Huser spine faded [BMC II 351; Goff N-176; Hain 11832] folio Augsburg Anton Sorg [c.1484]. *** Here Nider gathers together stories from classical and contemporary authors about all types of witches ghosts revenants devils and divination. Book 5 was one of the sources for Institoris and Sprenger`s Malleus Maleficarum. Nider had attended the Council of Basel in 1431 at which he was given the task of converting the Hussites of Bohemia.

The Decretales or Decretals is the name given in Canon Law to those letters or pronouncements of the pope that formulate decisions in ecclesiastical law.

However this masks something of an anti-feminist treatise with a distinctly visible suspicion of the female sex and sexuality.

He frequently refused both the Archbishopric of Cambrai and the Abbey of Tournai offered to him by Charles V whose almoner he had been.

[Languedoc] June 1108. *** Remarkable early twelfth-century will drawn up on the testator`s departure on pilgrimage or crusade `ad sanctum sepulchrum domini` i.e. to the Holy Sepulchre at Jerusalem made recently more accesible by the success of the First Crusade which had taken Jerusalem in 1099. A principal benficiary is the church of Saint Sauveur at Villemagne now Villemagne-l`Argentiere in the Herault departement Languedoc-Roussillon with bequests to other churches and to individuals including Bernard`s brother and sister.

The "Sorrows" are five books of elegiac poetry written during Ovid`s exile at Tomis expressing his sadness and isolation and justifying his poetical style and content. It is thought that his exile by Augustus was brought about by his discussion of the crime of adultery in his Ars Amatoria which sailed close to the wind of the emperor`s moral legislation.

We have been unable to trace any copies at auction in the last 25 years and have located only one copy in a library (Folger). The work was withdrawn from circulation and placed on the Index of Prohibited books in December 1622; being re-issued in 1624 and then subsequent parts later. Bronzini celebrates the abilities and skills of women and in doing so provides much detailed biographical information on the female writers and artists of the time. Provenace: Pietro Odescalchi (ink stamp to title).
