John Ridgewell (1937-2004) ''Gasometer and Canal locks at Bingley, W. Yorks'' Signed, inscribed and dated 1977 on old label verso, oil on canvas, 64.5cm by 100cm Born in Essex in 1937, John Ridgewell studied at Colchester School of Art between 1954-8 where he was taught the skill of wood engraving by John O'Conner, who was related to the surrealist painter Paul Nash. In 1958 John entered the Royal College of Art aged just 21, he was a student at the same time as David Hockney and R B Kitaj. On graduation he accepted a position to teach at Scarborough School of Art from 1961-6, leaving to focus solely on painting. His artistic style was strongly influenced by the work of Georges Braque in 1956, who John admired throughout his life. John's distinctive artistic style developed during his time in Scarborough where he was inspired by the dramatic landscape around him. It was during his time in Yorkshire that John began to represent and interpret landscape in the surrealist style, which became characteristic of his work. Throughout his life he exhibited in mixed shows at the New Art Centre, Piccadilly Art Gallery and Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. He has a loyal connection with the Austen Hayes Gallery, York. Austen Hayes believed in John's work and held a number of one man exhibitions in the gallery in the 1960's. He also exhibited at the Grape Lane Gallery and Minstral Galleries.

The length of the blade insures that it reaches the vital organs and the clamshell deflects any blood splatter. The dagger is in overall really good used condition. The blade is still bright and shiny, but does show some age tarnish spots and some handling wear from use. The stag is in excellent, crack-free condition and is very tight. The ricasso is of the s shape with an acorn at each tip. The scabbard is leather and is in good shape. The entire length of the dagger is 36 cm.
