Dou, GerritLeiden 1612 - 1675 Still Life with Armour, Shield, Helmet, Sword, Leather Jacket and Drum. Oil on wood. 31,7 x 46,5cm. Framed. Provenance: Private collection, Baden-Württemberg since 2003. The painting is in the RKD databank, The Hague listed under artwork no. 114826 and managed as "In the Art of the Gerrit Dou Circle". Assessment: Prof. Dr. Werner Sumowski from June 17th, 2003: "The image was previously misunderstood as a piece from a Dou-follower. Drum, shield, armour, helmet and leather jacket were copied from Dous Budapest`s painting "Standing Soldier with Weapons" still life (Sumowski, Paintings of the Rembrandt School, Landau l983 ff., I, Nr.268 with coloured tables: circa 1630).This assumption was not correct. The objects (except for one) are not all identical; also the perspectives are not the same. Only the shield indicates otherwise, which is missing the nail-like ornaments along the round and on the edge. The objects belong to a props supply. They must have been Rembrandt`s property, because the shield of the Budapest painter has appeared since 1626 in his weapon still life "Ungedeutete Historienszene" held in the Leidener Museum (Corpus I 1982, A 6 m. Abb.). These props would have been seen by Dou during his lessons in Rembrandt`s studio between 1628-1631. The student would have used them for his earlier still life: the small chest harness came from "Self Portrait on the Easel", at the time near Kisters in Kreuzlingen (Sumowski 1983ff., No.261 with ill.: circa 1629/30) before and by "Old Man Writing in his Study" by M.Hornstein, Toronto (ibid., no.267 with coloured tables: circa 1630).The new image, which matches the still life details, stems from Dou, dating back to ca. 1630. Compositionally speaking the items range in size and form and create a quasi-abstract construction. Artistically speaking there is a tonality created from the browns, blacks and especially grey tones in the refined nuances, a colourless colour in an exquisite chiaroscuro. Visible in the calculated reds and yellows of the feathers on the helmet and on the edge of the shield; in the minimal use of white to emphasize the glittering light; and the white of the tip of the sword is brought into sharp contrast. Artistically speaking, first class. The image also has contextual meaning. As does the opus in Budapest remind us of the "Allegory on the Art War". Only here there are no personifications with attributes depicted: the attributes fulfill ("Arma"). This is also found in Dou, who estimates, rarely and gives the images peculiarities. There are only two further pieces known, which are done in this way (of a later time). (Please refer to Sumowski 1983ff `no .307)."The 2011 x-ray images strongly indicate a pentimento located in the left side of the background of the painting. A large wheel is visible, presumably a wheel of a `small` front-loading cannon. A motif Dou Budapest`s dives into.

Flegel, Georg1563 Olmütz - 1638 Frankfurt/Main Breakfast of Grapes, Nuts, Chestnuts and Bread. Oil on oak. 38,7 x 48,6cm. Framed. Verso: panel maker`s stamp. Provenance: Private estate, Stuttgart. Assessment from Dr. Hana Seifertová on November 12th, 2004. Assessment from Dr. Anne-Dore Ketelsen-Volkhardt on January 24th, 2011. "This image of a laid table of snacks belongs to the much admired themes of Georg Flegel, who belongs to the first specialists in still lifes of the 17th Century. He varied the so-called breakfasts or snacks (Dutch Ontbijtje) throughout his oeuvre in different ways and often in many of his editions. It is in this realm that our image of Breakfast with Grapes, Nuts, Chestnuts and Bread belongs to. It represents a small snack, one which only the well-to-do society could enjoy: beside bread and butter on a white and blue decorated plate are the secretly depicted grapes in a silver bowl; white wine in a pitcher, a glass cup produced in Germany, and finally the hazelnuts displayed in an expensive Chinese bowl. Chestnuts and medlars, as well as half of a lemon (an expensive fruit at the time) are displayed in two simple tin cans. Beside the lemon is a knife with an ornamental handle. This entire image can be seen as a representation of the dining at the time." (Dr. Seifertová)."After first glance regarding the painting, the motifs and the composition, as well as the format, the image has large similarities with two other Breakfast still lifes from Georg Flegel 1566 - 1638: Breakfast with Grapes, Crayfish and Bread, oil on wood, 39 x 47cm, Monogrammed on the blade of the knife, Brotmuseum, Ulm; Large Breakfast with Fruit, oil on canvas, 40 x 48cm, private collection. Due to these similarities, it is in my opinion that "Breakfast with Grapes, Nutes and Bread" can be attributed to Georg Flegel." (Dr. Ketelsen-Volkhardt).

