Hafiz Rahmat the leader of the Rohillas was killed; this action was included in the charges against Hastings during his later trial for impeachment. The portrait shows Lloyd reclining dressed in the robes of a sheikh with a hookah and camels in the background. Lloyd a botanist accompanying the expedition accidentally shot himself whilst cleaning a rifle.

May 28 1892.” Mathews is mentioned with warm gratitude for his assistance in Whymper`s preface p.xii. Both vol. also with bookplate of C.E.Mathews mountaineer and author of The Annals of Mont Blanc 1898.

The author recounts his travels between 1790 and 1810; he visited the Pelew Hawaiian and Galapagos Islands; Manila Canton and Macao; New Guinea Australia and the East Indies; and Chile and Peru. Also includes accounts of whaling and seal-hunting.

Funnell (William) A Voyage round the World containing an Account of Captain Dampier`s Expedition first edition 5 folding engraved maps 10 plates contemporary panelled calf paper repairs to spine ends rubbed [Sabin 26213; Hill 665] 8vo by W.Botham for James Knapton 1707. *** According to Hill it was “Funnell not Dampier who really circumnavigated the glove on this voyage as Dampier proceeded only as far as the South Seas. The purpose of the expedition was to harass the Spaniards and take plunder from vessels and towns in South America. Its failure was due to differences that arose between the two men. Funnell arrived in England before Dampier and seized the opportunity to compose a relation of his voyage a task for which he was poorly qualified. His narrative contained much that was objectionable to Dampier who immediately afterwards published a “Vindication” of his voyage pointing out Funnell`s misrepresentations.”

It crossed the Rocky Mountains in 1793 travelling from Fort Chipewyan to the Pacific Coast. The work includes vocabularies of a number of Indian languages.

Matheson (James) The Present Position and Prospects of the British Trade with China first edition presentation copy from the author half-title original cloth printed paper label to upper cover upper joint starting but holding firm spine ends and corners slightly frayed rubbed a few scratches [Cordier 2178; Lust 647] 8vo 1836. *** The Scot Matheson was a founder of the Canton based trading firm Jardine Matheson and Company. In 1827 he provided a small hand press for the printing of the Canton Register; the first English language newspaper in China. He returned to Scotland in the early 1840s and bought the Isle of Lewis for over half a million pounds and built Lews Castle near Stornoway. The presentation inscription reads `?Col. Oswald with the author`s compts.`

Egypt.- [Poole (Sophia)] The Englishwoman in Egypt: Letters from Cairo Written during a residence there in 1842 3 & 4 3 vol. first edition (including second series vol.3) wood-engraved frontispiece 20 plates and a plan with a key 8pp. advertisements at end of vol.2 some spotting or light foxing near fine original green cloth spine gilt [Blackmer 1329] 8vo 1844-1846. *** The third volume which appeared in 1846 contains letters written in 1845 and 1846. Mrs. Poole accompanied her brother Edward Lane to Egypt in 1842 and remained there for seven years. The historical notices of Cairo were from notes by Lane. In 1860 Mrs. Poole with her son Reginald provided the descriptions for Francis Frith`s Egypt Sinai and Jerusalem and for his Cairo Sinai Jerusalem and the Pyramids of Egypt.

La Touche (Thomas Henry Digges 1865-1938) A collection of 250 glass positive slides comprising 214 landscape architectural and figure subjects and 36 drawings maps and diagrams each 8 x 8cm. edges paper-taped all but a few with individual printed titles several rather tarnished otherwise in good condition preserved in a four-drawer fitted wooden box with the label of the Manchester slide-makers Flatters & Garnett c.1882-1897 (250) *** La Touche was appointed to the Geological Survey of India based in Calcutta in 1881. His first expeditions covered here were in search of coal deposits in the little-known hills of Khasi Garo and Singpho along the Brahmaputra in Assam. Photographs of the terrain are supplemented by an interesting group of studies of the region`s villagers. Later journeys took him further afield along the Himalayas to Sikkim Nepal Tibet Jamma and Kashmir where he photographed rock formations mountain valleys glaciers and other geological features. Many of the present subjects document La Touche`s important contribution to the study of the Great Assam Earthquake of 1897 published two years later for which he surveyed landslips and damaged buildings at the epicentre the hill station of Shillong. His correspondence is preserved in the British Library (Mss Eur C258) and includes frequent references to his photography. The archives of the Geological Survey of India include some dozens of his glass plates but this collection appears to be the most extensive to have survived.
