Diana Stanley (1909-1975) Brown watercolour ( almost sepia), a pair ? Packhorse Bridge in Dorset ? A three arched stone bridge across a river ( it is thought these are illustrations from Bridges by M Cockett, 1963) Both signed lower right , one titled lower left The largest 6 7/8 x 9 3/4 in. ( 17.1 x 24.6 cm) The Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators, page 397 Stanley, Diana Born on 18 th February 1909 in London, Stanley was educated at Cheltenham Ladies College, studied at the Regent Street Polytechnic and the Byam Shaw School of Drawing ad Painting (1929-34). She painted murals while still a student, then worked as an engineering draughtsman in London. She taught at Byam shaw (1934-38, 1946-48) but gave up teaching to write Anatomy for Artists (1951). She suffered an injury to her right arm during an air raid, and had to draw with her left hand for a while; she exhibited works done in that way after WW2 at the Batsford Gallery. Her injury made it impossible for her to produce etchings or engravings, and she concentrated on painting. As an illustrator, she is bestknown for her pen drawings for The Borrowers Books illustrated include: Matilda and the Chickens (R. Henry 1950), The Borrowers ( M.Norton 1952), Alice in Wonderland ( L Carroll 1954), The Borrowers Afield (1955), The Borrowers Afloat (1959), The Borrowers Aloft (1961), M. COCKETT: BRIDGES (O & B 1963, Ash Dry, Ash Green (1966) Poor Stainless ( 1971)?.
