Two English delftware plates, circa 1750, the first, probably Bristol, painted in blue and manganese with a central Chinese house inside a `cracked ice' border reserved with three panels of houses; the second, probably Liverpool, painted in blue with a central jardiniere of flowers, each approx. 22.5cm.diameter.
A rare white-glazed English delftware sauceboat mid 18th century, probably Bristol or Liverpool, the generous form raised on three paw feet, the handle formed as a mythical cat-like beast, 19cm across. This footed shape, derived from silver, is rare in delftware. A similar example with a plain strap handle is in the collection at Williamsburg, and illustrated in John C Austin's catalogue, no.383.
A good Liverpool delftware two-handled sauceboat mid 18th century, the interior painted in blue with birds perched on sprays of Oriental flowers, the exterior with peony sprays, the handles modelled as foxes perched on rims decorated with diaper panels, 20.4cm across. Cf. Michael Archer, Delftware in the Fitzwilliam Museum, no. G15 for an identical example. The shape is believed to have derived from silver, and similar examples are known in St Cloud porcelain.
A pair of Liverpool delftware woodblock printed tiles, c.1756, printed in blue by John Sadler, one with a man walking a dog beside an English inn, the other with two figures among Italianate ruins with a Classical statue, each within an octagonal panel edged by foliate scrolls, the corners with floral mons motifs, 13cm. AN ENGLISH DELFTWARE BOWL, CHARGER AND TWO PLATES, LONDON AND PROBABLY LIVERPOOL all painted in cobalt, the bowl with a landscape and diaper border to the interior and large rose and peony sprays to the exterior, the dish and plates with chinoiserie landscapes, the former with an angler, dish 34cm diam, c1770 A plate of the same pattern as one in the present lot, tentatively attributed to Liverpool is illustrated Britton (F), English Delftware in the Bristol Collection, 1982, fig 12.37. That example is marked with the figure 11 within the footrim; the present plate is similarly marked but with the numeral 5. ++Apart from a spot of flaking on the rim of the dish at 9 o`clock, all in very good condition, free from cracks, chips or extensive flaking
A rare pair of delft blue and white Wall Pockets, probably Liverpool, c.1770, each moulded with a girl's head emblematic of spring, flanked by tulips and saplings, bordered by 'C' scrolls above an imp mask, painted '4', some chips, 21cm (2) Literature: For similar examples see Frank Britton, op. cit. 'English Delftware in the Bristol Collection' 1982, pp. 7-17 and 7-19. CONDITION REPORT: One has a large chip and loss to bottom point. Both have losses to rim above lady's head, on one it is quite substantial loss. Crazing. Losses and chips to glaze throughout both. See additional images (available upon request).
A Liverpool delftware apothecary or pill slab, 2nd half 18th century, of octagonal form, painted in blue with the arms of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries, the motto `Opiferque Per Orbem Dicor` picked out in manganese, the top pierced with two suspension holes, 27cm. Cf. Jonathan Horne, 2002, Catalogue No. 02/11 for a similar example.
