[GEORGE VI]: (1895-1952) King of the United Kingdom 1936-52. An electroplate silver twin handled trophy, ornately engraved with floral patterns and an inscription 'H. W. S. S. D. M. Tuckfield, presented by Prince Albert', and date 7th June 1919. With spiral handles and tapered circular cup down to a circular base. Some age wear to the rim, otherwise VG. Prince Albert presented the trophy to a successful competitor at the sports meeting of the Hospital Welfare Society for Lewisham, Deptford and Greenwich.

*All Eleven of England v Australians 1884. Original silk scorecard for the match played on the 3rd-5th July 1884 at the St. John’s Ground, Fartown, Huddersfield. The scorecard, printed onto the silk in black print, by George Richards of Nottingham. Odd minor faults otherwise in very good condition. Rare The Australians managed to draw the game. The Eleven of England scoring 453 runs in their only innings, Australia being bowled out for 175 in their first innings and finishing on 124-7 in their second and that off 110 overs of bowling. For England Scotton made 134, Attewell 84, Grimshaw 77, Hirst 71. Scott top scored for the Australians with 50 in the 2nd innings. Attewell took ten wickets in the match
*England v Australia 1981. Official scorecard for the ‘famous’ third Test match, England v Australia, Headingley 1981. Ian Botham and Bob Willis’s match. England followed on 227 runs behind and were soon 135-7 in their second innings. Botham and Dilley then put together a stand of 117. Botham finished up with 149no and Dilley 56. Australia needed 130 to win. Australia at 56-2 seemed favourites to win the game, however Willis with 8-43 won the game for England by 18 runs. Fully printed end of match details. Excellent condition

Middlesex v Essex, Lord’s, 27th-29th July 1911. Cricket ball, presented to Hearne, with silver metal band around ball with inscription ‘J.W. Hearne, ‘Hat Trick’, Middlesex v Essex, 6 wickets for 17 runs’. Good condition Hearne took the hat trick in the Essex first innings removing H.A. Carpenter, LBW, C.P. McGahey, bowled and K.L. Gibson LBW. He also took the wickets of P.A. Perrin, J.R. Freeman and B. Tremlin to give him innings figures of ten overs, four maidens, six wickets for 17 runs as Essex were bowled out for 78. Middlesex won the match by an innings and 211 runs
‘What’s Cook-In?-Plenty-In Brisbane!’. M.C.C. tour of Australia 1946/47. Large and impressive original pen and ink caricature/ cartoon newspaper artwork, highlighted with colour, for ‘The Herald’, Australian newspaper by artist Samuel Wells. The cartoon depicts excellent images relating to the days tour match between Queensland and M.C.C. in Brisbane, November 1946, in the match G.G. Cook scored 169no and Colin McCool took 6-105 in the first two innings. The cartoon depicts various scenes where Cook’s are depicted, serving a meal, hanging onto a frightened English lions tail and the Australian selectors shown wearing cooks hats. Also depicts McCool and Tallon as the ‘Prickly Pair’, following Tallon stumping three batsman and taking a catch off McCool’s bowling. Players featured in the artwork include Hutton, Washbrook, Tallon, McCool, Gibb etc. The cartoon, signed by Wells, measures 22.5”x15.5”. Dated to label 25th November 1946. Excellent image. Some nicks and tears to borders otherwise in good condition
‘Australia Day. Australia Will be there!’. M.C.C. tour of Australia 1954/55. Impressive original pen and ink caricature/ cartoon newspaper artwork, highlighted with colour, for an Australian newspaper by artist Samuel Wells. The cartoon features various themes based around ‘Australia Day’, which fell during the Australia v M.C.C. Test match played at Adelaide in 1955. ‘In Adelaide things were up and down, it looked all down until Maddocks and Johnson turned the day’. ‘Show Day’, ‘Maddocks, the Headmaster with 69, taught the Boys a lesson’, ‘Tale Day’, ‘the Kanger’s tails wagging’, ‘J-Day’, Johnson Day, ‘May Day Too!’. Peter May took five catches, ‘Short Day’. ‘Thing we liked best was Hutton’s shorts- wish others would get the urge to wear’ em!’. Players featured in the artwork include Johnson, Maddocks, J. Ryder, Bradman, May etc. The cartoon, signed by Wells, measures 14”x17.5”. Excellent image. G
‘The (Red) Pathfinder. Leeds’. Australian tour of England 1964. Impressive original pen and ink caricature/ cartoon newspaper artwork for The Age, Australian newspaper by artist Samuel Wells. The cartoon features the 3rd Test match at Leeds. Ian Redpath (58no) and Brian Booth (12no) won the match for Australia, winning by seven wickets. They also refer to Fred Titmus’s match figures of 77 overs, 43 maidens, 6 wickets for 94 runs!. ‘Feature of the match was the ‘Titmouses’s unplayable bowling 19 maidens (2nd innings) He must be going to open a girls school’. Cricket to half of the artwork and horse racing to the other half. The cartoon, signed by Wells, undated, measures 14.5”x21”. Excellent image. G
`The Saturday Match`. Hugh De Selincourt. Exquisite original watercolour artwork by artist James Thorpe produced for the dust wrapper of the cricket book `The Saturday Match`, a timeless tale of village cricket, written by De Selincourt and published in 1937 by Dent of London. The watercolour shows a village match scene of a batsman walking out to bat in blue and white hooped cap with fellow players, pavilion, scoreboard, club flag, tents, spectators and trees to borders. Titles in black ink to main image and spine paper. Signed by Thorpe to lower right hand corner with measurement and notes handwritten to outer plain borders. The watercolour measures 9.25"x10.5"and overall with borders 12"x16". A truly unique piece of artwork by Thorpe. G/VG Sold with a first edition 1937 copy of the `The Saturday Match` with original dustwrapper showing the published artwork. Hugh De Selincourt (1878-1951) was an English author and journalist who worked as a journalist, for the Star and the Observer until 1914, and is chiefly remembered today for his timeless tale of village cricket, `The Cricket Match` published in 1924, which stands alongside A. G. Macdonell`s `England, Their England` as one of the classic accounts of village cricket in English literature. The fictional village of Tillingfold was a recurring element in De Selincourt`s work, and was based on his own village of Storrington at the foot of the South Downs. ‘The Saturday Match’ (1937) and ‘Gauvinier Takes to Bowls’ (1948) were among de Selincourt`s final books before his death in 1951 James Henry Thorpe (1876-1949) was a founder member of the London Sketch Club, where he numbered fellow cricket enthusiast Frank Reynolds among his numerous circle. Besides working as an illustrator on several books, many cricket related, and magazines including `Punch` he also wrote on contemporary art, and published an instructional cricket book `A Cricket Bag` in 1929 and an autobiography `Happy Days` in 1933.

