George Edwards Hering (1805-1879) The Giudecca, Venice, Oil on canvas, Signed and indistinctly dated 1857, Inscribed on label attached to reverse, 72.5 x 129.5cm (281/4 x 51in) Provenance: James Blyth, Woolhampton House, Berkshire; thence by descent. George Edwards Hering studied in Venice for two years after studying in Munich and travelling in Switzerland with his patron Lord Erskine. He later travelled to Rome, where he met John Paget, a publisher of travel books, for whom he worked on many illustrations. Hering returned to London in 1836 and became a regular exhibitor at the RA, BI and SS. After Hering’s death, two sales of his works were held at Christie’s, 7th May 1880 and 25th April 1881.
John Frederick Herring Snr. (Surrey 1795-1865 Tunbridge Wells, Kent) and Henry Bright (Saxmundham 1814-1873 Ipswich) A Kentish hop garden, Oil on canvas, Signed and dated J. F. Herring Sen. 1855, H. Bright 1857 lower right, 91.5 x 110.5cm (361/4 x 431/2in) Provenance: Commissioned by the Courage family, and thence by descent until 1986, when acquired by a private collection, Berkshire. This painting is a version (with variations) of the right-hand section of the picture by Herring Snr dated 1854-1860 measuring 24 x 43in, which was sold at Christie’s London on 29th July 1977, Lot 47 to Agnews for £7,000. It is also recorded that in 1958 Agnews had a fragment of this picture, measuring 27? x 35in signed and dated 1855.

A German bronze group ‘Dancing Bacchante and Infant Satyr’, after August Schreitmuller, circa 1900, the figures portrayed on a circular naturalistically cast base, with stamped foundry mark M u Co. and signed A.Schreitmuller fec, later mounted onto a square section black marble base with two oval brass presentation panels, the front one inscribed Humoreske, the reverse one 23 Nov 1908 Helene Adolph, the bronze 30cm high, 30cm wide, 37.5cm high overall.
