Old Clocks & Watches AND THEIR MAKERS as working in Paris circa 1700-50. Britten notes a fine boulle-work bracket clock at the Pal de Pau, Paris; also a watch with six hour dial in the Gelis Collection and a repeating watch in the Ilbert Collection. Condition Report: Please not amendment to the report below (in block capitals) 23/02/2023. Movement is complete and appears essentially all original including the escapement although the crutch and pendulum are replacements. THE TRAINS HAVE BEEN RE-PINIONED USING THE ORIGINAL WHEELS; THIS REPAIR WAS TRADITIONALLY DONE TO ADDRESS PINION WEAR. The strike train second wheel, hammer pin wheel and fly are currently out of the movement but are present and appear undamaged. The under dial work is present for both motionwork and strike release. Once the detached elements are put back there is nothing to suggest movement that the movement wouldn't run (although the integrity of the strike mainspring has not been tested). The movement is generally a little dirty/neglected so a clean/service is required. The dial is in fine original condition retaining old gilding with a nice rich tone which would seem to only require a wash. The XII numeral cartouche and the name plate have some very light hairline cracks and the VII numeral is currently detached but undamaged. The hands have light oxidation. The case is in very good original condition but is presently very dusty/dirty. There is overall light lifting and movement to the brass marquetry but with surprisingly few losses. A couple of small pieces have been 'caught' hence are lifted and bent but overall the veneers are in good untouched condition and are very intact. The inside surface of the rear door has slight movement/cracking down the centre causing a couple of tiny losses to the shell but none to the brass. The inside base panel is missing a couple of wooden 'tiles' but the all the brass ones are present. The mounts are all present and are very nice quality. They are in good condition retaining old gilding with patchy oxidation/dirt. The bracket is a perfect fit for the clock but the marquetry is contra-parti and differs a little in style from the rest of the case. These is more significant lifting as well as some localised replacements and historic pinning. The mounts are in similar condition but perhaps slightly more discolouration and degradation of the gilding than those on the clock.Clock has later pendulum and a winder but no case key. Condition Report Disclaimer

An extremely rare late 18th century weight driven walnut-cased floor standing regulatorHenry Ward, BlandfordThe obelisk-form case with shallow pointed arched top over tapering sides to an upright rectangular base on a plinth with moulded lip, the circular dial aperture set into the front of the full-width hinged door. The 9-inch one-piece engraved silvered dial with curved aperture to show the minutes via a rotating minute ring with Arabic fives read against a tapering blued steel pointer, below the minute aperture sit two engraved subsidiaries, to the left is a 24-hour dial with Roman hours marked in three hour intervals marked to the nearest quarter of an hour (i.e. four divisions per hour) read by a simple blued steel tapering hand; to the right hand side is a twice 0-60 second subsidiary dial, marked in individual seconds and named every ten, again read via a simple blued steel tapering pointer. The weight driven movement with unique inverted truncated pyramid shaped backplate (suggestive of a parallelogon) secured directly on to the back of the dial via three 7cms (2.75ins) long turned pillars, the single going train consisting of two large (c.13cms (5ins)) finely cut wheels with screwed collets and eight-leaf pinions driving a 7.5cms (3ins) 'scape wheel with 60 pins. The steel impulse and exit pallets are set directly on the pendulum rod. The pendulum is set on a substantial brass bracket mounted on the walnut block, and is constructed in three parts - two steel arms centred by a zinc core, of octagonal section, set at the upper end with a pair of steel pallets mounted on a brass block, the lower end terminating in a very heavy spherical brass bob with additional auxiliary timing weight (the largest bob approximately 13cms (5ins) in diameter and weighing approximately 10.5kg (approx 23lbs). 1.78m (5ft 10ins) high. Footnotes:Henry Ward was born around 1776; it is unknown where he was born, though he would spend most of his working life in Blandford, Dorset. However, his brother Richard, described as a watchmaker, lived in Middlesex. The details of his early career remain unknown, though, in 1797 a Henry Ward is listed in the Charing Church warden's book as having been involved with the upkeep of the clock for that year. Unlike many of the other listed clockmakers, his place of residence is not recorded. In 1804, Henry Ward of Blandford supplied and installed a turret clock to Milton Abbey, though the actual movement appears to have been manufactured by John Thwaites in London. This, along with his brother's place of residence and the Charing Church records, suggests Ward may have at least been apprenticed in London. In 1805 he received his first of four awards from the Royal Society of Arts, in the form of 15 guineas for a new simplified striking system. This system was