Hooper, Jim Koevoet 18x25cm Hardcover Quarto (180x252mm) in Good+ condition, bound in the original grey cloth covered boards with white titles to the spine, pictorial dust wrapper in good condition with only one small tear and slightly crushed paper at the top right corner of the front. Three preliminary and 236 pages of text, including glossary, no index; colour and black and white illustrations are scattered throughout the text. Koevoet, pronounced (koo-foot) is an Afrikaans word meaning ‹¨«crowbar‹¨«and is the name by which the South West Africa Police Counter-insurgency Unit was commonly known. Also known as ‹¨«Operation K‹¨« it was a paramilitary-trained police counter insurgency unit which was formed during the South-West African (now known as Namibia) struggle between communist-backed SWAPO insurgents and the South African backed establishment. The unit was considered to be one of the most effective fighting units deployed against the SWAPO guerillas. The name ‹¨«Koevoet‹¨« was applied to the unit for its ability to pry out insurgents from amongst the civilian population. It unfortunately gained a reputation for brutality against civilians, as a result. The unit was comprised of about 900 Black Ovambos and 300 White officers and NCO‹¨«s. The latter were drawn from the South-West African or South-African Police Forces. Skilled trackers, drawn from the local population were also hired to ferret out insurgents. Jim Hooper was the first journalist ever to have been given unrestricted access to the unit. When he was given permission to accompany Koevoet units on operations, he was completely unprepared for the vicious guerilla war which he found raging in the dense bush of northern Namibia and Angola. Meyer, Dr. Hans Across East African Glaciers: an Account of the First Ascent of Kilimanjaro 18x25cm A Hardcover Quarto (180x248mm) book in a rather battered library binding, but with the contents in exceptionally good condition; 20 preliminary pages plus 404 pages of text including detailed appendices on the geology, geography, selected flora and insects of the region, and an index; chromolithographed frontispiece, 8 tipped in photographs, 12 photogravure plates and 19 line drawings in the text; 3 coloured fold-out maps. The frontispiece and eight photographs were printed in Germany. There are small library stamps on the front inner end-paper, the back of the frontispiece and the first page of the preface. Regarded by many as the most important book on mountaineering in Africa. Translated from the German by E.H.S. Calder, the book documents the first undisputed ascent of Kibo Peak, the highest point in Africa. Mount Kilimanjaro has three peaks, Shira, Mawenzi and Kibo, the latter being the highest. Dr. Meyer was a geologist and experienced climber who made several trips to the Kilimanjaro region between 1887 and 1889, culminating in his successful ascent to the Kibo peak. In 1887, during his first attempt to climb Kilimanjaro, Meyer reached the base of Kibo, but had to turn back, as he did not have the equipment necessary to handle the deep snow and ice of the peak. The following year, Meyer planned another attempt with the cartographer Oscar Baumann, but the mission was aborted due to an Arab revolt. In 1889, however, Meyer returned to Kilimanjaro with the celebrated Austrian mountaineer, Ludwig Purtscheller, for another attempt. Their climbing team included two local headmen, nine porters, a cook, and a guide. Meyer and Purtscheller finally reached the summit on the southern rim of the crater on Purtscheller`s 40th birthday, October 6, 1889. Meyer named this summit `Kaiser Wilhelm Spitze` (now known as Uhuru Point). In Meyer`s honour, the highest summit of Mawenzi is still known as Hans Meyer Peak. The summit of Kibo wouldn`t be climbed again until 20 years later. Meyer`s eventual success has been attributed to his recognition that the greatest obstacle to achieving the summit was the lack of food in the upper regions. In his final climb he established several camps on the mountain, and was able to make a number of attempts at reaching the summit without descending to the base. This is a lively and highly readable account of the expedition. Good London George Philip and Son 1891 Click here to view further details and images and to bid

Williamson (Graham) RICHTERSVELD - THE ENCHANTED WILDERNESS 310mm x 274mm x 24mm Foreword by Sir David Attenborough. 258 pp. Black Cloth Hardcover with Gilt title to spine and DW. Beautifully illustrated in colour. Illustrated end-papers. `Located in the north west corner, with the Orange River as its northern boundary, the Richtersveld is South Africa`s only true desert. This all encompassing natural history work vividly describes the landscape of this area - from its great sand plains to the rugged mountains that change dramatically with the varying light of day and seasons of the year. Original thoughts and observations fill the chapters on the plants, where the author brings habitats, pollination, flowers and evolution to life. These sections are highly illustrated and a checklist of more than 1700 plants is also included. Further chapters cover the fossil sites, the weather and the geology - with its ancient rocks and jagged mountains dating back more than 2000 million years. The Richtersveld is also home to the last remaining traditional nomadic herders in South Africa, who are sympathetically described and photographed. The epilogue discusses the environmental status of the Richtersveld from pre-historic times to the present, and puts the onslaught by man on this fragile ecosystem into perspective. Author Graham Williamson has created an all encompassing work: a guide to tempt the traveller; a source book on the history of the people and the geology of the area; and an illustrated reference work of the flora and fauna of this enchanted African wilderness`. Smith, Robert C; D G Pollard Rhodesia. A postal history - its stamps, posts and telegraphs (with 1970 supplement and 1980 Rhodesia Stamp Catalogue) 250 x 190; 245 x 180; 220 x 150 Despite chipping and rubbing, there is only minor loss to the dustjacket of the main item in this lot. The scarlet simulated leather boards, gilt to the spine, are very good. There is some paper loss to the front paste-down and the other endpapers are sunned at the edges. The 453 pp of illustrated text and appendixes are printed on coated paper and are very good. The v + 62 pp illustrated supplement is on even better paper and is unmarked and undiscoloured. The 2-col card wraps are rubbed along the spine, back and front. The wrappers of the 141 pp sewn-section flat-back catalogue are also rubbed but the main image panels are clear. In colour throughout, this is a generally excellent compilation and production, but the printer and repro house apologise on a sticker at the front for the poor reproduction of colour and perforation definition and four of the pages, and enclose a correction sheet thata makes the perforations clear - what service! This attractive small collection does justice to this short-lived country`s brightly designed and well-printed postal material.
