Lot 1

A French Railways brass CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE "141.R.496". As carried by the SNCF standard gauge 2-8-2 built by Baldwin Locomotive Works, USA, as Works No. 72309 in 1946. A coal burner, it was a post-war reconstruction design for heavy mixed traffic which lasted to the end of steam in the 1970's. Allocated to the Nord Region, it was scrapped in 1971. In completely ex-loco condition, complete with its top shedplate-holder.

A Pullman coach brass table lamp, the domed circular base stamped "PHOENIX". Complete with an original celluloid shade lettered "Pullman Car Company" and in full working order. "Phoenix" is a parlour car built at Preston Park Brighton in 1952. The interior decoration was specially commissioned from Mary Adshead; it depicted the Seasons and transport themes - all in collage work, of stamps, used bank notes and bonds. Apparently a favourite car of the Royal family, it was used for state arrivals and in the consist of the "Golden Arrow". It was withdrawn from service in September 1972 and is now in the VSOE train. This style of lamp, the rarest of all the Pullman lamp styles, was unique to "Phoenix" and is most redolent of the early 1950's.

A WORKSPLATE "Nasmyth Wilson & Co Limited No.1095-1915 Patricroft Manchester". As carried by the Nizam's Guaranteed State Railway, Hyderabad, India metre gauge 4-8-0 with outside cylinders. It was commandeered by the War Office in March 1916 and shipped to Tanganyika to aid the British war effort against the Germans in what was then Deutsche Ost Afrika. When Britain gained control of the former German Colony, the loco became Tanganyika Railways No.200 Class NZ. A successful loco it, and three others, became the prototype for the Tanganyika Railways Class G 4-8-0's built from 1927 to 1930. It survived the Second World War and became East African Railways and Harbours No.2201. Withdrawn in the late 1950's, this plate was bought by the vendor's husband then working for EAR&H in Dar Es Salaam. Triangular cast brass, 14"x51/2", lightly face-restored only.

A WORKSPLATE "La Maquinista Terrestre Y Maritima No.232 Barcelona 1926". As carried by a Spanish State Railways (RENFE) 5'6" gauge 4-8-4T No.242-0268. It was originally built for the Madrid-Zaragosa-Alicante Railway as No.1638. It was used for heavy suburban traffic and short distance expresses. Based on a 4-8-0 design, the Class was phased out in the 1960's. Oval cast brass, 121/4"x8", polished and repainted. This plate was purchased from the RENFE stores at Principe Pio in June 1969.

A WORKS NUMBERPLATE "London & North Eastern Railway 2242 Darlington Works 1918". As carried by the ex NER Class T2 0-8-0, NER 2242, built at Darlington and emerging to traffic in December 1918. Designed by Raven, these 0-8-0's were employed almost exclusively on freight duties in the north-east of England. 2242 became LNER 3399 Class Q6 from 20th October 1946; BR 63399 from 17th December 1948. Latterly a Blaydon, Thornaby and Tyne Dock engine, she was withdrawn from the latter on 16th March 1964 and cut up at Darlington in May. Oval cast-iron, 9"x5", face-repainted only, the height of the numerals somewhat curtailed.

A SHEDPLATE 71H (Templecombe S&D 1950-February 1958; Yeovil Pen Mill February 1958-January 1959). In ex-loco condition with the BR(S)E triangle clear on the back. Very rare.

A London Brighton & South Coast Railway 4-aspect long-necked HANDLAMP. The body, stamped "LB&SC Ry", bears a large oval brass plate embossed "London Brighton and South Coast Railway Company; a smaller oval brass maker's plate "Arthur J. Poole Manu. 25 Pershore St, Birmingham", and is stamped "B.1238 MIDHURST" (twice). The reducing-cone is stamped "LB&SCR", and the top handle "B1237 BC". Complete with a vessel stamped "S(B)R"; a SR brass/ceramic burner; reflector and all glasses. In fine condition, stripped of paint. Midhurst station, on the Petersfield-Pulborough line, and the junction for Chichester, opened in 1881 (to replace an earlier station opened in 1866), and closed in 1955.

A Beira Railway Company locomotive brass smokebox roundel. 11" diameter, with intertwined "BRT" ornate letters, and slightly convex. Face polished only with a fine ex-loco back. "BRT" refers to the Beira Railway Trust, a finance company, which owned some locomotives operating on Rhodesian Railways. Beira is on the coast of Mozambique; the Beira Railway linked it with Rhodesia. These smokebox roundels were fitted to 3'6" gauge, 2.6.2+2.6.2 Garratts; 4-8-0's; and 4-8-2's.