noticeably different from other striking systems, as it did away with a separate striking train, instead using the pendulum to power the hammer via front plate levers: The hammer and the pallets are joined together with a rack; a lever is attached to the pallets and once the clock is striking, the pallet lever moves the rack tooth by tooth. Each movement of the rack connects with the hammer tail and causes a blow to be sounded. Ward notes that he uses this system with a deadbeat escapement. Interestingly Edmund Beckett Denison, later Lord Grimthorpe, in his Rudimentary Treatise On Clocks, Watches, & Bells For Public Purposes advocated for a crutch-less escapement. He noted that an escapement which had the pallets on the pendulum would be much more effect, though he did say that this was 'hardly possible [...] to manage behind a clock of regulator size.'Less than two years later Ward had received another award from the society, this time in the form of a silver medal, for his compensation pendulum. This pendulum consisted of two hammered iron rods on either side of a zinc rod, all secured by several screws along the length of the rods. These screws acted as adjustment, according to Ward; unscrewing the screw by one thread, would result in an alteration of the clock's going by about one quarter of one second per day. Ward was quite thorough in his experimentation, making up two pendulums, one using un-hammered iron and the other with half-hammered iron, and observing the change in their respective timekeeping based on the temperature. He even installed a rudimentary heat lamp in each clock case, to be able to test increases in temperature without being dependent on the weather. He eventually refined his pendulum to have chamfered edges and hammered iron rods, both of which he claimed further stabilised the clock's rate. This same year, he also received 10 guineas from the Society, for his invention of a locking crank mechanism for telegraph machines. His final prize from the society would come in 1814, in the form of another silver medal and five guineas for a simplified equation of time complication. This manifested itself as a minute dial with two hands; one hand recorded mean time, and the other tracked solar time. Ward explained in his submission to the Society that he thought it was essential to depict solar time, as the difference between it and mean time could be as much as -14/+16 minutes depending on the day of the year. That this complication was uncommon on standard domestic clocks, Ward ascribed to the cost, expertise, and skill of manufacture necessary. He viewed his complication, which relied on a cam, quadrant rack and a few additional wheels, as simplified and easier to make, with the hope that it would be adopted by more manufacturers. Unfortunately, Ward would die less than a year later, on 23rd February 1815. He is listed in the Blandford Forum burial records for 5th March of that year. Interestingly, he is listed as 'Henry, Ward Snr' opening up the possibility that a son of the same name was still alive as of 1815, though this conjectural child has not yet been located. His brother Richard, and his friend James Ferris, the latter of whom worked from Poole, having been apprenticed to Thomas Wright of London, served as the executors of his will. Richard Ward continued to work in London, at 27 Banner St., St. Luke's until at least 1853. A possible description of his house from 1815 suggests that he had three paying lodgers in his house at that time. This same source also references Mary Ann Ward, who was the daughter of Richard Ward; it seems likely that this is the same Richard Ward, though this cannot be confirmed.Passing reference has also been made to a Henry J. Ward, who was apprenticed to a Thomas Mayne as a watch finisher in 1792 at St. Luke's, London. Assuming Henry J. Ward was 14 at the time of his apprenticeship, he would have been born two years after Henry Ward. Whether this is actually Ward's younger brother, or simply an amusing coincidence, remains unknown. An early 19th century turret clock is known by Ward; it has a pinwheel escapement, with pendulum mounted pallets and a vertical fly. He seems to have been partial to a pinwheel escapement as several of his more complicated clocks used one. Longcase clocks of 30 hour and eight-day duration, as well as silver pocket watches, including one with a duplex escapement, are all known by him as well.Kelly (1843) Post Office London Street Directory, London: Kelly's Directories Ltd.University of Leicester (2022) Historical Directories of England & Wales: London 1808-1915. A monumental American silver covered jugAndrew Ellicott Warner, Baltimore circa 1845, stamped A.E. WARNER in serrated rectangle, 11 with superscript 2 over horizontal line in rectangle Substantial cylindrical form, the tapering neck featuring a flared lip with rolled edge topped by an s-shaped hinged cover, surmounted by a cast and applied naturalistic strawberry finial with accompanying leaves, to the side a high mounted angular fluted handle emerging from two pairs of applied foliage and berry mounts, the whole decorated with high and low relief repoussé work and intricate chasing, featuring a variety of motifs including oriental temples, junk boats on choppy water, village scenes with traditionally