Offered with 3 worn news cuttings, 1 with typed transcript entitled “Honour to a Hove Hero” and published in The Brighton Herald relating to local lad, Air Mechanic H V Robinson, who had been awarded the Albert Medal 1st Class (see note); a copy Home Office letter 18th June 1918 relating to Robinson’s investiture at Buckingham Palace and a note from Buckingham Palace “The Private Secretary is commanded by the King to acknowledge the receipt of Mrs Robinson’s letter and inform her that it has been transmitted to the Minister for Pensions 12.9.23", its envelope addressed to Mrs Sophia Robinson, 7 Shakespeare Street, Hove. Plate. Note: 20th December 1917 - Five airships left Polegate Airship Station, near Eastbourne, on patrol when bad visibility forced them to land, (2 near Beachy Head, 2 at Jevington and 1 near Horsham). During the evening a gale sprang up and it was decided to get the vessels back to Polegate. With visibility still poor the pilot from one of the Beachy Head airships mistook the lights at Jevington for the aerodrome and tried to land colliding with one of the Jevington ships. Both Airships burst into flame, the landing pilot was killed and 2 remaining crew members seriously injured. Air Mechanic 1st Grade Harold Victor Robinson and Air Mechanic 2nd Grade E E Steer, extricated the pilot and the two injured crew-members, helped them to a place of safety before returning to the burning ship where they detached live bombs, knowing that they may well explode at any time, and carried them away from the flames, the heat from these bombs blistering their hands. For this action Robinson and Steer were each awarded the Albert Medal 1st Class. A testimonial fund was set up which produced £103.8.0d for Robinson, and by his own choice he would be presented with a gold watch, suitably inscribed, and War Bonds for £80, which, when the time came, would enable him to start in business as a motor mechanic. Boy mechanic E E Steer became Aircraftman 1st Class and died on 24th August 1921 whilst aboard the R38 which crashed near Hull killing 44 of her crew. See Plate 8

Lot 456

A most interesting R.F.C. group of three to Squadron Leader Rollo Amyatt de Haga Haig. Comprising: A.F.C., B.W.M and Victory (the last two named Lieut. R.A. De H Haig RFC), GVF. Note: Rollo Amyatt De Haga Haig, born Newcastle 1896, originally served with the Royal Garrison Artillery before transferring to the R.F.C. in 1916 after which he saw action in France. Following the war Haig became a test pilot based at Martlesham and in 1923 was in command of the Experimental Section of the Royal Aircraft Establishment. He gave a demonstration in flying at the RAF Pageant at Hendon in the same year much to the appreciation of the crowds in attendance. In December 1924 he was recommended for the Air Force Cross which was gazetted in the 1925 New Year Honours list, the recommendation stating “This officer has been in command of the Experimental Section, Royal Aircraft Establishment, since April 1923 and during this period, in spite of heavy administrative and technical work, he has constantly carried out his flying duties with courage and enthusiasm. Invariably he himself flies for the first time all experimental types and all aeroplanes fitted with new experimental equipment and apparatus, and by his indifference to all consideration of personal risk, he has set a splendid example of courage and devotion to duty.” In 1925 Haig became the first aviator to drop in a de Havilland DH53 Hummingbird from the airship R33, to fly alongside and then to return to the airship by means of hooking on via a trapeze type attachment, turning the R33 into something of an aircraft carrier (the British Pathe News website shows a short film of the event including an excellent shot of a damaged propeller from one attempt). Haig left the RAF in 1926 to join Wm Beardmore & Co as test pilot, here he worked on the development of the Monospar scheme and during the 1920’s Haig took out several patents relating to improvements in aircraft. In 1936 Haig purchased a fishing vessel with a view to converting it to a yacht. With his business associate E.R. Lambton on board the two left Plymouth on 10th November to make for Southampton in a stiff breeze. A little way from Plymouth a gust of wind caught the foresail and Haig was knocked overboard; despite the efforts of Lambton, who returned to Plymouth to raise the alarm, a small group of motor launches and a flying boat could not locate him and he was not seen again. See Plate 8
