CAMPBELL MALCOLM: (1885-1948) British Land & Water Speed Record Holder. Typed Statement Signed, Malcolm Campbell, one page, 4to, n.p., n.d. Campbell’s statement is entitled Peace and reads, in full, ‘If we consider for a moment the process of Evolution it must be apparent that we have reached our present state of civilisation only by very gradual stages. In the beginning life was the acme of selfishness-every man existed for himself; he was bound by no laws, other than those of nature, and had no responsibilities except the provision of food and shelter for himself and his family. Then in time came the tribal system-several families banding themselves together for protection against their mutual enemies, every little community being a world unto itself. And today how far have we progressed? The tribes have become nations, but is not their attitude still the same-each one for itself? Surely, however, now that we have reached a comparatively high standard of civilisation it should be possible to continue this process of amalgamation and gradually to unite the nations into one great brotherhood? Once a people is united, war is no longer a possibility-for we do not destroy that which is part of us. It is up to us today to strive unceasingly in order to reach that stage of mutual understanding and tolerance of our neighbours which will prevent a recurrence of the unmerciful War of which so many of us have such bitter memories. By this means only can universal and lasting Peace be secured.’ Signed in bold blue fountain pen ink at the conclusion. Mounted to a folio page and with some slight, minor wrinkling at the edges. About VG Campbell prepared his statement for publication in the Pax Mundi book; an anthology of sentiments on peace published in Switzerland by the World League for Peace. Between 1925 and 1932 many notable persons from around the world were asked to comment on the prospects of world peace and the volume included contributions from Marie Curie, Guglielmo Marconi, Albert Einstein, Rabindranath Tagore and many others.