dressed villagers, prunus, coconut trees, diaper work and elaborate scrolls both top and bottom, mixed foliage and flowers, juxtaposed against a textured matted ground, a vacant cartouche to the front, all on a plain circular base, height 32.5cm, diameter 13cm, weight 57.5oz.Footnotes:ProvenanceOwned by the Edmondson family of Baltimore and thence by family descent.Lot ResearchThe Metropolitan Museum in New York, Fifth Avenue, has a stylistically similar 'Milk Pot' and other comparable items by Andrew Ellicott Warner on view in the American Wing, Gallery 774. What makes this lot on offer so rare is its large size and despite thorough research, nothing resembling the capaciousness of this jug has to date been found.Andrew Ellicott Warner Sr. (1786-1870) was one of Baltimore's most celebrated silversmiths. He was a skilled craftsman and provided stiff competition for Samuel Kirk (1793-1872) during the second quarter of the nineteenth century. Warner contributed to the popularity of silver work featuring excessive repoussé ornamentation, a style that defined Baltimore silver amid that time period. In his working lifetime, Warner generated eleven different maker's marks and in addition, his son Andrew Ellicott Jr. (1813-1896) created three of his own maker's marks. Each mark's use sometimes overlapped the time span when other Warner marks were also employed, so dating items after 1830 can only ever be approximate. Baltimore tried to enforce an official assay mark system from 1814 to 1830, but instigation proved unsuccessful and implementation ceased. Hence after 1830 only the maker's name and the figures indicating silver purity were stamped on a silver item, applied by the maker rather than an official body. Regarding the Baltimore usage of the '11' standard mark, 'numerical quality marks first appear after the passage of the 1830 Assay Law ... The new law required silver that was not assayed to be marked with a numeral which indicated the amount of silver contained per troy pound of twelve ounces. Thus, the numerical quality mark '11' refers to the Old Baltimore assay standard alloy composed of 11 ounces of pure silver to 1 ounce of base metal'. Under Baltimore Statutes and Ordinances in February 1830, the standard mark '11' indicates that the item has to have a minimum fineness of 91.7% pure silver content. These marks can be seen on the Baltimore silver entered into the current auction.Andrew Ellicott Warner Sr. (1786-1870) was the second son of Cuthbert Warner and Ann Smith, and was born in Harford County, Maryland on November 27, 1786. He learned his trade from his father, a watch maker and silversmith, who had moved to Maryland at the close of the Revolution, and then on to Baltimore in circa 1798. In 1805, Andrew E. Warner formed a partnership with his eldest brother Thomas Warner, opening a silversmith shop at 5 North Gay Street. This partnership was dissolved in 1812, the same year Warner married Dorothy Litsinger of Baltimore, with whom he had several children. He also participated in the War of 1812, commissioned as a captain in the Maryland Militia, and consequently took part in the Battle of North Point in 1814. From 1812, 'Andy' Warner, as he was known, had his working premises located at his former shop at 5 North Gay Street, working continuously there at his forge and anvil until his death in 1870. His son, Andrew E. Warner Jr. carried on his father's profession, moving the shop to 135 West Baltimore Street until his retirement in 1893.If you were a prestigious family in Baltimore during the nineteenth century, it would have been a symbol of status to purchase your silver (an indicator of wealth and class) from the two pre-eminent silversmiths of the day - either Andrew E. Warner Sr. or his rival Samuel Kirk. The Edmondson family of Baltimore were one such family, and it is their collection of silver which is on offer today. The Baltimore silver items listed, from Lot 206 to 211, were commissioned by the Edmondson's in Baltimore in the nineteenth century, and have been handed down by descent to the current owner. The original purchaser was Dr Thomas Edmondson, who was born in 1808 as the son of a prosperous local merchant, graduating in medicine from the University of Maryland in 1834. He never practiced medicine, but instead focussed on art and horticulture, building a grand mansion and greenhouses on a hill now bounded by Edmondson Avenue, Harlem, Fulton and Mount. Dr Edmondson died in 1856 and his estate presented a section of the property to the City of Baltimore on November 11th 1867, as a gift for the creation of a public park or square. 