A South African Railways brass bi-lingual CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE "4090.GMAM". As carried by the SAR GMA/M Class 3'6" gauge 4.8.2+2.8.4T Garratt 4090 built by Beyer Peacock as Works No.7688 in 1956. A post-war design of modern lightweight Garratt in service into the late 1980's. A number survive in industrial use, or are preserved. This one is stored. Oval cast brass, 203/4"x141/2", in ex-loco condition.

An East Coast Joint Stock original gold leaf garter arms transfer on board. This is the final device applied to the varnished teak coaches from the early 1890's. Its shield is quartered with the arms of England, Scotland, Edinburgh and London. 15"x17". Good condition.

A TOTEM "YEOFORD". BR(S) light green, fully-flanged. In very good condition with only a few minor flange chips. From the ex LSWR station on the Exeter to Barnstaple line, junction for Okehampton. It opened as "Yeoford Junction" in 1854; and was renamed by BR. THIS TOTEM HAS ONLY APPEARED ONCE IN AUCTION - 13 YEARS AGO!

Three Rhodesia Railway CABSIDE NUMBERPLATES - "1204.DE2" (a 1CoCo1 1710 H.P. 3'6" gauge diesel electric built by English Electric as Works No.2235 and Dick Kerr in 1955, withdrawn in January 1984, oval cast brass 19"x123/4" in ex loco condition); "1312.DE3" (a 1CoCO1 1850 H.P. 3'6" gauge diesel electric built by English Electric as Works No.3260 and Vulcan Foundry as Works No.D746 in 1962, withdrawn in January 1994, oval cast brass 19"x123/4" in ex-loco condition); "RR 1413 DE4" (a CoCo 1780 H.P. 3'6" gauge diesel electric built by Brush as Works No. 412 in 1964, emerging to traffic in January 1965 LAST OF THE CLASS BUILT, withdrawn in August 1993, 19"x121/2", also in ex-loco condition). 1204 was a heavy-duty mainline design - predecessor of the BR Class 40 - remaining in front-line service until the 1980's; 1312 was a development of the earlier DE2 design but with only one cab, withdrawn in the 1990's; 1413 was a mainline design with a similar appearance to a Brush Class 47. A chance to obtain cabsides from 3 different classes at one go.

A WORKSPLATE "Beyer Peacock & Co. Ltd 7307 Beyer-Garratt Locomotive British Patents......South African Patents......Manchester 1949". As carried by the Kenya Uganda Railway Class EC3 4.8.4.+4.8.4T Garratt No.95. It became East Africa Railways property in 1949 and was renumbered 5807. From the second batch of a 1939 design, this was an advanced design which provided considerable improvements in loading and performance. Out of use by the 1970's, one is preserved. Oval cast brass, 101/4"x61/2", in ex-loco condition with traces of Garratt maroon paint.

A BR(S) dark green enamel DIRECTION SIGN "HERNE HILL STATION"/"NORTH DULWICH STATION" (with the "British Railways" totem at the top and bi-directional feathered arrow at the bottom). Flanged, 28"x13", in excellent condition with only a couple of minor repaired edge chips. Herne Hill station was opened by the LC&DR in 1862; North Dulwich by the LBSCR in 1868. Southern Region direction signs are rare.

A WORKSPLATE "Berliner Maschinenbau-Actien-Gesellschaft Nr. 9317. 1928 Vormals L. Schwartzkopff. Berlin". As carried by a 60 cm. gauge articulated 0-10-0T that worked for the Sragi Sugar Mill, Java into the 1990's. Rectangular cast brass with expanded top and bottom rims. Overall 151/4"x113/4", face-polished with a couple of minor score marks. The bust of Louis Schwartzkopff is missing from the centre but I understand reproductions can be obtained. A rare and impressive plate.

A WORKSPLATE "Montreal Locomotive Works Limited 72187 Jan. 1945". As carried by the Great Indian Peninsular Railway 5'6" gauge Class CWD 2-8-2 M76. A wartime design for general duties built in large numbers in Canada (hence the prefix C-WD). It became all India Railways No.5575 (later 12021) and remained in service into the 1980's. Rectangular convex brass 133/4"x71/2", face-polished and repainted only.

