Joseph Wright of Derby (1734-1797), Mount Vesuvius from the Bay of Naples, oil on canvas, 63cm x 83cm, Provenance: Formerly collection of Col HA Johnson, Allestree Hall. Wright was in Naples from early October to early November 1774, and there had not been a proper eruption of the volcano since 1767 and the next was observed by his friend Thomas Jones in September 1779. There was clearly some minor lava flow when Wright was there, but only a gouache now in Derby Museum (and painted on the spot) and a drawing seem to have been done when he was there, all his other views were done immediately afterwards or over the following decade. Other artists, like Piere-Jacques Volaire and Pietro Fabris captured the 1779 eruption in much the same general style, and indeed, some of Volaire`s Vesuvius paintings have been taken for Wrights.Volaire`s Vesuvius paintings are more theatrical than Wright`s, and usually have foreground figures conversing as if attending a firework display and not an earth-shattering event. Wright painted at least 12 Vesuviuses, 10 in Nicholson, plus that owned by Lord Antrim, and that sold at Sothebys 14/6/2001 Lot 93 (est. £60,000-£80,000) where the catalogue note claims he did "at least thirty"!
