which was faintly nerve-racking. Yvon was marvellous to me all the time, I dont know what I should have done without her'. Adding, 'I was very fond of Campo weren't you? And now everything is over. I could never bear to go back there again, and walk as a stranger in the place where I once lived. Do you know what I mean?... In a years' time we will be forgotten there. "Ships that pass in the night". Menabilly Par Cornwall, 6th April 1962, 'Bing', two pages, to Maureen Baker-Munton, ('Dearest Maureen') an update letter on medical matters of Maureen and du Maurier's son Christian Browning. 'I'm so sorry you have not been well. I have scoured my Medical Dic, and it does sound a bit like glands, or even thyroid??... I do hope you get to the bottom of it. Nothing so worrying or wearing as weeks of feeling rotten... I've had the same worry with Rab, who's sickness started again, and now, after many X rays, it is said to be "spasms of the duodenum"...rather awful at his age... He - Moper - was livid, because I said Kit's thing must be inherited, and he swore in loud angry tones, like in old days "Why should my family be blamed for every bloody illness"!! But I can't help thinking "spasms" are in the Browning make-up. I do hope it does'nt mean Kits is going to start that nervous "inside" that has played havoc with Moper's life'. She continues 'Moper in very good heart, well... and so thrilled because Bim is getting him Veteran funds for new boatie. Anyway, it's keeping him happy...I can get on with my saga about the French glass-blowing forebears in the Revolution. It's going well'.'Moper' was Daphne's pet name for her husband Sir Frederick Browning. The book mentioned would become her non-fiction book "The Glass Blowers" (1963). If this is going to start I prefer the meek depression. Because it was drinking in elated mood that lead to the disaster of sixpence. I very much wonder if he started when he when to see Limpit last week in London, because had'nt when he left here. Daphne du Maurier: (1907 - 1989) British Author, T.L.S. 'Daphne', Menabilly par Cornwall, two page letter, to Maud Waddell ('Tod'), Daphne's governess and friend, on trying to teach her son Christian Browning to budget, 'I think Kits should do every week, is what all honks do, and when he is paid his weekly cheque he should at once cash it, and then hand over to you £3. £2 will be for his keep (though we know its actually more than that) and £1 towards the rent, which you will put in an envelope and save for me. That will leave him with £8 a week, and he must therefore cut his coat according to his cloth, and try and reckon out how he can keep going on this through the week. So much for petrol, so much for canteen lunches... When that is reckoned safely, he must see what he has over for cigarette, records, dolls, films, and so on. But the point is that a "working" boy must not expect to be able to gad about and spend money ad lib', Daphne ponders, 'I wonder how my family would have progressed if I had been they type to order mink coats, fast cars, and all the rest of it... Sometimes I think it would not be a bad idea if Labour did get in and take a great slice off everybody's Trust, and all three children realised what it meant to work and keep a family entirely on what one earns. But there it is. Its marrying and bringing up a family that takes the money. We'll see how Kits manages when he has a haggard "doll" wife in bal, nagging, and two nippers toddling, and his rent to pay, and a job coming to an end!(All rights are reserved by The Chichester Partnership and no written materials may be reproduced in part or in full without the express prior written permission of The Chichester Partnership c/o Curtis Brown Group Ltd)

'Daphne', Kilmarth Par Cornewall, 5th March 1975, two page letter, to Grace her housekeeper, 'Dearest Grace', 'I know you despise birthday cards, so many happy returns for Friday the 7th! If Tod in London has done my bidding and gone to Harrods, you should receive some time this week a small gift of a quarter bottle of champagne', Daphne continues 'one of the reasons I tend to do most of my shopping locally and in consequence have become really very fond of Par and the various people I hob-nob with in the shops, especially an old cobbler who might have stepped right out of a Dickens novel, with his counter piled high with old boots and shoes in various stages of repair - and said to me this morning, pulling a pair of ancient bootees I had given him to mend - "my lady, this is one of the proudest days in my life, that I could do this for you." Such old-world courtesy!', of her son Christian Browning out filming, 'when in Sicily he and his camera man had to be warned not to go off the main roads or the police could not be responsible. The Mafia.. the Mafia.. Kits warned me, and "if they kidnap me, they'll come to you for a ransom!", of her granddaughter Grace, 'she is now very active, and gets about with some sort of "walk aid" which sounds to me highly dangerous, barging into people all the time, and if her requests are not instantly met there is trouble. I add that she is rather greedy, and belches after every mouthful. I dont think that is a du Maurier trait!, finally she adds 'still ploughing away at my Bacon M.S. sequel to the first due in September, which will shake my publishers who long for a "romance".