A WORKSPLATE "LMS Rebuilt 1920 Derby". Quite a few ex Midland Railway locomotives were rebuilt at Derby in 1920. They were examples of Classes 2606 and 2781 4-4-0's; Classes 1262 and 2282 0-4-4T's; Class 1102 0-6-0T's and Classes 1142 and 1873 0-6-0's. Oval, cast-brass, 101/2"x6", face-restored only. Slight damage to both bolt holes and one end slightly bent forwards.

A DOME WORKSPLATE "Societe Italiana ERNESTO BREDA Per Costruzioni Meccaniche No.1294 MILANO 1911". As carried by the Italian State Railways (FS) standard gauge 0-8-0 well tank No. 895.031. Used in large marshalling yards, the last survivors worked into the late 1960's. At least one survives. Rectangular convex cast-brass, 133/4"x73/4", in ex-loco condition with no paint.

A TOTEM "WANDSWORTH TOWN". BR(S) light green, fully-flanged. A well-repaired face-chip and a few repaired edge chips, but overall very good. From the ex LSWR station, between Clapham Junction and Barnes, opened as "Wandsworth" in 1846; and renamed in 1903.

A WORKSPLATE "Sharp, Stewart & Co Limited Atlas Works 4616-1900 Glasgow". As carried by the Barry Railway B1 Class 0-6-2T, Barry 114, that emerged from Works in June 1900 at a cost of £2,760. A Barry based engine all her life, she was used initially on coal trains on weekdays and excursions on Sundays while in Barry Railway ownership. She became GWR 270 on 1st January 1922, and a S/9 boiler was fitted in November 1936. After 1932 she was used mainly on shunting in the Barry and Radyr areas. She was withdrawn on 6th April 1951 after running 791,029 miles. She was cut up at Swindon by 14th July 1951. Oval cast brass, 93/4"x6", face-repainted but not polished. The fine ex-loco back is stamped with the GWR number 270, as it should be. There is an extra hole at the bottom, almost certainly done in service.

A Rhymney Railway S&T LAMP. Plated "RR" on the chimney with a GWR style cap. A large circular front lens; top handle, and back bracket. With its original vessel and slides. 11" x 9" x 16" tall. In original white paint and good condition. Rare, of course.

A WORKSPLATE "Henschel & Sohn....Nr.21078-1928 Kassel Germany". As carried by the South African Railways 3'6" gauge Class S 0-8-0 SAR 367. A heavy shunting design, all were out of SAR use by 1977 but several were sold into industrial service. 367 was sold to dealers Dunns of Witbank and operated at Apex Mines, then Grootvlei. Three survive in preservation, including this one. Rectangular cast brass, 81/4"x4", in ex-loco condition.

A TOTEM "SUNNYMEADS". BR(S) light green, fully-flanged. In very good condition with a couple of well-repaired edge chips. From the ex LSWR station, on the Branch from Staines to Windsor & Eton Riverside, opened in 1927. A rare totem only sold twice in Auction - the last in 1997.

A WORKSPLATE "The Baldwin Locomotive Works 71325 Phila. USA.Feb - 1945". As carried by a USA Transportation Corps 5' gauge 2-10-0 No.5624 supplied to the USSR State Railway as Class YE-A No.2925. Most of the class were withdrawn in the 1960's but a large number remained in strategic storage into the 1980's, mainly in Siberia. A few survive. A rectangular cast-iron plate with a triangular top including the Company logo. Overall 141/2"x9", in ex-loco condition.

A TOTEM "WADSLEY BRIDGE". BR(E) dark blue, half-flanged. Some edge chip repairs and slightly lacking shine, but a rare totem (only 3 have been sold in auction, the last in 1997). From the ex GCR station, on the Sheffield Victoria to Penistone line, opened in 1845 and closed in 1959 although trains disembarked supporters there for Sheffield Wednesday football matches right into the 1980's (at a time when they had supporters!). Sadly even that facility ended before Myers Grove Auctions started, as it was the nearest station.

A TOTEM "BOGNOR REGIS". BR(S) dark green, fully-flanged. A small blemish on the 'B', otherwise virtually mint. From the ex LBSCR Branch terminus station from the Arundel-Chichester line. It opened as "Bognor" in 1864 and was renamed in 1929.

A GWR china sugar bowl and cream jug in the black leaf design. Both items clearly display the black 1930's "GWR Hotels" roundel device on the side. The cream jug, dated 1938, is 23/4" tall and mint; the sugar bowl 3" diameter, 11/2" tall; a very minor stain inside the base.
