A Late George IV/Victorian solid satin birch circular centre library table, the top with moulded edge above four scrolling outswept supports, on castors, the underside of the top and one leg stamped 'VR, O, COBURG COTTAGE, MARCH, 1873', 72cm high, the top 132cm diameter Provenance; Christie's London, lot 189, June 15, 2000. The stamp relates to The Royal Estate of Osborne, in East Cowes, Isle of Wight. Coburg Cottage was built by H. R. H. Prince Albert for Queen Victoria as a birthday present in 1852. Christie's footnote detailed the history that this table was "almost certainly supplied to King George IV, and by descent to George VI, by whom given to the vendor's father, a landscape gardener at Royal Lodge Windsor, to replace furniture lost when his house was destroyed by bombing in 1940".Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Some old chips and splits. Some fading. Evidence of old worm. Some additional dark scratches to the top. The legs with the expected additional knocks and scuffs from use. WW1/Interwar Liverpool Scottish Tam O Shanter khaki, woollen, large crown, body and lower band with khaki braid bow. The crown with khaki green pom pom. White metal, Liverpool Scottish badge on a tartan backing. Dark green, quilted cotton lining with faint owner’s name “1st Batt KLS”. Minor wear.
Pair of 1937 Pattern Battle Dress Trousers khaki, woollen, wide leg trousers. Left leg with large pocket. Top flap secured by hidden button. Right hip with first aid pocket. Side slash pockets. Hidden seat pocket with buttoned flap. Waist belt loops buttoned to the top. Flat, brass buttons. Internal WD stamp “O”. Some repairs and minor moth.

A pair of Quaker samplers by Martha Harrison, early 18th century, worked in coloured silks on a black wool ground, in a variety of stitches, including cross stitch, tent stitch, and Algerian eye stitch, one depicting flowers and animals (a hare, a horned cow, 3 dogs), and the other depicting a pyramidal fruit tree surrounded by other stylised trees and flowers, and 4 birds, each approximately 18.5 x 13 cm (7.25 x 5 ins), matching frames, first item with paper label on verso inscribed in brown ink: 'Given to E. Ward's mother by a Quaker Martha Harrison, A O SIMS from Eliza Ward about the 8th October 1902, they are about 200 years old', together with 2 other embroidery pictures: a 19th century floral picture in petit point using silks, 15 x 13 cm (6 x 5 ins), framed and glazed; and an early 20th century still life picture of a lobster, dead fowl, and fruit, in gros point using wool, 18 x 26 cm (7 x 10.25 ins), framed and glazedQty: (4)
ROYAL DOULTON; seven figures comprising HN14393 'The Potter', 'The Balloon Seller', 'Autumn Breezes' (af), 'The Ermine Coat', 'Top o' the Hill' (af), 'Autumn' (af) and 'Penelope' (af) (7). Additional Information'The Potter' with glue residue to base, although no visible damage. 'Autumn Breezes' cracked to head and hat. 'Top o' the Hill' head has been off, crudely repaired and further cracks and damage. 'Penelope' cracked to lower section. 'Autumn' cracked in numerous places through the base. 'Balloon Seller' and 'Ermine Coat' appear OK, all with general wear, dust and dirt.

Portrait of Mr H O Backhouse, Master of Hounds, on a bay hunter, with his pack of hounds oil on canvas 100 x 126 cmFootnote: Provenance: By descent within the family of the sitter Literature: Wellington Journal and Shrewsbury News, 29th October 1881, p. 7 The presentation of this portrait to Mr H O Backhouse on 21st October 1881 was an important local event, which was celebrated by a dinner held at the Rose & Crown Hotel, Burford, with more than 160 gentlemen present. It was captured in vivid detail in the local newspaper the following week - on 29th October 1881. The portrait depicts Mr Backhouse, the master of the harriers in the Tenbury district, mounted on his favourite hunter, ‘Tommy’, surrounded by three couples of hounds and a terrier. The hounds represented are Countess, Beauty, Glory, Cheerful, Jester and Little Sam. The landscape behind the sitter depicts local scenery introducing a small portion of the Clee Hill. The painting is reported in the local newspapers to have come out of the studio of 'Mr Laing, Castle St, Shrewsbury', who is recorded as a photographer active in Shrewsbury in the 1880s.Condition report: Oil on canvas which is unlined. There are some slight undulations in the corners of the canvas but overall the picture has good tension and is in plane. The paint layer has localised areas of flaking with small scattered losses. There is an uneven surface texture in the thinner paint passages as well as drying cracks, mainly located around the hounds. The varnish has yellowed and is unevenly applied with localised glossy patches. There is a thick layer of surface dirt present. The moulding on the frame has suffered losses.

Volume two has signatures O1-2 in their uncancelled first state and page 210 consequently with ten lines only; Rothschild describes such copies as first issue. According to Reed there were 750 copies of volume one, and 1,000 of volume two.
