A Silver Perfume Atomiser of Cylindrical Form and Stamped for P&O Cruises, Birmingham Hallmark, 10cm Long

Lot 460

10th century AD. An elaborate Petersen Type L or O variant double-edged sword; the straight blade pattern-welded tapering from a width of about 5cm at the cross-guard; the point is still well preserved; both cutting edges show strong traces of employment on the battlefield with battle-nicks along their length; the tapered fullers, are 2cm at their origin adjacent to the cross-guard, and are still well preserved running from their largest width of 2.5cm to 1cm at the lower extreme end where they run to about 9cm of the point; the blade goes straight into the cross-guard with a broad and long tang, befitting such a fine blade; the boat-shaped cross is 5cm wide; its rounded ends are highly decorated with silver inlaid, onto which intricate whirling interlaced patterns are traced, and curve gently towards the blade; the massive pommel has a curved base-element and five lobes, decorated with the same silver inlaid patterns visible on the lower guard; the pommel knob, decorated in the same way, is attached to the pommel guard through rivets. See Petersen, J., De Norske Vikingesverd, Oslo, 1919; Oakeshott, R.E., The Archaeology of the weapons, London, 1960; Peirce, I.,Swords of the Viking Age, Suffolk, 2002; ?abi?ski, G., Viking Age Swords from Scotland, in Acta Militaria Mediaevalia III, Kraków, Sanok, 2007, pp.29-84; the sword finds parallels in various similar Viking age specimens of L variant; two very similar swords have been published by Peirce (2002, pp.77-81), both preserved at the British Museum; one of these is the famous Witham sword (Oakeshott, 1960, p.134); from the other side the combination of the curved guard with the five lobes seems to design an evolution of the pattern of variant O, like the sword of Oslo University (from Vestre Berg, Løiten parish, Akershus, Norway, see Peirce, 2002, pp.87ff.), or more evidently like the Gunnarsby (Rygge, Smaal) sword (Petersen, 1919, fig.105"). Petersen includes in the second group of O type eight swords exemplars, all having like our specimen, hilts covered in silver plates. 1.3 kg, 91cm (35 3/4").From a North West London collection; previously acquired in the 1980s; accompanied by an archaeological report of military specialist Dr. Raffaele D’Amato. Most probably our specimen is a river find, like most swords of this type. The most remarkable part of this sword is the magnificently decorated hilt, the result of fine craftsmanship. The very fine state of preservation suggests that this sword was protected by Glødeskall, a compound of iron and oxygen created when an iron object is subjected to intense heat, able to provide some protection against corrosion, by means of the shell (skall) or skin which the process forms around the object (Peirce, 2002, p.36, n.2"). The hilt of type O swords, especially their beautiful five-lobed pommels and cross-guards, were usually completely covered in a brilliant copper alloy or silver. The decoration of the guard is very similar to a sword of type O auctioned in 2013, and, owing to its lavish decoration, combining Roman and Norse elements, was said to belong to the Varangian Guard. Moreover also our specimen, like the one auctioned in 2013, has a pommel made of ferrous metal, rather than the copper alloy more commonly used for the hilts of type O. The only known type O Viking sword from Scotland is from Eriskay, generally dated to 900-950 AD, and has a pommel and a cross piece made of an iron core covered of bronze (?abi?ski, 2007, p.63"). This is typical of the swords of the second group O, in which the guards are made of iron with a cover of silver plates, exactly like our specimen. The silver plates are decorated with animal ornamentation and with a more ordinary twined band, like here, in a sword auctioned in 2013 and the Gunnarsby sword. Unlike the sword auctioned in 2013, the blade inlay is entirely typical for the proposed 10th century dating. The decoration is akin to the Hiberno-Norse style, which is the most commonly identified regional attribution of the Type O hilt group.Very fine condition.

