Lot 256

Supplied new by Henlys in late 1934, this well-travelled SS1 is fresh from long-term ownership and appears to only need some light recommissioning.Forerunner of the 'Jaguar' marque, 'SS' originally stood for the Swallow Sidecar & Coachbuilding Company, which had been founded in Blackpool, England by William Walmsley in 1922. The company branched out into motor manufacture in 1926, its first major success being an attractive sports saloon on the Austin Seven chassis. The design was the work of Walmsley's business partner, William Lyons, whose future Jaguar creations would confirm his reputation as one of the British motor industry's most gifted stylists. The SS1, launched in 1932, is a close-coupled coupé based on the Standard Ensign 16hp. The chassis and body were designed by Lyons; a long bonnet, tiny passenger compartment and helmet-type front wings imply the ultimate in high performance of the time and this is what ultimately created a blueprint for Jaguars of the future, combining sporting good looks with a better-than-average specification. Indeed, so successful was Lyons' new venture that production of Swallow-bodied cars ceased altogether in 1933, and SS Cars Limited was formed, initially as a subsidiary of the Swallow sidecar-building business. For 1934 the SS1 gained a new wide-track chassis and slightly enlarged Standard engines of 2,143cc and 2,663cc, while the body - now available in four different configurations - underwent yet another restyle. In this, its final form, the SS1 remained in production until 1936, by which time 2,503 examples of this ultimate version had been made. The final assembly of this Swallow Sports One (SS1) Tourer on to its Standard Motor Company rolling chassis (#245816) was completed on the 17th December 1934 and, as a late 1934 Model, it benefited from a wider track and a synchromesh gearbox. Finished in Birch Grey with a green interior and a green soft top and powered by a 2,663cc 68bhp straight-six. It was despatched to Henlys, registered MG 3624 and onward to a, rather proud we imagine, Mr L Garton of Surrey.Within the history file there is a ‘Buff’ logbook which lists a further four owners, the last one being a Mr Michael Roberts of Huddersfield, who appears to have written a running commentary on the maintenance of the car from 1981 until 1985. The car at this point was painted red, so presumably had been refinished between 1934 and his purchase. There appears to be a small gap in the car’s history until 1994/5 when it was exported to Germany when its keeper is listed as Herr Frederick Rausch of Langscheid. There is a raft of invoices for works completed between then and c.2008 along with some photographs detailing what looks like an engine rebuild. At this point the car carried the registration plate MK 06333. The SS then returned to the UK and joined a large private Collection, where it remained until recently. We are unsure of exactly when the car’s current silver and silver grey two-tone finish was applied, but it still presents well today. The odometer is reading 8,692 miles which we assume is 108,692 but can’t warrant. The lovely period interior is trimmed in Burgundy Leather with Art Deco ‘sunburst’ door cards and sports its original steering wheel and dashboard including the combined 100mph speedometer and 5,000rpm tach. Externally, the car is just what you would hope to find with decent silver/silver grey paintwork, running boards, chrome wire wheels wrapped in Firestone ‘whitewall’ tyres, a fold-down windscreen, big Lucas 165 headlamps and a chrome badge bar with an early AA badge. The SS is supplied with a large A4 history file containing details of previous keepers, old MOTs etc. and, as mentioned earlier, a lot of information from Herr Rausch during his ownership. Having been in storage for several years, the car will require a certain amount of recommissioning and we invite and encourage interested parties to view this lovely 1930s Tourer and form their own opinion.SpecificationMake: SWALLOWModel: SS1Year: 1934Chassis Number: 248516Registration Number: MG 3624Transmission: ManualEngine Number: 248501Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 8692 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Burgundy LeatherClick here for more details and images

