Cole, mid 18th century The 6 inch square plate fitted with plain angled gnomen set at circa 50 degrees and centred with a foliate engraved and hatched eight point compass rose annotated N, NE, E, SE, S, SW and NW within herringbone bordered inner track, the middle track with quarter hour divisions, the outer track with Roman numeral chapters IIII-XII-VIII, signed B. Cole fecit between IIII and VIII and minute divisions to outer edge, the angles drilled for screw mounting. A Benjamin Cole is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as being Free of the Clockmakers Company in 1733.

Marti et Cie, MEDAILLE DE BRONZE roundel and stamped 5277 to backplate, the dial cast as a shield with concentric geometric and laurel band convex centre within chapter ring applied with raised black Roman numerals, the case with seated cherub surmount to the elaborate double scroll surmount above lotus leaf moulded break-arch cornice and female terms flanking dial, the sides applied with stylised seated winged griffin supports, the break-fronted wide plinth base with geometric mouldings and inset with relief cast figural frieze panels and with stalks to the front angles, on block feet with central cartouche between and flanked by scroll pierced side supports, 41cm (16ins) high.

Naval General Service Medal 1793 -1840 with three clasps for Thomas Durnell private of the Royal Marines with clasps for Java, Basque Roads, and Trafalgar. Naming impressed. During the battle of Trafalgar Durnell was onboard The Temeraire 98 gun, second ship in Nelson`s column behind the Victory. The Temeraire under the command of Captain Eliab Harvey was the first ship to break through the enemy lines during the battle. She was subject to heavy fighting with six ships before being trapped between two enemy ships Redoutable and Fougueux whilst trying to defend the Victory. After heavy fighting with small arms and grenade the crew of The Temeraire succeeded in boarding both ships eventually forcing the enemy to surrender. Following this action both the Victory and Temeraire engaged the Dumanoir and Formidable during the final stages of the battle. Following 1805 Durnell was onboard the Illustrious during the Battle of Basque Roads in 1809 and the Invasion of Java 1811. He died in Greenwich Hospital 7th May 1853.