Lot 585

Early 16th century AD. A substantial and important gold signet ring comprising a D-section hoop, facetted shoulders and octagonal bezel; the underside with cable detailing, the shoulders with three swept flutes, each with a band of cinquefoil and foliage ornament; the bezel with intaglio ropework border enclosing an olive branch set horizontally above a heater shield depicting thereon an enigmatic merchant's mark comprising a central cross with crescent ends to top and side limbs, with lateral spur to the foot; the cross flanked to left by the a crescent with six-pointed star below and a larger six-pointed star to right; the six-pointed star appears as a mintmark on the coins of Henry VIII of the York mint for the period 1514-1526 AD and the crescent also at York mint (and Durham) similarly for the period 1526-1529 AD. See Rylands, J. Paul Merchants' marks and other medieval personal marks in Transactions of the Historic Society of Lancashire and Cheshire, 1910 (copy of illustrations therefrom included); Boardman, J. & Scarisbrick, D. The Ralph Harari Collection of Finger Rings, London, 1977, item 167 for type; see de Ricci, Seymour, Catalogue of a Collection of Ancient Rings formed by the late E Guilhou, Paris, 1912 (reprinted"). 16.55 grams, 23.00mm overall, 18.03mm internal diameter (approximate size British O 1/2, USA 7 1/4, Europe 15.61, Japan 15) (1"). Found while searching with a metal detector in a private garden near Bridlington Priory, East Riding of Yorkshire, UK, by William Coultas on 15th March 2019; declared as Treasure under the Treasure Act 1996 with Treasure reference number 2019T326, subsequently disclaimed and returned to the finder after the local museum was found not to be in a position to acquire it; accompanied by copies of various documents pertaining to the find from the Treasure Registrar at the British Museum, and a copy of the Report to HM Coroner on the find by Adam Parker, plus a copy of the receipt from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport; also copies of the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) report [YORYM-5DBF7D], an original copy of The Searcher magazine with an article on it's finding, and a photograph of the ring taken when it was found.PublishedThe Garden of Dreams, by Will Coultas in The Searcher magazine, no.406, June 2019, p.30; and also mentioned on the front cover.Bridlington Priory was an Augustinian priory in the diocese of York, founded in 1113 AD and dissolved during the Reformation (Dissolution of the Monasteries"). The site of the priory is now occupied by a parish church dedicated to St. Mary. Walter de Gant was the founder of what was one of the earliest Augustinian establishments in England, a double-house with a convent, confirmed in charters by King Henry I. An Anglo-Saxon church and nunnery had occupied the site before the Norman invasion. The first prior may have been called 'Guicheman', a Norman corruption of the English name 'Wickeman'. The priory enjoyed royal favour and owned lands across Yorkshire. Its Canons established a separate foundation, Newburgh Priory, in 1145 AD and King Stephen granted it the right to confiscate the property of felons and fugitives within the town, alongside dues from the harbour. In 1200 AD, John granted leave to hold a yearly fair in the town. During the Anarchy, the Canons were expelled and the buildings fortified by William le Gros, who later awarded it six manors, one at Boynton and the rest in Holderness. Henry IV awarded the priory the rectory of Scarborough. A royal licence to crenelate was granted by Richard II in 1388 AD but it seems that only the Baylegate of the four known entrances was fortified. The priory also had an extensive library, documented by John Leland, the 16th century antiquary and poet, shortly before its Dissolution in 1538 AD. The priory was a very wealthy institution with extensive landholdings across northern England. The church itself was an impressive building some 390 ft (about 120 m) in length with carved interior woodwork by William Brownflete. The fabric of the priory was largely destroyed, with the nave remaining to form the frame of the existing parish church. Medieval and Tudor merchant's marks such as this example were a non statutory system for identifying personal property or to confirm identity, separate from the hereditary heraldry used by noble families. These marks were used on seals attached to goods for identification purposes or for sealing documents, and the designs were sometimes displayed on a heater shield (as on the present ring) in a more formal context. The cinquefoils are identified by Adam Parker, Finds Liaison Officer for N&E Yorkshire as carnations, also known as 'pinks' and signifying 'betrothal'. A similar merchant's mark appears on the reverse of a ring in the de Guilhou collection, which also features a comparable cable design to the hoop, for which a 16th century date is suggested in Boardman and Scarisbrick. This ring is of very good quality with exceptional workmanship evident to all of its features; it would undoubtedly have been the property of a wealthy and important merchant; merchant marks are enigmatic and secretive by their nature and often hold punning references to personal names so, for example, the presence of an olive branch could suggest the name Oliver. Some studies of such marks have been undertaken since the 19th century in a few localities and archives but, to date, there seems to have been no attempt to carry out a systemic national study of this fascinating subject nor to compile a corpus of examples from museum collections and public records. Very fine condition; traces of niello fill to the cinquefoils. Very rare.

