large format gelatin silver prints, the Imperial Cycling Club Belfast 1900; Hadfield Sheffield massive artillery shell c. 1914-18; two large photographs of police forces, one by Thomas J Kerslake of Weston-Super-Mare; RMS Persia with passenger signatures, this one alone in good condition, faint photographer's wetstamp verso for F C Gould & Son, Harmer St Gravesend. Note: RMS Persia was a P&O liner launched in 1900. It was torpedoed and sunk without warning on 30 December 1915 while the passengers were having lunch, by German U-boat U-38. The ship sank in five to ten minutes, killing 343 of the 519 aboard. At the time of sinking, Persia was carrying a large quantity of gold and jewels belonging to the Maharaja Jagatjit Singh, though he himself had disembarked at Marseilles. Among the passengers to survive were Walter E. Smith, a British Member of Parliament, Colonel Charles Clive Bigham, son of Lord Mersey, 2nd Lieutenant John Lionell Miller-Hallett of the Gurkha Rifles, and John Douglas-Scott-Montagu, 2nd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu. His secretary (and mistress) Eleanor Thornton, who many believe was the model for the Rolls-Royce "Spirit of Ecstasy" mascot by Charles Sykes, died.