Lot 268

Vauxhall's baby touring car of the 1920s range, this exciting project 14-40 is ripe for restoration.Prior to 1925, when Vauxhall was taken over by General Motors, the company was renowned for producing handsome, finely engineered cars that put it on a par with Bentley or Sunbeam. Laurence Pomeroy's tenure as Chief Engineer saw the firm produce some of the truly outstanding designs of the Edwardian period, commencing with the 20hp Prince Henry in 1910. A larger (4.0-litre) version of the Prince Henry's four-cylinder side-valve engine was developed for its successor, the D-Type, which is perhaps best remembered for its role as a WWI military staff car. With the return of peacetime production at the end of The Great War, the D-Type's successor, the 30-98, proved itself to be one of the greatest of all fast tourers, and in 1922 Vauxhall matched its great rival - the Sunbeam company of Wolverhampton - in offering an alternative, smaller and less expensive car - the 2.3-litre 14-40hp M-Type. The latter featured a four-cylinder detachable-head engine, 3-speed in-unit gearbox, a single-plate clutch, and rear brakes only. It sold for around £750 against some £1,600 for the 30-98.The second generation of the M-series, as we have here today, benefits from a redesigned cylinder head, by Ricardo giving extra compression, a 4-speed gearbox and four-wheel brakes.#M922 was delivered new by Vauxhall and fitted with four-seater Princeton tourer Coachwork. It's believed to have been registered in Staffordshire when new and remained in the ownership of one family, father, son and brother, from 1924-2000. Our vendor, a retired mechanical engineer, first saw the 14-40 when he was 15 years of age in 1960 and was obviously fascinated by it, so when the third-generation of family ownership passed away in 2000, he was able to purchase it from the original family owner's widow. The Vauxhall retains its original chassis, engine, gearbox, axles, coachwork etc. and is in remarkably solid condition having been off the road since approximately 1985 in dry storage. After his purchase, an engine strip-down was started but never completed. In fact, the whole restoration  project was never really started and #M922 returned to garage storage until recently. The engine crankcase remains in the car, with the head and block separate, but included along with valves, springs, guides, shells etc. The car steers, brakes (rear only as fronts are void of shoes) and has good suspension. Cycle wings have been fitted to the rear at some time in replacement for Vauxhall's long flowing type. The car still has its original instruments plus others, and column controls which often go missing over the years. This fantastic project would make a superb VSCC rally car or even trials machine. There is a ready supply of 14-40 parts available and, once the engine is rebuilt, the car could be used in ‘oily rag’ condition or would be a great basis for a full restoration. A V5C registration document has been applied for by the vendor, and is hoped to be completed my time of sale - otherwise it will follow post sale.SpecificationMake: VAUXHALLModel: 14/40 TOURERYear: 1924Chassis Number: M922Registration Number: TBATransmission: ManualEngine Number: M922 Drive Side: Right-hand DriveMake: RHDInterior Colour: BrownClick here for more details and images

1971 Range Rover Suffix A Transmission: manualMileage:52752Although now responsible for a whole lifestyle movement, the Range Rover had more humble beginnings. The first-generation Range Rover was introduced in 1970 and was not designed as a luxury 4x4; whilst certainly up-market compared to preceding Land Rover models, the early Range Rovers had fairly basic, utilitarian interiors with vinyl seats and plastic dashboards that were designed to be washed down with a hose. Convenience features such as power assisted steering, carpeted floors, air conditioning, cloth or leather seats and wooden interior trim were fitted later in the production run or as options. Marketed as 'A Car For All Reasons', the Range Rover was more capable off-road than the Land Rover but was much more comfortable, offering a top speed in excess of 100mph.First registered on 1st July 1971, the Range Rover offered here is what can only be described as the holy grail of early Range Rovers. The supplied British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate shows this home market Tuscan Blue 'Suffix A' example was dispatched on 21st June 1971 to the Henley Limited dealers in London. With only four former keepers, this legendary vehicle shows a wonderful patina, whilst also showing off how original it is. Having covered only 52,752 miles, it clearly led a fairly pampered life. The body is exceptionally rust free, with all the usual trouble spots showing no signs of corrosion and in fact, in many places, paint that would polish up to a gloss. Tell-tale plastic bungs reveal the car has most likely been Ziebarted which may go some way to account for the body's incredibly condition. All the details are correct, from the drop-down rear number plate, to the screw-off fuel filler. Inside the car doesn't disappoint either, it is all complete including the centre console 'Palomino' vinyl covering, along with the footwells, roof and door cards all present. Having formed part of two major collections over the past twenty years, it has been dry stored and always maintained in running order. A thorough, but sympathetic mechanical recommissioning was completed in 2002 and the vendor reports the car to run and drive very well to this day.Supplied with a V5C registration document, BMIHT certificate, 2015 Land Rover Monthly magazine article, recommissioning parts list, workshop repair manual and promotional catalogues. Impossible to replicate, this may be the most original Range Rover in existence and a vehicle for the true connoisseur.