Original large pen and ink, highlighted with colour, caricature/ cartoon artwork showing four boys playing cricket in the park, a further game of football is being played in the background. to centre front a boy wearing a cap with a white rose, Yorkshire scarf and holding a newspaper with banner headline ‘Yorkshire Again!’ is merrily whistling ‘On Ilkla Moor Baht’at’. The caption, to lower border reads ‘The Swankpot!. Just because e’s got an Auntie who lives in Bradford....’. Excellent image. Drawn on artists card and signed by artist Lee, to lower border. Dated to verso ‘29th August 1946’. The artwork, produced for the London Evening News, measures 10.5”x15” Some staining to, mainly, the right hand border of artwork otherwise in good condition Joseph Lee worked for Strand Magazine and Pall Mall Gazette before joining the Sunday Express. From 1934 to 1966 Lee worked for the London Evening News

Excellent complete collection of sixty nine original colour lithographs of cricketers, the first forty seven as listed by John Arlott and the second twenty two as listed by J.W. Goldman, both in 1953 and published in Russell March’s book, ‘The Cricketers of Vanity Fair’. The images, from the first list are Grace, Spofforth, Lord Harris, Bonnor, A.Lyttelton, Read, Philipson, Hornby, Stoddart, Woods, Lord Hawke, Fry, Baldwin, 6th Earl of Dartmouth, Viscount Curzon, Mitchel, Clarke, McLean, Ranjitsinhji, Wynyard, E. Lyttelton, Jessop, N.G. An additional lithograph of Leslie Ward ‘Spy’ is sold with this lot. The lithographs are not mounted but are framed and glazed in gilt frames, with the exception of eight lithographs which are mounted. Some faults noted, minor staining to border of the images of Woods, Mitchell, Baldwin, Lucas, Bonnor, Hornby, Stoddart, Marsham and Ponsonby-Fane, wrinkling and light fading to Hobbs, age toning to Fry, small tear/damage to Spencer-Lyttleton, irregular trimming of borders to the Dartmouth lithograph, a few odd minor faults including wrinkling to the odd image otherwise in good condition. The lithograph of the rarer E.W. Dillon has very minor staining to lower border edge plus very minor wrinkling. Qty 70

Original single page supplement giving full and extensive coverage of the ‘Great International Prize Fight’, John Heenan v Tom Sayers, fought near Farnborough on the 17th April 1860. The fight lasted 2 hours, 6 minutes and resulted in a draw. Full coverage of the fight to both sides of the supplement. Some minor damage to the paper otherwise in good condition.
