For long a ceremonial corps the Gentlemen now parade for the state opening of parliament, coronations, the Garter service and other state occasions. All the documents are signed by Theophilus Howard, Lord Howard de Walden, later second Earl of Suffolk (1584-1640), of Audley End, Essex and Suffolk House, The Strand, Westminster; captain of the Gentlemen Pensioners.