1970 Jaguar E-Type Series II Roadster Transmission: manualMileage:89260There is little doubt that the advent of Jaguar's E-Type revolutionised the motoring world and sent the press into raptures, the penmanship that created such exquisite lines was truly gifted. The Museum of Modern Art recognised the significance of the Jaguar E-Type's design in 1996 by adding a blue roadster to its permanent design collection, one of only two cars to receive the distinction. This three-dimensional beauty, however, was complemented by a fabulous double-overhead cam, six-cylinder engine that powered this lithe, taut creature comfortably over the 100mph mark. Jaguar, rightly, were not content to sit upon their laurels however and continue to develop the E-Type with the first substantial improvements arriving in 1964 with a newly enlarged 4.2-litre powerplant increasing torque and improving driveability. In 1968 open headlights without glass covers, a wrap-around rear bumper, re-positioned and larger front indicators and taillights below the bumpers, better cooling aided by an enlarged 'mouth' and twin electric fans together with uprated brakes are all hallmarks of Series II cars. The engine is easily identified visually by the change from smooth polished cam covers to a more industrial 'ribbed' appearance. The interior and dashboard were also redesigned with rocker switches being substituted for toggle switches. The dashboard switches also lost their symmetrical layout. This very good Series II Jaguar E-Type roadster has been in long term ownership with the last owner buying the car in January 1988. According to the letter attached to the sales agreement the previous owner purchased the Jaguar in 1976 with a recorded mileage of 38,000 miles and it was fitted with a new bonnet and repainted. The letter also states that in 1980 the rear suspension, brakes and differential were overhauled, in 1984 the cylinder head and gearbox were rebuilt and in the summer of 1987 the car was completely repainted, and a new rear bumper fitted. Supplied with the car is a file of invoices and which shows that it was re-trimmed in 2007 and major engine work was carried out by marque specialists Thomas Barclay Ltd in 2013. Shortly after it was MoT'd in August 2014 the car was placed into dry storage where it has remained until very recently. At the time of being catalogued the Jaguar has been checked through and the engine started. This very good 1970 Jaguar E-Type roadster is finished in Old English White with dark blue leather and matching dark blue cloth hood. The car is supplied with a V5C registration document and a file containing past invoices, old registration documents and some old MoT test certificates. This Jaguar is being sold with the cherished number plate 275 CAT with a value of £4,000.

1972 Ford Transit Mk. I Transmission: manualMileage:99Ford's ubiquitous Transit range needs little introduction. Launched in 1965, it has been Europe's best-selling light commercial vehicle for the last 40 years, and is now into its fourth-generation and Mk.7 incarnation. More intriguingly, in the 1970s, no less than 95 per cent of robberies employing a vehicle apparently involved a Transit of some description! Famed for bringing car-like handling, drive-ability and comfort to the van world, it was the ideal base for all manner of conversions, including motor caravans. Power in the early models was supplied by 1.7 or 2.0-litre V4 versions of Ford's Essex powerplant. The suspension was deliberately basic, with live axles front and rear. A wide track provided exceptional stability.Built in 1972, but not registered until 1st February 1973, this Mk. I 'single wheel' Ford Transit presents beautifully having just gone through a full restoration. The body was stripped back to bare metal at which point all necessary repairs were undertaken. This included repairs to the floors, chassis legs, bulk head, doors, windows and windscreen surrounds. The van was then treated to a full respray in Ford Light Blue. Fitted with a later Ford Transit engine along with a five-speed gearbox, the van also benefits from modern vehicle reliability. It has also been subtly upgraded with a hidden removable tow hitch, (which hides behind the rear number plate) and the rear interior has been professionally 'wooded out' by a skilled carpenter to a high standard. The van is reported to 'start on the button' and to run and drive very well. Forming part of a large private collection throughout its restoration, the van was originally intended to be a race support vehicle for the vendors historic racing endeavours and is now only now for sale to free up some space for a new incoming project. These early Mk. I Transits are hard to come by, let alone in such wonderful condition and sympathetically upgraded to be practical and pleasant to drive in modern conditions and as such, is an opportunity not to be missed.

