Tony O’Malley HRHA (1913-2003)Abstract CompositionOil on board, 92.5 x 17cm (36½ x 6¾'')Signed with initialsProvenance: The collection of Brian and Anne FrielKilkenny born painter Tony O’Malley began painting full time in 1958 having worked as a bank clerk, while painting in his spare time. He is best known for his paintings done in Cornwall, where he lived for thirty years after visiting St Ives in 1955. He returned to settle there in 1960. While he was strongly influenced by the St Ives artistic community, his relationship was one of engagement rather than direct participation, although he did meet and work with Peter Lanyon and Patrick Heron. In the 1970’s O’Malley married his wife Jane, an artist and they spent their winters in the Bahamas. Influenced by the light and surroundings of the Carribean, much of his work from this time became more colourful and vibrant, moving away from the more sombre tones of his work in the 1950’s and 60’s. His work has been exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy, Taylor Galleries,Dublin, the Coram Gallery in London and he represented Ireland at ROSC ‘80. An honorary member of the RHA (elected 1990), he was elected Saoi of Aosdana in 1993 and the following year received an Honorary Doctorate from Trinity College Dublin. When he died in 2003 he was rightly regarded as one of Ireland’s leading painters. The Irish Museum of Modern Art held a major retrospective of his work in 2005.
Paul Henry RHA (1877-1958)Landscape with CottagesOil on board, 29 x 39cm (11½ x 15¼'')SignedAcquired from a London gallery in the late 1920’s, this previously unrecorded work was recently discovered in Bavaria where it has passed down through the family of the original purchaser. Painted in the 1920’s after Paul Henry’s long sojourn in Achill had come to an end and after he had returned to live in Dublin, it could well be a view in Achill Sound with Corraun in the background. Henry often produced compositions that were closely related to one another and this work has a familiar treatment of the foreground with the reflections of the cottages and the wonderful billowing clouds. The exquisite blue mountains have a magisterial quality and their modelling, with the clever use of translucent glazes, provides a sense of both scale and perspective. It is for such works that Paul Henry rightfully deserves his place as Ireland’s foremost landscape painter of the 20th century. This work is numbered 1356 in S.B.Kennedy’s on-going catalogue of Paul Henry’s oeuvre.
Oisin Kelly RHA (1915-1981)Kilcorban MadonnaTerracotta, 62cm high (24½'')Sculptor Oisín Kelly (1915-81) is best known for his large public bronzes, such as Two Working Men at the County Hall, Cork (1969), The Children of Lir at the Garden of Remembrance, Parnell Square, Dublin (1971), Jim Larkin in O’Connell Street, Dublin (1977), and The Chariot of Life at the Irish Life Centre, Dublin (1982). But he also made a great many smaller pieces, in various media. Many of these deal with devotional themes, and his religious works are to be seen in churches throughout the country. The statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary with the Infant Christ illustrated here has an interesting history. Oisín was greatly influenced by medieval Irish art, and this piece was inspired by the Kilcorban Madonna, an oak carving which dates from around the year 1200. It is currently on display in the Clonfert Diocesan Museum, Co. Galway. Oisín was commissioned by the Reverend Thomas Hogan to carve a similar piece for the restored Ballintubber Abbey, Co. Mayo, and it was completed in 1966. It was often his practice to treat the same theme in different media, and he decided to make this stoneware version of the statue, of which six copies were kiln-fired. During boyhood visits to the Conamara Gaeltacht, Oisín developed a love for traditional Irish céilí dancing. From the beginning of his career as a sculptor he was fascinated by the challenge of convincingly representing céilí dancers in movement. One of his earliest works was a male dancer in stained wood, and he also modelled a popular Dancing Couple, which was included in the Kilkenny Design Workshops ceramic range. Another lively piece comprises a group of three dancers, carved in wood. The bronze figure illustrated here is one of an issue of seven: it is a smaller version of Dancing Girl, on permanent display at Fitzgerald Park, Cork.Fergus S. Kelly(Son of Oisín Kelly, and author of The Life and Work of Oisín Kelly, with photography by Hugh McElveen, Derreen Books, 2015)