'Harlem Park' was dedicated in 1876, and still exists in modern-day Baltimore as a testament to the Edmondson family.LiteratureJennifer Faulds Goldborough, Martha Gandy Fales and Patrick M. A GEORGE III MAHOGANY AND SATINWOOD EIGHT-DAY LONGCASE CLOCK WITH TIDAL INDICATION AND MOONPHASE WILLIAM TARLETON, LIVERPOOL, CIRCA 1775The four pillar rack and bell striking movement with break-arch plates and escapement offset to the right fitted with cranked crutch to provide impulse to the seconds pendulum suspended at the centre, the 14 inch brass break-arch dial with subsidiary calendar and seconds dials set beside each other to the upper part of the foliate scroll engraved silvered centre with further dial annotated HIGH/LOW and with curved sector revealing painted scenes of changing coastal views, within applied silvered Roman numeral chapter ring with Arabic five minutes to outer track and geometric border to outer edge, with pierced steel hands and applied cast rococo scroll spandrels to angles beneath arch with rolling moonphase incorporating sunburst and delineated terrestrial globe engraved lunettes beneath disc annotated for the age of the moon and times of high water to outer edge, the upper margin of the arch boldly engraved with simulated scroll signed WILL'M TARLETON LIVERPOOL, the case with swan neck pediment joined by an arch at the centre and with satinwood panel infill over hinged break-arch glazed dial aperture applied with fluted half columns to stiles flanked by free-standing Doric columns to front angles and with further conforming half columns set to the sides at the rear, the trunk with unusual satinwood 'rocaille' overlay to the lip of the cavetto throat moulding over inlaid arcaded frieze and shaped-top caddy moulded door flanked by quarter columns, the plinth base with stepped ogee top mouldings and geometric panel border inlay to fascia flanked by canted angles, on shallow moulded skirt with squat ogee bracket feet.237.5cm (93.5ins) high excluding finial, 58cm (22.75ins) wide, 26cm (10.25ins) deep. William Tarleton is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as a 'watch-maker of repute' working in Liverpool 1763-1807. In 1798 Tarleton's business was taken-on by his son-in-law Robert Roskell, who went on to establish one of the most important watchmaking workshops of the 19th century. The dial of the current lot is unusual in that it incorporates a subsidiary which indicates high or low tide (both with a hand as well as a sector revealing ever changing coastal views) in addition to having tidal indications to the rolling moonphase. In order to provide space for the tidal dial (as well as a calendar dial to the centre) the maker moved the seconds dial to the right of its normal central position. Tarleton achieved this by offsetting the escapement and fitting a Hindley type cranked link to the crutch to allow the pendulum to be suspended from the centre of the back plate. In addition to the slightly unusual layout the dial is particularly well finished with fine geometric engraved border to the chapter ring and nicely detailed scroll terminals to the signature banner. The attention given to the tidal indications and the high quality finish to the dial would suggest that the present clock would have most likely been supplied to a wealthy merchant or ship owner to whom knowledge of the tides would have been important.Condition Report: Movement is in relatively clean working condition and appears all-original with no visible evidence of alteration or noticeable replacements. The pallet arbor however has an extended collet/brass sleeve suggesting that it has been broken at some point in the past and the sleeve now acts as a repair. The dial is in good original condition with all functions connected and operational. The moon disc has some slight wear and historic retouching otherwise is in very good original condition; the tidal disc is also in good original condition. The silvering has some patchy tarnishing/discolouration but otherwise is in very good condition with minimal wear to the well-executed engraving. The movement and dial rest on what appears to be the original seatboard. The uprights (cheeks) of the case would appear to be original and correct at the front (corner blocks). The rest of the cheeks are at a lower level except the rear where blocks have been applied to the inside of the backboard; thin slips have been applied to bridge the front corner blocks and those applied to the backboard onto which the movement rests. This rather unusual arrangement will cast doubt as to whether the movement and dial are original to the case hence we cannot make any assurances that the clock is not a marriage (although we would be inclined to perhaps give it the benefit of the doubt). The case is generally in sound original condition. The hood has a small loss to the chin moulding towards the rear left hand corner otherwise faults are limited to age related shrinkage and a few bumps/scuffs etc. The trunk door retains original hinges; the lock is probably an old replacement. The door panel has a very slight warp causing the bottom left corner to be forward around 10mm when the door is closed; this gap could no doubt be reduced through adjustment of the hinges. The satinwood banding to the top edge of the throat has some small losses/chips. The backboard has a thin panel applied to the inside behind the movement most likely to brace/stabilise the panel which is formed from two butt-jointed boards with the joint now having become unstuck. The colour is generally a little faded causing some patchy discolouration where surface has seen some additional colouring (most noticeable to right hand side of the trunk). The base has some noticeable horizontal movement/shrinkage cracking to the fascia otherwise is in sound original condition with faults limited to age related bumps. Scuffs etc.Clock is complete with pendulum, two brass-cased weights, winder and case key. Condition Report Disclaimer
