Lot 693

A remarkable early 20th century album containing photographs taken by an English family whilst living in China between 1909 and 1927. The father of the family was a Merchant worked for the Socony-Vacuum Corporation in Shanghai. Socony (Standard Oil Co. of New York, later Mobil) marketed Kerosene to China's enormous population, it was their largest market in Asia. Showing wonderful scenes of daily life in a China which at that time had hardly been touched by the Western world. Containing many images of family, work colleagues including the local Chinese employees plus Standard Oil's plants and installations. Also local scenes such as Chinese shipyards, markets, peasants farming, irrigating fields etc. There are many photos of particular note: Looking down on naked workers in a salt mine, a plague victim in Manchuria, rope making, a lot of photos of the Yangtze Gorges and of local craft navigating the rapids on the Yangtze River. Also the burning of opium pipes which is annotated on the reverse: "Hooray for Stocony! Standard Oil Co. to the fore in stamping out the curse of China - Opium!" This large album has over 90 pages, most filled on both sides plus many loose photographs. Also a number of very interesting 11x16cm images annotated 'Hanhow Riots, February 1911' which show busy street scenes in various locations and men from HMS Thistle guarding the Bund with a machine gun. The family obviously enjoyed a busy social life, there are many images of picnics, garden tea parties, tennis, golf, gymkhanas and fetes with other Western Socony employees. They had Chinese servants and enjoyed a comfortable lifestyle. The father clearly travelled extensively during his employment, although the bulk of images show life in Shanghai, Hankow and some in Peking there are also photos taken in Japan, Canada, Moscow, Siberia, Cologne and a holiday in Margate in 1914. Taken as a whole, there are several hundred photographs, many of excellent quality, depicting a very broad range of fascinating Chinese scenes from the earliest years of the 20th century. Condition Report: Over 500 photographs.

Lot 694

Three remarkable early 20th century albums containing photographs taken by an English family whilst living in China between 1909 and 1927. The father of the family was a Merchant worked for the Socony-Vacuum Corporation in Shanghai. Socony (Standard Oil Co. of New York, later Mobil) marketed Kerosene to China's enormous population, it was their largest market in Asia. The smallest suede bound album decorated 'Vancouver' with many holiday shots of family and friends camping, fishing swimming and canoeing which could be in Canada. Style of clothing would indicate these to have been taken around 1910. Other images of a picnic in China. The second album has a handwritten frontispiece: Socony, Moukden, China. Moukden changed it's name to Shenyang in 1914, so this album would seem to have been started pre-1914. This is a more family orientated album: friends, pets, ponies, Chinese servants holding ponies, a holiday in Wales, also a number of loose photos. The third larger album of 25 pages, well covered on both sides with family photos taken in China, on board ships travelling between London, San Francisco and Shanghai and many loose photographs of early 20th century Chinese interest. Condition Report: 444 mounted photographs and 221 loose.