Rogatiani et Donatiani,1859, p.323), the main kind of blade of the Roman third and fourth century soldier belongs to the so-called spatha type (Scriptores Historia Augusta, Divus Claudius, XXV, 7, 5; 8, 5) which derived directly from the long cutting Celtic sword of the La Tène III period, already used by the cavalrymen and Auxilia of the previous Ages. The great spatha (spathì) of the Roman heavy infantryman was considered by Julius Africanus (Fragm., I, 1, 53) as the main weapon of the armoured legionary of Alexander Severus. The frequent clashes with Germanic warriors armed with long swords and the increased recruitment by the Roman army lead to the growth of spatha use by the milites legionarii (DautovaRuševljan-Vujovi?, 2006, p.50"). These longer swords slowly replaced the shorter gladius, the double-edged sword of the imperial infantry, for all troops. Vegetius (Epitome de re military, II,15) calls the spatha a gladius maior, i.e. a great sword, sometimes a metre long. A wide range of spathae have been found dating from the late second to the late fourth century AD (D’Amato, 2019, p.14"). There are today several hundred attested Roman longswords scattered throughout Europe. Specimens of Roman spathae of the second and third centuries have been found in large numbers in the Danish bogs (Nydam, Straubing, Thorsberg, Illerup"). These swords show a great deal of variability, in terms of shape and dimensions; today a typological framework is well-established, thanks to the work of academics including Ulbert, Biborski and Miks. This particular type is the Lauriacum-Hromówka of which more than 30 specimens have been found in Poland.Fine condition. Scarce.

Manner of O.van Schriek ( -) FLORAL STILL LIFE signed O. van Schriek oil on canvas 46cm by 42,5cm MASTERING THE ART OF COPYING “Good artists copy; great artists steal” Pablo Picasso.*For at least two millennia artists have copied the work of their peers. The Romans copied Greek art, sculpture and design in acts of honour and appropriation that came to shape their own particular artistic traditions.More recently, aspiring artists in Europe, Asia and Africa have paid tribute to their forbears and teachers by copying their work. Across space and through time, emulating or copying has been regarded as not only paying homage, but as an important way of transferring knowledge. Received wisdom is modified and hopefully improved through generations in this manner. From the middle ages, artist’s workshops and studios employed young apprentices, contracted under a system of guilds. Trained to assist with studio duties, they were also taught to copy their master’s work in order to explore and understand technique and subject ensuring continuity of current artistic traditions. Art theory was introduced later with the establishment of academies in Italy in the 1600’s, when the intellectual stimulation of copying great works of art was accepted as critically important to the development of artistic competence. Literally hundreds of thousands of works were produced “after” master artists in workshops and ateliers during the Renaissance and beyond. During the Golden Age in the Netherlands, there was a frenzy of ownership and a cult-like prestige among the new wealthy class in their scramble to acquire genre paintings for display in both domestic and public settings. Still lifes, landscapes and portraits evoked the image of an aspirant life of comfort, success and adventure. An example of one of these still lifes is Floral Still Life which has been produced in the manner of O. van Schriek. In 2017, Sotheby’s London was the first to devote an entire sale to Old Master Copies as a point of entry for emerging collectors. - C.K.1 - Colin Gleadell.Sotheby’s explores the market for Old Master copies. 16 October 2017.https:www.telegraph.co uk/luxury/art/sothebys-exploresmarket-oldmaster-copies * Picasso’s advice to clever artists was to do as he did - Steal with credit, respect, and transformative new ideas
