Portrait of D. Afonso Furtado de Mendonça - c. 1561-1630 - Rector of the University of Coimbra (1597), Bishop of Guarda, Bishop of Coimbra - Count of Arganil, Archbishop of Braga and Archbishop of Lisbon, oil on canvas, with inscription P[AR]A O ILL[USTRÍSSI]MO S[ENH]OR D. AFFONSO FURTADO DE MENDO[N]SA ARCEB[ISP]O DE L[ISBO]A A 1597 [D.Afonso Furtado de Mendonça was the son of Jorge Furtado de Mendonça, Commander of entries, and Dona Mécia Henriques], Portuguese school, 18th C. (1st quarter), minor faults on canvas, minor faults on the pictorial layer. Notes: "Two unpublished portraits from the Archbishops Gallery of the Palace of Mitra Nuno Saldanha This is an extremely interesting pair of portraits that were part of the primitive Archbishops series, of which only the seven paintings currently found in the Patriarchate were known to date. from Lisbon, in S. Vicente de Fora. The original set of thirteen portraits of the Archbishops of Lisbon, were placed by the first Patriarch, Dom Tomás de Almeida, in the former Palace of Mitra, arranged in two rooms, on the occasion of the renovation that was carried out there. There is no doubt about the original location, as the canvases are described and referred to from 1763, by Batista de Castro, to 1827, by Joaquim José Ferreira, in the inventory of Paço de Marvilla: "Segunda Casa – Sinco Painéis de oito palmos de Largo e seis de Alto molduras pretas pintadas em panno dos Retractos dos Arcebispos de Lisboa [...] Terceira Casa – oito painéis de oito palmos de Largo e seis de Alto Molduras pretas e Pintura em panno dos Retratos dos Arcebispos de Lisboa e achando nelles o Cardeal Regidore, Cardeais Infantes". The list of portraits was as follows (in chronological order, from the eighth to the twentieth centuries): Cardinal D. Jorge da Costa (1464-1500) Martinho da Costa (1500-1521) Cardinal Infante D. Afonso of Portugal (1523-1540) Fernando de Menezes Coutinho e Vasconcelos (1540-1564) Cardinal Infante D. Henrique of Portugal (1564-1570) Jorge de Almeida (1570-1585) Miguel de Castro (1586-1625) Afonso Furtado de Mendonça (1626-1630) João Manuel de Ataíde (1633) Rodrigo da Cunha (1635-1643) António de Mendonça (1670-1675) Luís de Sousa (1675-1702) João de Sousa (1703-1710) From 1905 onwards, we have news of its placement in the Patriarchal Relation, according to the report by Monsignor Alfredo Elviro dos Santos, regarding the existing collection there, in a letter to Diário de Notícias newspaper dated October 4th of that year. However, the transfer of paintings from Marvila to S. Vicente was not done directly. The set went through several vicissitudes, being sold several times, and in parts, dispersing among different owners. We know that four of these portraits were acquired by engineer Jorge Lobo d'Ávila da Graça, in the early 20th century, to decorate the Galvão-Mexia/Pimenta palace, in Campo Grande, which he had bought in 1914. Years later, in 1957, when he decides to leave that house of his, they return to auction, at the great auction he held for its contents, in November of that year. Two of them would join the rest, in S. Vicente, that of Cardinal Infante D. Henrique, and that of Cardinal Infante D. Afonso (acquired in 2010). ) The remaining two, from the Jorge Graça collection, are precisely those for sale, that of D. Afonso Furtado de Mendonça (Rector of the University of Coimbra, Bishop of Guarda, Bishop of Coimbra - Count of Arganil, Archbishop of Braga and Archbishop of Lisbon), and that of D. João Manoel (Bishop of Viseu, Bishop of Coimbra-Count of Arganil, Archbishop of Lisbon and Viceroy of Portugal), respectively, the fifteenth and sixteenth archbishops of Lisbon, still in its black frames, referred to in 1827. We do not know the author of the original series, probably executed after 1710, the date of the death of the last archbishop figured there, D. João de Sousa. However, it is due to the important painter Vieira Lusitano (1699-1783), a considerable renovation of part of it, por ordem do Senhor Rey D. João V", as Batista de Castro refers (Castro, 1763: 481). In addition to the additions, especially accessories and sets, we do not neglect the eventual execution of a significant part of some of them, given the stylistic affinities, as well as the elaborate symbolic compositions, so much to Vieira's taste. This series should also be part of this series, although it is not an archbishop, a portrait of Dom Tomás de Almeida himself, of which there is still a drawing of the Lusitano in blood, at the National Museum of Ancient Art, with the same proportions and type of attributes , which we find in the portraits of the archbishops." The document is part of the extension of the Pombaline reform of the University of Coimbra, already in the reign of Queen D. Maria I of Portugal, whose reformer was its dean, D. Francisco de Lemos de Faria Pereira Coutinho (1735-1822), a native of Marapicu ( Rio de Janeiro), then titular bishop of Zenópolis and future bishop of Coimbra (1779-1822). Fully red shagreen contemporary binding, a little worn, but recoverable, with traces of wormholes on the spine; multiple gold ornamental borders on the covers, florets on the corners of the central reserve and panels gold closed on the spine; leaves with gauffered and gilt edges; keeps the original marbled paper endpapers. The sumptuousness of the binding, combined with the care of the calligrapher, could indicate that the volume was intended for a high-ranking personality of the court, the Church or the University itself.

