The locomotive with two figures of Mercury showing the way, Mercury’s hand on the clock dial. SIMEON STAFFORD (b. 1956) Unframed, signed and dated 2006, oil on board. Naive busy beach seascape with figures in and around the sea with beach huts and sailing boats. Indistinctly inscribed verso, `. Cornwall`. Stafford greatly influenced by L.S. Lowry, a friend of the family, moved to Cornwall in 1996. He has developed a number of recurring motifs in his work, which can be looked out for, such as `Dot`, a young girl cartwheeling across the canvas (his aunt as a child), `Ruby`, a young girl with pigtails and sometimes a man with red stripy trousers leading a small boy by the hand (Simeon with his son). Previously exhibiting at the R.A. in 2001, Simeon also has his work in the Queen`s private collection. 76cm x 101.5cm. Provenance: Purchased directly from the artist.(ARR)

RALPH FLETCHER SEYMOUR (1876 - 1966) Framed, signed and dated 1965, American oil on canvas. Bust of a dark haired woman in magenta ruffled dress. Seymour is best known for his publishing firm, and his illustrations for limited edition publications of John Keats` `The Eve of St Agnes` in 1900, John Milton`s `Ode on the Morning of Christ`s Nativity` in 1901 amongst other works of Percy Bysshe Shelley and William Blake. 60cm x 49cm.

DANIEL MACLISE R.A. (1806 - 1870) Framed, unsigned, watercolour on paper, mid 19th Century, study for The Veiled Prophet of Khorassan. Three other variations of this piece by Maclise are on display at the Victoria & Albert Museum. The subject matter is taken from the scene `Mokanna unveiling to Zeliea`, from the first poetic tale in THOMAS MOORE`s (1779 - 1852) book, `Lalla Rookh`, published 1817, which narrates the story of Hakim ben Allah, founder of an Arabic sect in the 18th Century; veiled to cover his wartime disfigurements. The finished painting is believed to be Maclise`s first exhibit at the R.A., in 1833, when Lalla Rookh was also on display at the British Institute. 42cm x 32.5cm.

A collection of letters by Welsh painter AUGUSTUS JOHN (1878 - 1961) Ten are signed `Augustus John`, two signed `Augustus`, and one unsigned, all written to art collector, Stephen Teltch, dated between February 1960 and August 1961. The content relates to both his own work and that of Teltch`s `God-child`, whom Teltch has asked him to view. Together with a letter by DORELIA JOHN (1881 - 1969) One page, signed, written also to Stephen Teltch, apologising for not thanking him for the brandy he sent John and herself and a letter by English painter JOSETTE JONES (1894 - 1989) Three pages, signed `Jo`, written to `Emo`, apologising for a previous letter from Augustus. Josette was a pupil of both Augustus John and Walter Sickert, and an unframed, photograph of Augustus John beside his self portrait on exhibition at the Tooth Gallery. Inscribed on label verso his obituary. Stamped twice verso by Keystone Press agency Ltd.

THOMAS BUSH HARDY R.B.A. (1842 - 1897) Framed, signed and dated 1890, watercolour on paper. Maritime seascape with various vessels on stormy waters, with figures on pier beyond. Inscribed in artist`s hand `Off Yarmouth`. Hardy born in Sheffield, travelled globally, to Italy and Holland, which is notable in his work. He exhibited with the R.A., R.B.A., R.H.A., R.I., R.O.I. and R.W.S. 25.5cm x 37cm.

Circle of GEORGE ROMNEY (1734 - 1802) Framed, unsigned, red pencil and brown wash on paper. A study of a two classical nude figures with raised arms. Inscribed on label verso `Geo Romney - Dido & Aeneas. c.1798`. Dido and Aeneas is an opera written by English Baroque composer, Henry Purcell. It is a story of Dido`s despair at the departure of her love, the Trojan Aeneas, and her resultant death. Provenance: Ex- collection of Grindley & Palmer, Liverpool. See label verso. Together with, circle of PAUL SANDBY R.A. (1730 - 1809) Framed, initialled and dated `PS. 1781`, watercolour and brown ink on paper,.depicting an old woman selling her wares to a young boy and girl. (2) 30.5cm x 23.5cm and 22cm x 18cm.

After MICHELANGELO (1475 - 1564) Framed, unsigned miniature on ivory, showing Leda and the Swan with an ivory and mother of pearl frame. Indistinctly inscribed verso. Composition is reminiscent of Michaelangelo`s interpretation of the Greek myth repeatedly portrayed through history in both paintings and literature. The myth tells of Zeus`s seduction and rape of Leda, whilst disguised as a swan. Both Leonardo and Michaelangelo painted scenes of the seduction although both have been lost or destroyed and remain only through copies, such as that by Peter Paul Rubens (1577 - 1640) painted c.1598.
