KAZAKHS OF TASHKENT: Tursun Muhammad, before 1613 until 1628, AR tanka (4.38g) (Tashkent), ND, A-R3008, average strike, with ruler`s name fully legible, Very Fine, RRR. Very few examples in private hands, though a small hoard exists in a formerly Soviet museum. This is the first example I`ve seen on the market. DURRANI: Ahmad Shah, 1747-1772, AV mohur (10.83g), Shahjahanabad, AH1173 year 14, A-3090, KM-765, superb bold strike, Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated, R. DURRANI: Ahmad Shah, 1747-1772, AR rupee (11.24g), Shahjahanabad (Delhi), year 19, A-3092, KM-763, without the Hijri date, but very clear mint name and regnal year 19, lovely strike, lightly cleaned, unpublished and unreported, strong Very Fine, RRR. The reverse die is clearly the product of the Delhi mint, but the obverse die is of quite different calligraphy. Since the Durranis never approached Delhi during Ahmad Shah`s regnal year 19, there are two principal interpretations of this piece. Most likely is that it was struck just before Ahmad and his forces actually entered the city of Delhi, using a quickly engraved obverse die and an old year 19 die of the Mughal emperor Muhammad Shah. It is also possibly a later issue by the opponents of Muhammad Shah who perhaps anticipated a third conquest of Delhi by Ahmad Shah, but that never happened. The Society`s headquarters were in the Yuyuan Gardens of Shanghai. The organization was founded in the 1850s during the upheavals of the Taiping Rebellion by Liu Lichuan. He took the nien hao (reign title) of Tian Yun (heavenly movement). It was one of a number of rebel groups to arise during this period, either affiliated with or proclaiming support for the rebel Taiping administration. The name Xiao Dao ("Small Swords") refers to daggers used by warriors or martial artists in close combat. It is believed to be linked to triads. The society consisted mainly of natives from Guangdong and Fujian, including Li Shaoqing, Li Xianyun and Pan Yiguo, directors of some of the huiguan or native place associations of Shanghai. Liu Lichang was killed in February 1855. Those caught in possession of these coins were sent to trial and many were executed. This is the finest example of this rare type we have handled." BRITISH INDIA: Victoria, 1837-1901, AR medal (42.62g) (Calclutta) (1861), Pud-861.3 (42.7mm), bust of Queen Victoria left, around VICTORIA D.G. BRIT. REG. FID. DEI., where DEI is an engraver`s error for DEF / within wreath, PUNJAB / EXHIBITION / OF / ARTS, PRODUCE & / MANUFACTURE, with small ribbon below, RR. According to Puddester, the Calcutta produced the bronze medals of this type (which has DEF. rather than DEI. and is illustrated in their records), and the Calcutta mint almost certainly also struck the silver medals. The Latin word dei means "God", and def. is the abbreviation of the word that means "defender." Since dei is not an abbreviation there should not have been a period after that word.