CARAMUEL LOBKOWITZ, Juan, O. Cist.- EXCELLENTISSIMA | DOMVS DE MELLO | AD IMPERATORIBVS | ROMANIS, CONSTANTINOPOLITANIS, | HISPANIS, FRANCIS, | SAXONIBVS, FRANCONIBVS, | SVEVIS, BAVARIS, | AVSTRIACIS; | A REGIBVS | CASTELLANIS, LEGIONENSIBVS | LVSITANIS, ALGARBICIS, | [...] | COMPOSITA; | Stylo Ioannis Caramuel Lobkovvitz.- Lovanii: Apud Everardvm De Witte Anno M DC XLIII, [1643].- [3], XLIII (i. é 44) f.: il.; 43 cm.- E., Monumental edition, of great graphic complexity, dedicated to D. Francisco de Mello (ca. 1575-ca. 1652), Huntmaster of the Kingdom, ambassador to France and governor of the Algarve, one of the forty noblemen who participated in the conspiracy that would come to evolve into the 1640 revolution. The edition, without the conventional title page, consists of a sheet with the title abbreviation in large calligraphed characters: EXCELMA Domus de MELLO, three chapter separators, eight typographic sheets and 34 family trees copperplate printed (with typographed text ), which seek to demonstrate the direct descent of the Mellos from Charlemagne to the Dukes of Parma. The copy was washed and treated, showing the following most significant imperfections: reconstitution of the lower margin of the first three leaves (without affecting the text); excessive trimming with loss of the last letter of the word MELLo (handwritten) on the first sheet and on two other separators; deep restorations on the outer margin of the last engraving and the last sheet (65x50 mm), with loss of seven lines of text. Recent full sheepskin binding (with a protective case), with gold ornamental borders on the covers, seven gold closed panels on the spine, patina in the manner of the period and a golden roulette on the squares. D. António Caetano de Sousa (História genealógoca, I, p. CCXV) has not seen any copy, as well as Manuel Bernardes Branco (Portugal e os estrangeiros, IV, p. 540), Azevedo Soares (Bibliographia nobiliarchica, 1975) or perhaps even Palau (43547). Edition not mentioned on the Portuguese catalogues usually consulted.

Inocêncio only mentions 24 preliminary pages, but the copy includes an unusual page with a "Catalogo dos livros, e relações manuscritas, em que se achaõ algumas memorias do estado do Maranhão", a true reference bibliography, added at the end of the third section (preliminary page). d) and before the beginning of the text. Small handwritten ownership, from the period, on the title page; slight central stain on the last eight leaves. For the rest, a very clean copy, keeping wide margins. Full sheepskin contemporary binding with slightly worn spine, retaining the original endpapers, with a bookseller's cutout glued to the back cover (first flyleaf loose). Inocêncio, I, p. 382. Samodães, 2396. Reiss & Auvermann, 1025. Borba de Moraes also only mentions 12 preliminary pages (Bibliographia brasiliana), I, p. 89: "This first edition is rare and much searched for since it is a classic on Maranhão".

