"St Andrews Union Club Rules and Regulations with Alphabetical List of Members booklet- 1871"– rare proof copy with handwritten amendments before going to print - in the original plain pink paper wrappers publ`d by Fifes Herald Office Cupar Fife - comprises 8 pages rules et al and 20p listing the members - one of the main conditions for new members to join Union club, one had to be a member of The Royal & Ancient Golf Club, St Andrews and every gentleman member of The R & A automatically came members on the payment of the entrance money and subscription. The club was formed in 1835 by Sir Hugh Lyon Playfair (1785-1861) one of the most prominent figures in St Andrews during the 19th century. Following a career in the Honourable East India Company`s Bengal Army, he returned home to St Andrews in 1832. In 1835 he founded the Union Club and set up the Union Parlour as a clubhouse facility for golfers. His efforts, in turn, led to the construction of The Royal and Ancient Clubhouse Note: See Mullocks Auction April 2013 – lot 813 when an earlier edition 1861 realised £650 which at that time did not include the list of members.
