UNIQUE COPY: Rowlandson, Thomas; Combe (Wm.): The English Dance of Death, 2 volumes. R Ackermann, 1815-16, 1st. Edns. With 70 inimitable coloured plates by Rowlandson, brilliant impressions. Interleaved set with manuscript translation into French, of the two title pages, advert leaf and the description of the subject of each coloured plate, throughout the two volumes. Royal 8vo. Cont. French binding of full red leather with gilt tooling and lettering to spines, wholly uncut. [Although the bindings do not bear any crest or armorial, this copy was originally in the library of Marie Louise (1791-1847) wife of Napoleon Bonaparte. On the abdication of the emperor in 1814 she retired to Vienna and in 1816 the allied powers gave her the duchy of Parma. No doubt the French description of the plates were written at her request, or perhaps a translation of the whole was contemplated but not proceeded with]. Sotheby's, with full details and history of the work. (2)Condition ReportPlease see image of letter regarding provenance.