The set includes not only the period immediately after the earthquake of November 1, 1755, but also the first seven years of the Court's stay in Rio de Janeiro, although all the diplomas were apparently printed in Lisbon. The nine volumes, slightly trimmed, are exceptionally clean and maintain good margins. Volume I with a manuscript, from the time, on the title page (Serpa?); volume IX has 28 leaves with the lower outside corners cut, without ever affecting the text; very few traces of worm work, confined to the endpapers of three volumes and no more than six leaves (in more than 6,000) of so many other diplomas contiguous to the endpapers (negligible and marginal traces). From the author's biography (16th century), Franciscan from the Algarve province, we only know that he traveled throughout Europe, especially in Italy, and lived for almost three years in the Holy Land, having passed through Trento at the time of the third phase of the Council. O "Itinerário" is an account of his troubled pilgrimage, led by Friar Bonifácio of Ragusa, in which about 60 priests took part. The title page presents, in the centre, the coat of arms of D. Miguel de Castro, Archbishop of Lisbon; the next three pages, framed by xylographic frames, include the royal charter, the dedication to D. Miguel and a message to devotees looking forward to visiting the Holy Land. The text of the trip is developed in the following 301 sheets, after which there is a "tavoada" in three sheets, with identical frames, ending with a small engraving of Death; there follows the index, which occupies three sheets and presents, at the end, an engraving with the coat of arms of Portugal; in front of the last sheet, the errata, framed by two xylographic elements: "Erros deste lilvro"; on the back, another full page engraving with the coat of arms of Portugal. Complete copy, slightly trimmed (carmine edges), with light handling; restoration on the lower outer corners of the first 16 and last 14 sheets; some sections appear to have been washed, namely those that have been restored. The copy belonged to Prof. Freiras Simões (ex-libris on the back cover and stamp on the flyleaf). Full burgundy morocco 20th century binding with gold ornamental borders on the covers and panels closed on the spine (with some wormholes); rolls on the squares and traced in gold on the thickness of the covers. M. D. XCIIII. [1594].- [4], 206 f.; 18 cm.- E., Jerónimo Corte-Real (ca. 1533-1588), poet and painter of Renaissance humanism, born in Lisbon, whose most famous work, "Sucesso do segundo cerco de Diu" (Lisbon, 1574), was dedicated to King D. Sebastião. First edition of a tragic poem in seventeen cantos, considered by many to be the most beautiful in the Portuguese language, after "Os Lusíadas". The paper is light weight, so some sections are a little fragile. Copy trimmed with tangential loss of some signatures and claims. Other imperfections: marginal restoration on leaves 25 and 26 (D1 and D2); leaf 46 (F6) with central damage slightly affecting the text; lower margins of last 12 jagged leaves; slight browning and occasional tidal stains. It is, however, complete and solid, requiring intervention. Heraldic ex-libris of Pedro de Carvalho Burnay. Bookstore label of João Pereira da Silva & Filho (back cover). 19th/20th century full sheepskin binding with blind stamped on the covers and gold tooling on the spine (with two minor damages). The Convent of the Blessed Sacrament of Our Lady of Luz, from Montemor-o-Novo, was erected in 1760 next to the Church with the same name, built in 1582, which, in turn, gave its name to the fair held in this location since the 16th century, at the beginning of September: Fair of Luz. In 1878, the Convent was abolished, and the building housed the Holy Spirit Hospital, which is still installed there today. Apparently, the constitutions of the nuns of Louriçal were adopted by those of Montemor-o-Novo without any modification. Volume with slight acidity, but very clean, with the first notebook loose. Nineteenth-century binding, entirely made of sheepskin, with blind tooling decoration on the covers, squares and spine; carmine edges.
CONIMBRICENSES.- COMMENTARII | COLLEGII CO- | NIMBRICENSIS | SOCIETATIS | IESV, | In tres libros de Anima, Aristotelis Stagiritæ. | [gravura xilográfica com o trigrama da Companhia de Jesus].- Conimbricæ: Typis & expensis Antonij á Mariz, 1598.- [4], 558, [2 br., 26] p.; 23 cm.- E., Seventh and penultimate original edition, from a total of eight editorial initiatives, with comments on the works of Aristotle, published by the Society of Jesus in Coimbra (4) and in Lisbon (4), usually designated by Conimbricenses and destined for the Philosophy course at the Arts College of Coimbra, in charge of the Jesuits since 1555. The person responsible for this volume, which contains the commentaries on the three books of Aristotle's Treatise on the Soul, was Father Manuel de Góis SJ (1543-1597), born in Portel, a leading figure in the golden period of Jesuit teaching in Coimbra. The editions were enormously successful, having often been reissued in Venice, Lyon, Cologne, Hamburg and Mainz and remaining as manuals for Jesuit colleges until the mid-eighteenth century. Copy slightly trimmed, but very clean (possibly washed), of recent full rigid parchment binding, with ties and gold tooling, to the taste of the time, on the covers and spine. Anselmo, 916.