* De Morgan (Evelyn, 1855-1919). Blindness and Cupidity Chasing Joy from the City, circa 1897, gold coloured pastel and black chalk on dark grey-brown wove paper contemporaneously laid down on backing board (probably by the artist), depicting the robed female figure of Cupidity, carrying a hoard of precious objects, reaching out towards and following the male robed figure of Blindness, the two figures driving out the angel of Joy from the city towards an iron gate with flowers and vista beyond, some small patches of surface abrasion, and a few fox spots to lower edge, 40 x 59 cm (15 3/4 x 23 1/8 ins), framed and glazed (46.5 x 65.3 cm) QTY: (1)NOTE:Provenance: Clayton-Stamm Collection. One of a very small number of works by the artist executed in gold on dark wove paper. Apart from one such study in Leighton House Museum ('Victoria Dolorosa'), almost all other known studies in gold pastel are held by the De Morgan Foundation, and only one, to our knowledge, has ever before appeared at auction ('The Angel of Death', Dominic Winter Auctioneers, Fine Art Sale, 8th November 2018, lot 458). Only a very few artists used this technique, Edward Burne-Jones being one of them. De Morgan bought dry 'cakes' of gold pigment which she ground to make her own paint and pastels, using them to infuse light and warmth into her works. The De Morgan Foundation (DMF) states "These curious artworks are unlike works by any other artists of the period", adding that they "sparkle with a rare luminosity". These studies seem in the main to have been part of De Morgan's prolific and meticulous output of detailed compositional studies for the full-scale oils she executed, although as the DMF says "These pieces can be considered works of art in their own right and it is apparent that Evelyn often sold them as such".The current work is a preparatory study for Evelyn De Morgan's large-scale allegorical oil 'Blindness and Cupidity Chasing Joy from the City', painted in 1897, and now in the DMF (object number P_EDM_0018; Evelyn de Morgan Oil Paintings, DMF, plate 35). The oil painting was exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery in 1898, at Leighton House in 1902-3, and at Wolverhampton in 1907. The two figures of Blindness and Cupidity are chained to each other, and grope their way forward to an iron gate which blocks the way, a theme which De Morgan returned to at the end of her career in 'The Barred Gate' (circa 1918-19). Both pictures, and a number of others by the artist, convey a powerful message about the spiritual desolation of a life devoted to the corrupting influence of materialism and greed.Evelyn de Morgan's wealth of preparatory drawings give the viewer a fascinating insight into the workings of the artist's mind. Of particular interest here is the figure of Cupidity, who is clearly female in the drawing, but which has morphed into a very much more androgenous figure in the oil painting, with a still feminine figure, but more masculine features (indeed, stated as male in the DMF catalogue online). The figures are obviously the artist's main preoccupation here, with the gate and vista to the right not yet delineated, the dynamic attitudes of the dogs yet to be worked out - their presence only alluded to in outline - and various architectural elements only sketchily outlined or absent. Indeed, this approach is typical of Evelyn's studies in gold; the background detail is pared away, and the figures, in all their beauty, come into stark relief.

AR * Aitchison (Craigie, 1926-2009). Still Life with Jug and Check Sweater, 1952, oil on canvas board, with printed manufacturer's label to verso '"Modern" Canvas Boards prepared in Scotland', 30.5 x 25.5 cms (12 x 10 ins), black painted frameQTY: (1)NOTE:Provenance: Gifted by the artist to his sister-in-law, Sally Aitchison, thence by family descent. Literature:Andrew Gibbon Williams, Craigie – The Art of Craigie Aitchison (Canongate Books 1996), pages 27 and 169, plate 3, illustrated in colour page 24.Cate Haste, Craigie Aitchison – A Life in Colour (Lund Humphries 2014) plate 21, illustrated in colour page 29. Craigie enrolled as a student at the Slade in October 1952, although he had already been receiving painting lessons from Adrian Daintrey and Gerald Frankl, and had completed a number of still lifes, including the present work, earlier the same year at his Edinburgh studio in Church Lane. For some years it was known as ‘Still Life with Jug and Check Cloth’, but the checked area in the painting is in fact a hand knitted jumper made for Craigie by his mother, here depicted casually draped on the table.