Ephemera – broadside issued by the artist James Ward promoting his series of lithographs of celebrated horses with ms addition to base possibly in Ward’s hand adding an addition lithograph of the King’s horse ‘Nonpareil’. Autograph – the Beatles a copy of A Hard Day’s Night LP (record still present) signed by all four Beatles to verso. McCartney has added ‘Beatles’ under his signature. Provenance: Sotheby’s sale of Rock ‘n’ Roll memorabilia August 22nd 1985 Lot 143.

Lot 25

[The Beatles] the original registration document for VW Beetle car reg. LMW 281F – the white Beetle car which is featured in the legendary photograph of the Beatles walking across the pedestrian crossing in Abbey Road which forms the front cover of the Abbey Road Album. Together with a group of documents relating to the vehicle including papers from Sotheby’s when the vehicle itself was sold. The car itself was sold by Sotheby’s in 1986 for more than £12 000 – mainly because the number plate was featured as part of the somewhat ridiculous conspiracy which still circulates that the album cover photograph proves that McCartney is dead (even though he seems to most of us as very much alive today). The theory suggested that McCartney was barefoot in a funeral procession. He is out of step with the rest of the Beatles and Lennon dressed in a white suit was clearly a religious Minister. Starr dressed in black was obviously an undertaker and Harrison dressed in denim at the back of the procession was obviously a grave digger. Where the number plate comes in is that the registration mark of ‘281F’ was actually ‘28 IF’ – ie if McCartney had been alive he would have been 28 – although he was actually 27 when the album was released.

Lot 48

Diary – The Grand Tour manuscript journal from July 4th 1817 to September 29th 1817 recording a journey through France to Switzerland and then returning through Germany and back into France. Oblong 8vo 182pp text closely written in a spidery and somewhat miniscule hand – thus a considerable amount of text. One page has a close tear but the rest is unblemished and legible throughout. A fascinating diary recording a typical early 19th c ‘Grand Tour’. The entries are exhaustive and cover a wide range of topics including museums cathedrals theatres the poor prison laundry bathing and numerous comments on hotels and the romantic scenery. He mentions Lord Byron and in particular the places in Switzerland which are mentioned in Byron’s poetry. Many other historical figures are mentioned including Charlemagne. A few miniature topographical engravings are stitched to pages as well as a coloured theological plate and a folding hand coloured heraldic plate of the arms of various cities. It is unclear as to the diarist but there is a signature ‘N [or W ?] Kinsey to one end and the name ‘Rev D Harley Chez Collier’ written at the other.

America and Canada important first part of an autograph letter from Joseph Delaplaine to a correspondent in Philadelphia dated August 21st 1817 asking the owner of a portrait of President John Adams to borrow it in order to engrave a copy for his work ‘The Repository of the Lives & Portraits of Distinguished Americans’ and also to provide a ‘ sketch or memoir of Mr Adams life...some time ago at my request Mr Adams sent to me the following facts of his life which I think proper to give you as in the event of your kindness to undertake it you may derive some assistance from them ...’ He then provides the passage which covers some two pp of the letter. The final part of this letter is missing but the memoir provided to Delaplaine by John Adams is complete and of considerable interest. The first volume of Delaplaine’s book was first published in Philadelphia in 1815. A second volume appeared in 1816 but part two of it appears not to have been published – in the present letter Delaplaine refers to his ‘heavy & expensive undertaking’. Together with a small group of America and Canada related documents including a fine coloured print of sailors attacking polar bears a ms note of the sale of lands in Florida including a ‘negro slave named Tom’ an ms document dated September 30th 1825 being a Privy Council order that Lt Col Joseph Wells and James Macauley be constituted members of the Executive Council of Upper Canada together with a related printed Act of Parliament dated 1764

Lot 79

Military – Gordon of Khartoum a small piece of wood measuring approx 10x4cm with brass plate affixed stating ‘This wood was taken by Sir Henry Rawlinson from the door of Gordon’s Palace at Khartoum 4th September 1898’. A remarkable association piece. Gordon had been killed in January 1885 – one of the most celebrated military incidents of the latter part of the 19th c. On September 2nd 1898 a well equipped British force under Kitchener destroyed the forces of Abdulla al-Taasgu the self proclaimed successor to Gordon’s killer Mahdi Muhammad Ahmad at the Battle of Omderman. Rawlinson was a Captain at that time and served on Kitchener’s personal staff. He later rose to be Field Marshal and was given the responsibility after Kitchener’s untimely death in 1916 of commanding the 4th Army in WWI – the army of civilian volunteers ‘Pals’ Regiments and those who had risen to Kitchener’s rallying cry to join up – who were cut to pieces in the first hour of the Battle of the Somme on July 1st 1916. This little sliver of wood therefore represents a remarkable association between two of the most important figures in British Military history.

