* HAMISH LAWRIE (SCOTTISH 1919 - 1987), STANDING STONES AT DURRIS watercolour on paper, signed and dated '47, titled verso image size 24.5cm x 34.5cm, overall size 49cm x 59cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Note: Born in Dunfermline and trained at Aberdeen (Gray's School of Art). Went to London in 1941 and worked as a cameraman in the film industry. His first sale of a painting was to Dylan Thomas (for £5). His first major exhibition was in 1947 at Wolf Mankowitz's Little Gallery. He worked in Africa 1949-51 and returned to Scotland where his old friend JD Fergusson (1874 - 1961) persuaded him that he should go to France for inspiration and to develop his work. He lived there for nine years at Saint-Paul-de-Vence which had long been a haven of the famous, mostly due to La Colombe d'Or Hotel which had been a magnet since the early 20's for artists and celebrities. After returning to Scotland, his favourite subjects were the Western Highlands and the Outer Hebrides which he painted with great gusto, brilliant colours and a heavy impasto. A regular exhibitor in Edinburgh, he was a popular figure in the Scottish Arts Club.

* SELMA HORTENSE BURKE (AMERICAN 1900 - 1995), GIRL, PRONE bas-relief sculpture, signed and dated '75 46cm x 32cm Note: Dr Selma Burke was a world-renowned sculptor and painter whose relief plaque portrait of President Franklin D Roosevelt appears on the dime. One of ten children of an African Methodist Episcopal Zion minister in rural North Carolina, Burke first learned to sculpt using clay from a nearby river. Encouraged by her mother to pursue a practical career, Burke trained as a certified nurse. While working as a nurse in New York, she became involved in the Harlem Renaissance and served as a sculptor's model, all the while preparing to become an artist. In 1941, she received an M.F.A. at Columbia University and later studied art in Europe. Primarily a sculptor, Burke crafted figures of rugged beauty from wood, bronze, or stone, hewn in a style of almost classical realism. She sculpted several celebrities, including Dr Martin Luther King Jr. and Pearl S. Buck. The bronze statue of Buck, Uplift, was dedicated at the Pearl S. Buck House in 1991. She also painted in watercolour, oil, and acrylics. A committed educator, the bearer of two earned and eight honorary doctorates, Burke established two art schools while teaching at Haverford and Swarthmore Colleges. She also taught at the Solebury School and several other institutions. “One of the most notable sculptors of the twentieth century” according to the National Women’s History Museum, the celebrated artist, educator, and self-described “people’s sculptor.” Selma Burke is celebrated for her lifelong commitment to the art of sculpture, to art education and for her significance in the Harlem Renaissance. Burke achieved remarkable success as a Black woman sculptor at a time when few female or Black artists, and even fewer Black female artists, were able to achieve any success or recognition in the United States.

* COLIN FRASER (SCOTTISH b. 1956), EARLY MORNING LIGHT egg tempura on board, signed image size 67cm x 46cm, overall size 86cm x 63cm Framed and under glass. Note: By repute, the lady is the artist's wife. Colin Fraser's work rarely appears at auction but earlier in 2021 Bonhams, London sold "Warm Light" by Fraser for £3000 (hammer) - lot 153, Modern British & Irish Art 28th April 2021. Note 2: Colin Fraser was born in Glasgow in 1956. He studied art in Brighton while in his twenties before moving to Lund in southern Sweden, where he lives with his wife and children. He exhibits regularly at the Royal Academy Summer show, Catto Gallery and Petley Fine Art in London, Mira Godard Gallery in Canada as well as galleries in New York and Glasgow. His work is held in numerous private and corporate collections throughout North America, the UK, Europe and Asia. Ever since his first exhibition in Brighton in 1978, Colin Fraser has worked almost exclusively in egg tempera, which has the benefit of being very long lasting, with examples over two thousand years old still in existence, and was the most widely used painting medium until the sixteenth century, when it was superseded by oils. However, it is also extraordinarily time-consuming. The painted surface must be built up layer by translucent layer, with the paint drying instantaneously and not amenable to manipulation afterwards, unlike oil paints. Although a notoriously difficult medium, it has become a firm favourite of Fraser’s, who says that the “restrictions have been paramount in helping me be more direct in my approach to the work, with the instant drying and transparency of the paint actively contributing to a higher level of spontaneity of execution”. Colin Fraser is particularly drawn to its vitality which reminds him “of the dynamism of the sun – never static, always changing”. “Observed light is usually what attracts me into the process of painting,” he says. “The surface of a work painted in tempera simply has a unique glow which cannot be imitated in other mediums”. Constructing each painting is an arduous process, each beginning with an idea or a chance observation followed by weeks of experimentation with arrangements and preparatory drawings. Many of his scenes are staged with strategic placement of chairs, diaphanous textiles and trays of fruit. He believes that the painter “chooses the content and the arrangement, and then it becomes a question of striving to achieve a particular mood”.

As his reputation grew he began to publish several well regarded books on pedigree dogs, featuring over a hundred of his illustrations. He also established a line in copying orientalist paintings for Middle Eastern clients. During the mid 1980’s Roy began producing his first still life paintings, his passionate interest in the genre led him to study the techniques of the Dutch Masters Willem Kalf and De Heem and the Victorian painters Duffield and Preyer. His adaption of traditional techniques to his unique contemporary style has earned Roy an enthusiastic following amongst collectors of the genre.
