[em falta]; 20 cm.- E., Father Cardim SJ (1596-1659), Jesuit missionary, born in Viana do Alentejo, joined the Society of Jesus in 1611, having finished his studies in Goa. Cardim, one of the great travelers in the East, chronicler of the Society of Jesus in China and Japan and attorney general of the province of Japan, ended his days in Macau, aged 63, after having lived 15 years between China and the Japan. The text of the work (translated from Latin by the author himself, from the Rome edition of 1646) consists of 87 eulogies of Jesuit martyrs from Japan, accompanied by the respective representations of the martyrdoms, in 87 copperplate prints, printed separately (with blank verso); From page 261 until the end, there is the “Catalogo dos religiosos, e seculares, que nos Reynos do Iappão forão mostoe em odio de nossa fé...”, with its own title page but followed pagination. Incomplete copy, with the following missing: fold-out map of Japan (replaced by a reproduction), engraving nº 83 (martyrdom of Father Mastrilli) and four pages (Ss4, Tt1, Tt2 and Tt3, pages 327 to 334) of “ Catalogo dos mortos pela fé”; the six preliminary pages with some restorations and slight stains. Otherwise, a clean copy, with all the engravings very fresh and with good margins. [1848-1849].- 13 litografias; 26x34 cm.- E., Rare collection of eight views of Vila Nova de Gaia and four of Porto (plus a frontispiece), by Cesário Augusto Pinto de Araújo Cardoso de Mendonça (1825-1896). Complete set, consisting of the following non-coloured lithographs: album de doze vistas por Cesario Augusto Pinto (frontispício); I - Castello de S. João da Foz; II - A Cantareira; III - Sampaio (Caza do Snr. Anthero); IV - Gaya; V - Porto; VI - Villa Nova; VII - Serra do Pilar; VIII - Seminario; IX - Perspectiva do Seminario; X - O Freixo; XI - A Pedra Salgada; XII - Arnellas. All prints have the same subscription: C. A. Pinto del. —Lith. by J.C.V.Vª Nova Porto 1848 [the last one 1849]. Of particular note are the eight views of Vila Nova de Gaia, which historian António Conde considers “ o melhor e mais harmonioso e fidedigno conjunto que conhecemos de imagens antigas gaienses” (the best and most harmonious and reliable set of ancient images from Gaia that we know). Very clean set (no booklet covers), covered in a recent binding, full red morocco (signed Victor Santos), with engraving on the front cover and protective case. Not mentioned in the bibliographies consulted.

[1645].- [8], 1020 [i. e. 940], [12] p.; 22 cm.- E, Second edition of the first French translation of the famous book by Fernão Mendes Pinto (1510/14-1583), traveler and adventurer, born in Montemor-o-Velho, which was republished in Paris, once again, during the 17th century , in 1663 (the first edition was also published in Paris, in 1628). Fernão Mendes left for India in 1537, having stayed in the East for around 21 years. The “Pilgrimage”, a fantastic account of his troubled adventures, was originally published on the initiative of Fr. Belchior Faria, 31 years after his death (Lisbon, 1614), from the original manuscript bequeathed by the author to Casa Pia dos Penitentes. Copy lightly handled, slightly cropped (especially at the head) and with some browning; Cover page a little dusty. CALADO DO SALVADOR, Frei Manuel, O.S.P.- O | VALEROSO | LVCIDENO | E | TRIVMPHO | DA | LIBERDADE. | PRIMEIRA PARTE...- Em Lisboa: Por Paulo Craesbeeck, 1648.- [16], 356 p.; 28 cm.- E., Friar Manuel Calado († 1654), born in Vila Viçosa, barefoot hermit at the Convent of Serra de Ossa, lived for 30 years in Brazil. The only published part of a work that reports on the restoration of Pernambuco and the expulsion of the Dutch from Brazil. The edition was initially suppressed and prevented from being sold, even though it had all the licenses. Twenty years later the ban was lifted and work resumed, with the title page replaced and dated 1668. However, the work was registered in the Index from 1655 until the end of the 19th century. Copy with slight stains and light handling, especially on the preliminary pages (the last one restored); cover page mirrored and handled, with small touches by hand, on the imprint. Contemporary binding, full sheepskin, with small damage on the upper surface and traces of wormholes. Ex-libris d’Almeida e Brito. It is also an important 16th century Portuguese species, with an interesting xilo-typographic arrangement on the title page, of which there are two variants (see BN, 495/496). The present copy appears, however, to be a mix of both, as it has the last page numbered 295 and a single section c. Copy a little cropped and handled; old scratched ownership and small ink stain on title page; last page with rough restoration on the verso, slightly affecting the text (on the recto) and several inscriptions and scribbles on the verso. 17th century (?), full sheepskin binding, with some damage to the spine, but recoverable. Boaventura e Menezes.- Lisboa: Na Officina de Manoel da Sylva, 1749-1755.- 3 vols.: il.; 20 cm.- E., The Jesuit Jean Crasset (1618-1692), French theologian and ascetic writer, born in Dieppe, published his “Histoire de l’Église du Japon” in Paris, in 1689; although it was considered controversial, the work was soon translated and had three editions in the first half of the 18th century, in addition to the Portuguese one. The collection of the three volumes is as follows: I - [40], 642 p.: 1 unfolded map, 4 unfolded engravings; II - [12], 560 p.; III - [4], 643, [1 br.] p.: 1 unfolded engraving. The third volume was printed at Oficina de Miguel Soares. First and only Portuguese translation by D. Maria Antonia de S. Boaventura e Menezes (fl. 1750), illustrated with a fold-out map of Japan and four fold-out engravings in the first volume, another (martyrdom of missionaries) in the third, in facsimile in this copy; the second volume does not include any engravings. The map and engravings are by Michel Le Bouteux (Ernesto Soares, page 136 r sec.). Copy a little cropped, with some moisture stains (from the tide) on the first leaves of the three volumes, but overall clean.19th century bindings, with morocco spines (the first volume is almost detached from the body). Casanova e R. Lino.- Lisboa: Imprensa Nacional, 1903.- XII, 274 p.: il., 2 plantas desdobr., 5 estampas color.; 32 cm.- E., Luxurious silver filigree binding and snails set with cabochon-cut agates and two oval-cut synthetic spinels, agate globe, featuring on the back cover the inscription, gauffered in gold: Leitão & Irmão - Joalheiros da Coroa - Lisbon. It is, certainly, an offer from the prestigious goldsmiths and jewelers of Lisbon, to the newlyweds, on the occasion of the wedding of King D. Manuel II, with the German princess D. Augusta Victória of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, celebrated on the 13th of September 1913. The underlying binding is made of rigid parchment, on which a complex assembly of silver filigree was applied with large ornamental border stripes, made up of 20 quadrangular modules (45x45mm), with intricate plant motifs and relief brooches in the corners of both covers. In the central reserve of the front cover, a stylized representation of the Sintra Palace chimneys alongside a vase with flowers (bottom stripe with two faceted stones); below, the title of the work and the associated coats of arms of the Houses of Hohenzollern and Braganza, supported laterally on winged snakes. Surrounding the central reserve, a stripe with 20 moonstones in cabochons. In the center of the lower margin, an armillary glass sphere (on both covers). Central reserve of the posterior plane, not filled. Endpapers in watered silk, with an indication, on the top back cover, that the binding was restored in 1998 by the company Invicta Livro, from Porto. The copy of “O Paço de Cintra” belongs to the normal circulation and only retains the cover and upper brochure (without flaps). The volume is packed in a case, coated in blue velvet and lined with silk of the same colour, with a lock (missing the key).
