That this corporation present the Freedom of the Borough to John Foster Spence Esquire the Mayor as an evidence of it's appreciation of the distinguished and untiring services he has rendered to his Native Town and District during the last half century". *John Foster Spence was a philanthropist who spent most of his life serving the community where he'd been born in 1818, becoming a Councillor, Mayor, Alderman and Magistrate. As well as being involved with many local committees and societies, in 1893 he was honoured when he was given Freedom of the Borough of Tynemouth. He was an important civic figure known as "The Grand Old Man of Shields". All proceeds from the sale of this lot are being donated to the R.N.L.I.
