Mashad carpet, Khorasan, north east Persia, early 20th century, 18ft. 7in. x 12ft. 3in. 5.67m. x 3.73m. Extensive and heavy wear, particularly in the field. Slight loss to ends and selvedges. The damage to this once attractive carpet, recently removed from a large country house, reflects the fact that it was used in the dining room and thus subjected to chairs being moved back and forth from the table. Provenance: In the same family ownership since it was bought by the present owner’s grandparents in the early 1900s. Sold with all faults not subject to return.

Attractive Afghan woman’s silk and cotton costume, Original indigo dyed cotton lining, with gold metal thread embroidered detail at the base of the costume. And another Afghan woman’s costume, quilted black cotton with the front and back panels and the cuffs worked in brightly coloured wool and metal thread with velvet and metal thread panels to the underarms, both Afghanistan 20th century. A collection of five textiles comprising a Turkmen child’s green and yellow striped silk jacket edged with very narrow red and white wool cord, lined with a brown floral printed cotton edged with a brown wool braid, Afghanistan 20th century; an Eastern European costume fragment, the heavy white linen ground embroidered in black wool and coloured silks, lower border also with metal thread embroidery; right corner heavily embroidered in gold and silver coloured metal thread with a large stylised floral motif, possibly Albania late19th century 14½ in. x 17in. 37cm. x 44cm., some wear to the embroidery; time stains; a machine woven Syrian silk shawl, probably Aleppo, 20th century, 67in. x 63in. 170cm. x 160cm. fringed all the way round, some stains, together with an Indian silk and metal thread stole; 20th century, bleached areas; and a modern Indian silk and metal thread machine woven hanging, worked with rows of brightly coloured birds and small cavorting elephants among flowers and foliage. .42½ in. x 43½ in. 108in. x 110in. Rare Handira woman’s shawl, Beni Qarain, Middle Atlas region, Morocco, 20th century, 35in. x 95 89m. x 241m. Several small holes. Note these shawls are reversible, with flatweave design on one side and ‘piled’ stripes on the other.

A charming and rare Shahsavan silk shamdan (miniature child’s khorjin) in plainweave, top bands of each bag and the bridge appliquéd with a brocaded silk and metal thread braid worked with flowers and foliage; one bag with its original indigo silk cord and silk and metal thread tassel and plaited ‘stopper’, north west Persia, late 19th/early 20th century. 23in. x 8in., 59cm. x 20cm. Woven in one piece with the face pattern continuing verso. Shattering to the silk braid on the bridge; a few time stains. Note: An almost identical shamdan was offered in these Rooms, 13th December 2007, Lot 1335.