Lot 100

WWI – Manfred von Richtofen – ‘The Red Baron’ Der Rote Kampfflierger first edition 1917 signed to inside cover in pencil by von Richtofen ‘Frhr v Richthofen Rittmeister’. Excessively rare. This was Richtofen’s autobiography written in October 1917 while he was recovering from a serious head injury following an engagement with Captain Donald Cunnell of 20 Squadron RFC (who was killed a few days later). Von Richtofen wrote the book on the instructions of the German propaganda division and was heavily censored and edited. He later repudiated the book saying that it was ‘too arrogant’ and that he was ‘no longer that kind of person’ but he was not able to produce a second and revised edition as he was killed the following April. We have only been able to trace one further signed copy of this book appearing at auction in the last 25 years (lot 221 Sotheby’s sale May 28th 1986)

Lot 104

WWI German intelligence manual on British Indian Army Published in German in Nov 1915 in Lille France by the AOK 6 (Armeeoberkommando = Hqs. 6thArmy) and signed off by the command’s intelligence officer Lubecke. Softcover wrapper 8 by 5.5 ins 37 pp glossy stock with 8 b&w photo plates (printed on one side only) and a folded map at the back. Condition: Some foxing to wrapper and scattered light pencil underlining in text. Binding is tight; there are no loose or unsightly pages; overall very good condition considering age and use as a field manual in a war zone. This manual which good authority holds to be very scarce contains background information photographs foreign language specimens a condensed dictionary and similar material intended to assist in the interrogation of Indian Army POWs captured by the Germans on the Western Front in France during the First World War. Key subjects mentioned in the test include: The 3rd (Lahore) and the 7th (Meerut) Divisions; the Indian Cavalry Division the Ferlsipur Brigade and its component regiments the Djallandar Brigade and its Sikh regiment; the 1st Manchester Regiment (multi-national) among many other units contributing forces to the Allied front. The manual describes the native soldiers of whom an estimated 160 000 fought in France and Belgium objectively and with knowledgeable respect for their training and fighting ability. It encourages German soldiers to treat their captives well “as they can be of good use to us in the present and the future” (p23). There is a reference to the POW camp at Zossen – Wünsdorf near Berlin where thousands of British Indian troops were imprisoned.

Lot 105

WWII – Dietrich Eckart – key founder of the Nazi Party a black armband bearing the name of Eckart. Dietrich Eckart (1868-1923) was a key founder of the Nazi Party and was highly influential on Hitler’s early thinking. He was a fellow conspirator in the Bierkeller Putsch of 1923 and along with Hitler was imprisoned in Landsberg – though he was released early because of ill health. He died shortly afterwards. Provenance: from the celebrated collection of John Horne

Lot 108

WWII – Autograph – Arno Breker – Hitler’s favourite sculptor two postcard sized photographs of him both signed across the image. Breker was responsible for many of the sculpted images which classified the Nazi regime. He died in 1991 but his work has always created considerable controversy. Provenance: from the celebrated collection of John Horne

Lot 110

WWII – Eva Braun an original snapshot photographs of Eva Braun showing her with two dogs a German Shepherd and a Scotty. She is shown full length. Housed in a silver frame featuring Nazi swastikas in turquoise enamel at each corner. Overall dimensions approx 6x4ins. Provenance: from the celebrated collection of John Horne

Lot 156

WWII – Heinrich Himmler – autographs and documents original telegram from Adolf Hitler to Anna Himmler Heinrich Himmler’s mother dated Berchtesgaden January 19th 1941 sending his heartfelt greetings on her 75th birthday

Lot 161

Lot 163

WWII – Heinrich Himmler – ephemera a printed communion certificate issued by the Roman Catholic Church with ms insertions for Himmler when he was received into the Church in 1911 when he was 11 years old. The certificate features a reproduction of an old master painting showing Christ at the Last Supper. Fraying to edges of the paper close tears and small portions torn from edges and aged creasing. Lot 164

WWII – Heinrich Himmler – ephemera fine presentation certificate on a leaf of vellum given to Himmler by the people of Quedlinburg ‘in appreciation and since gratitude for his tireless research into the home of our ancestral heritage...’ dated July 1st 1937. Written in an attractive calligraphic script in black ink highlighted in gold and signed by the Oberburgermeister of the Town. The certificate features two finely executed vignettes showing the exterior of the Cathedral at Quedlinburg and the grave of King Heinrich I. Some age creases and a few very slight blemishes to text but otherwise in generally good condition. A document of considerable interest in the history of the mysticism which surrounded the Nazis and the SS in particular. The certificate commemorates Himmler’s particular association with the town and the grave of King Heinrich I who ruled Germany from AD919-936. Himmler took a special interest in the history of his namesake and made a high profile propaganda visit to the grave of the dead King in the previous year in which he gave a seminal speech. Himmler asserted that Adolf Hitler was the earthly inheritor of the human and political spirit of the long dead King – and thus tried to convey that Nazism had its foundations in ancient history and the whole philosophy of German nationalism. Himmler also bizarrely believed that he was in fact the reincarnation of Heinrich I – and that the dead King was the founder of the Ayrian race. An extremely rare piece of historical evidence on the origins of Nazism

Lot 165

One small chip to rim with original suspension tag to verso. These were commissioned by Himmler for presentation to the Mothers of particular SS members as a mark of gratitude for their contribution to the Nazi cause – at a time when Himmler must have known that the war was effectively lost.

Lot 189

WWII – The Holocaust ‘Trau keinem Fuchs auf gruner heid und keinem Jud bei seinem eid’ [Don’t trust a fox on the green heather nor a Jew by his oath] by E Bauer. This excessively rare book is considered by far the worst anti-Semitic book every published mainly for its naked and aggressive attack on the Jews via lurid illustrations in garish colours but also because it’s author was an 18 year old girl – and of course it was produced as a children’s book. The publisher was Julius Streicher whose anti-Semitic excesses were so awful that they even enraged leading Nazis such as Goering. The book contains a total of 21 full page cartoons somewhat crudely drawn but each with a powerful message to children that the Jew was not to be trusted and the Jewish people were responsible for the ills and depravations of the German people – images include a top hated fat man walking away with a fair haired German girl with promises of trinkets – but from the look on his face with clear sexual intent on his mind. There is also the Jewish butcher selling substandard meat in his filthy shop and the Jewish accountant who swindles the hard working German farming couple. Streicher couldn’t resist a part in all of this and two of the illustrations are blatant examples of self propaganda – one showing children gathering around a public display of his vile newspaper ‘Der Sturmer’ and the other showing him in Nazi uniform being greeted by a throng of delighted children. Each illustration is accompanied by a suitably worded message written in verse so that the average German child could easily get the bed-time message. Copies of this book are naturally excessively rare on the market. At the downfall of Hitler it would not have been wise to have kept a copy and as such it remains one of the rarest books available.

Lot 270

Lot 275

WWII – The Nazi Organisation of Great Britain a remarkable group of documents relating to the Nazi Party of Great Britain – Hitler’s offshoot operation based at Cleveland Terrace in Hyde Park. The documents comprise correspondence with Miss Lydia Link of 5 Lynchcroft Gardens West Ealing dated between 1932 and 1938. Also included are two photographs – one of a group of people with Lydia at the centre which is thought to be a group of British based Nazi party members – a pendant with the Nazi swastika device is prominent at the back a photograph of Lydia flanked by four SS Officers and an invitation card inviting her to attend the terrace of the German Embassy in Carlton House to view the Coronation of George VI. A remarkable group underlining the disturbing truths that Nazis were very active in Britain.

Lot 297

India – Autograph – Jawaharlal Nehru the albums of Baron H G Von Studnitz a German journalist operating in India in the late 1930s. Included is an important typewritten letter from Nehru written from London and dated September 7th 1938 in which he comments first on his daughter’s health which prevents him from travelling far but then adds : ‘...in any event the present international situation would come in the way of my going to Germany. As you know I am not at all in sympathy with the Nazi philosophy and aims. I am grateful however to you and to the German authorities for the invitation...’ The album also includes two important typed letters of Mahadev Desai discussing Ghandi and his political views:’...I shall explain to you by just one illustration how you entirely failed to understand what Mr Ghandi said. He said ‘we have not entered upon this new experiment lightly’...you understood to mean ‘heaviness of heart’. Do you see what a cruel distortion it makes? The denial that you suggest seems to add insult to the injury... you will remember that Mr Ghandi gave you no formal interview. Elsewhere in the album is an autograph letter signed of Ernst Vom Rath together with a picture of him. It was his assassination in Paris in 1938 by a Jewish youth Herschel Grynszpan which gave the Nazis the excuse to carry out the notorious ‘Kristallnacht’. There is also a series of fine photographs of Sir Mirza Ismail in Bangalore together with a typewritten letter signed from him to Studnitz. The albums also contain a wealth of superb photographs of India leading figures shots of an ‘untouchables’ village a snake charmer a Sadhu at Chamundi Hill the preparation of elephants for a Royal ceremony and some photographs of Freda Aykroyd who inspired the wartime poems of Alun Lewis. An outstanding collection.
